    Get PDF
Fifth Epsilon launch vehicle (Epsilon-5) with Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration-2 was successfully launched from JAXA Uchinoura Space Center in Kagoshima, Japan on November 9, 2021. Successful injection of nine satellites with high accuracy demonstrated the capability of Epsilon launch vehicle for rideshare missions of various satellite sizes. The new Epsilon Satellite Mount Structure-II (ESMS-II) and an adapter was developed to launch more satellites. In the paper, we first introduce Epsilon launch vehicle and its multi-launch capability. Then, we describe the mission design of Epsilon-5 and rideshare specific configuration. Finally, we mention the rideshare opportunity provided by Epsilon launch vehicle in the future

Anaerobic Biodegradation Tests of Poly(lactic acid) under Mesophilic and Thermophilic Conditions Using a New Evaluation System for Methane Fermentation in Anaerobic Sludge

Anaerobic biodegradation tests of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) powder were done at the thermophilic (55 °C) and mesophilic temperature (35 °C) under aquatic conditions [total solid concentrations of the used sludge were 2.07% (at 55 °C) and 2.24% (at 35 °C)] using a newly developed evaluation system. With this system, the evolved biogas is collected in a gas sampling bag at atmospheric pressure. This method is more convenient than using a pressure transducer or inverted graduated cylinder submerged in water. PLA was degraded about 60% in 30 days, about 80% in 40 days and about 90% in 60 days at 55 °C. On the other hand, the PLA degradation started in 55 days at 35 °C and degradation rate was much slower than at 55 °C

Constraints on the early-stage rupture process of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake from 1-Hz GPS data

From the comparison of observed 1-Hz GPS data with simple forward computation that evaluates near and intermediate field terms, we put constraints on the early-stage rupture process of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake. Mainly based on the time difference of the onset of large eastward displacements at stations along the northern coast of the source region, we estimate that the first significant moment release started around 35 km west of the hypocenter determined by JMA. The moment release occurred approximately from 20 s to 35 s after the initiation of the earthquake. Significant moment release around the hypocenter and in the near-trench region started from 25 s, and 35 s, at the earliest, respectively. Before about 20 s, the moment release of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake must have been so small that any substantial displacements were not observed on land. The clear opposite motion that follows the large eastward displacement observed at many stations is due to the intermediate S-wave term

Treatment of T Lymphocytes with 8-Methoxypsoralen Plus Ultraviolet A Induces Transient but Biologically Active Th1-Skewing Cytokine Production

8-Methoxypsoralen plus ultraviolet A light is suggested to shift T lymphocytes from Th2 to Th1 cells. To clarify this issue, we examined the effects of 8-methoxypsoralen/ultraviolet A on the expression/production of cytokines in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from normal subjects and a Sézary syndrome patient. 8-Methoxypsoralen/ultraviolet A augmented the expression of mRNAs for interferon-γ and interleukin-2 and reduced those for interleukin-4 and interleukin-10. It seems that this enhancement of Th1 cytokines is caused by increment of cytokine production by Th1 cells but not by conversion of Th2 cells to produce Th1 cytokines. The number of interferon-γ-secreting lymphocytes was markedly increased in 8-methoxypsoralen/ultraviolet A-treated peripheral blood mononuclear cells 20 h after treatment, whereas that of Th2 cytokine-producing cells was decreased. Accordingly, the amount of interferon-γ was elevated in culture supernatants from 8-methoxypsoralen-phototreated peripheral blood mononuclear cells, whereas interleukin-4 was significantly reduced. This enhanced production of interferon-γ, however, was found only until 3 d after 8-methoxypsoralen phototreatment and was declined by 5 d after treatment. Finally, 8-methoxypsoralen/ultraviolet A treatment of T cells regulated their ability to induce keratinocyte CD54 expression. Our results show that 8-methoxypsoralen/ultraviolet A has a transient but biologically active Th1-skewing action in human T cells, suggesting that 8-methoxypsoralen/ultraviolet A exerts a beneficial therapeutic effect on Th2-mediated or Th2-malignant diseases

Impact of magnetic fields on ram pressure stripping in disk galaxies

(abridged) Ram pressure can remove significant amounts of gas from galaxies in clusters, and thus has a large impact on the evolution of cluster galaxies. Recent observations have shown that key properties of ram pressure stripped tails of galaxies are in conflict with predictions by simulations. To increase the realism of existing simulations, we simulated for the first time a disk galaxy exposed to a uniformly magnetized wind including radiative cooling and self-gravity of the gas. We find that B-fields have a strong effect on the morphology of the gas in the tail of the galaxy. While in the pure hydro case the tail is very clumpy, the MHD case shows very filamentary structures in the tail. The filaments can be strongly supported by magnetic pressure and, when this is the case, the B-field vectors tend to be aligned with the filaments. The ram pressure stripping may lead to the formation of magnetized density tails that appear as bifurcated in the plane of the sky and resemble the double tails observed in ESO 137-001 and ESO 137-002. Such tails can be formed under a variety of situations, both for the disks oriented face-on with respect to the ICM wind and for the tilted ones. While this bifurcation is due to the generic tendency for the B-fields to produce very filamentary tail morphology, the tail properties are further shaped by the combination of the B-field orientation and the sliding of the field past the disk surface exposed to the wind. Magnetic draping does not strongly change the rate of gas stripping. For a face-on galaxy, the field tends to reduce the amount of stripping compared to the pure hydro case, and is associated with the formation of a magnetic draping layer on the side of the galaxy exposed to the ICM wind. For significantly tilted disks, the stripping rate may be enhanced by the ``scraping'' of the disk surface by the B-fields sliding past the ISM/ICM interface.Comment: ApJ in press. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:0909.3097 by other author

Inhibitory Effects of Glycyrrhetinic Acid on DNA Polymerase and Inflammatory Activities

We investigated the inhibitory effect of three glycyrrhizin derivatives, such as Glycyrrhizin (compound 1), dipotassium glycyrrhizate (compound 2) and glycyrrhetinic acid (compound 3), on the activity of mammalian pols. Among these derivatives, compound 3 was the strongest inhibitor of mammalian pols α, β, κ, and λ, which belong to the B, A, Y, and X families of pols, respectively, whereas compounds 1 and 2 showed moderate inhibition. Among the these derivatives tested, compound 3 displayed strongest suppression of the production of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in a cell-culture system using mouse macrophages RAW264.7 and peritoneal macrophages derived from mice. Moreover, compound 3 was found to inhibit the action of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) in engineered human embryonic kidney (HEK) 293 cells. In addition, compound 3 caused greater reduction of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate-(TPA-) induced acute inflammation in mouse ear than compounds 1 and 2. In conclusion, this study has identified compound 3, which is the aglycone of compounds 1 and 2, as a promising anti-inflammatory candidate based on mammalian pol inhibition
