Functions of an unreported "rocking-embrace" gesture between female Japanese Macaques (Macaca fuscata) in Kinkazan Island, Japan.

Recently, research has focused on the effects of the concurrence of multimodal signals and their efficacy and meaning. We observed an unreported behaviour, a ventro-ventral "rocking-embrace" gesture that is always accompanied by lip smacking as the facial expression and sometimes by a girney call, in wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) living in Kinkazan Island, northern Japan. This study examined the form and contexts of the occurrence of such multimodal signals in order to elucidate its functions. Eighty-eight cases of rocking embrace were recorded during 183 h of observation over 22 days. Adult females were involved in all of the cases. Of the 71 cases between adult females in which behaviours prior to the rocking embrace could be identified, 13 cases were allogrooming interruptions, 11 were aggression, and 42 were approaches, most of which occurred between non-kin grooming partners. The rocking embrace was often followed by allogrooming. This suggests that rocking embraces occur under stressful conditions and may function to reduce tensions. This conclusion is consistent with the contexts and functions of lip smacking and girneys shown in previous studies. In contrast with lip smacking and girneys, neither a rocking embrace nor a ventro-ventral embrace (without rocking) between anoestrous adult females has been previously shown in Japanese macaques. In other macaque species, however, the latter gesture is often observed as an affiliative behaviour that immediately follows conflict; it functions to reconcile or as a greeting when it occurs immediately after an approach. Rocking embraces among the Kinkazan macaques occur in contexts similar to, and have a similar function to, the ancestral gesture of ventro-ventral embracing (which is hidden in Japanese macaques) and the ancestral display of lip smacking (which is still observed in Japanese macaques). The ventro-ventral embrace as a tactile signal might have been hidden since it was made redundant by the visual signal of lip smacking in ancestral macaques

TRAJECTORY STUDY OF BALLROOM DANCE USING MILLISECOND VIDEO ANALYSIS

    Get PDF
A short video (3 s) of the natural turn movements of ballroom dance was analyzed using two-dimensional trajectory analysis to demonstrate precise verification of the movement. The movements were recorded with a high-speed camera (240 Hz), and the trajectory was plotted at 4 ms intervals. The precise trajectories of test subjects’ movements were successfully monitored by making them wear LED lights on their necks, elbows, waists, and knees. The differences between the trajectories of an experienced subject’s movement and that of a beginner were clearly indicated, even when those movements occurred over short durations. The differences were also evident from a velocity analysis of the same video data. Our low-cost method can be applied to ballroom dance education, even in a personal dance studio

Effects of tooth bleaching on shear bond strength of brackets rebonded with a self-etching adhesive system

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effects of tooth bleaching on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets rebonded with a self-etching adhesive system. A total of 39 premolars were collected and divided into three equal groups: in group 1 bracket bonding was performed without bleaching treatment; Specimens in group 2 were bonded immediately after bleaching; and group 3 teeth were bleached, then immersed in artificial saliva and left for 7 days before bonding. The shear bond strength was measured, with the bonding/debonding procedures repeated once after the first debonding, and the bracket/adhesive failure modes were evaluated by the adhesive remnant index after each debonding. Excepting the mean shear bond strength for group 2 after the first debonding, the overall mean values reached the minimum clinical requirement of 6MPa. The mean values at the first and second debondings were significantly higher in groups 1 and 3 than in group 2. Between groups 1 and 3, significant differences were noted at the first debonding, but not at the second debonding. Group 2 showed significant differences in mean shear bond strength between the first and second debondings. Bond failure at the enamel-adhesive interface occurred more frequently in group 2 than in groups 1 and 3 after the first debonding. The bracket-rebonding procedure can recover the reduced shear bond strength caused by immediate bonding after bleaching to a clinically acceptable level, but not to the prebleaching level

Reprint and introduction of Kikuko Ojima’s Mosquito Swarm: A serial novel from Taiwanese Patriotic Women

    Get PDF
This paper reprints the text from the novel Mosquito Swarm (1913) by Kikuko Ojima (1879-1956), and introduces its content and features. The publication in which Mosquito Swarm appeared, Taiwanese Patriotic Women, was published during the Japanese imperial rule in Taiwan, and is rarely found today. A complete set of issues has yet to be discovered. Thus, the contributions made by Kikuko Ojima have never been properly ascertained. This paper reveals that Ojima contributed at least 16 volumes of works to this magazine. The heroines of Ojima’s novels often rebel against traditional familial systems. However, Mosquito Swarm establishes a heroine with completely opposite values, and is considered a literary work that illustrates the breadth in Ojima’s writing.本稿は、JSPS科研費JP17K02452の助成を受けた研究成果の一部である
