Development of Flat Tube Heat Exchanger for Heat Pump Air Conditoner

    Get PDF
We developed a new type of a heat pump outdoor unit using an aluminum flat tube heat exchanger in order to improve the energy saving capability of an air conditioner. There are several difficulties in keeping a desired drainage performance, frost formation performance, as well as even distribution of refrigerant, when applying the flat tube heat exchanger to heat pump outdoor units. In order to achieve the same drainage performance and the frost formation performance as those of conventional heat exchangers, we have adopted new plate fins with ellipse cutouts. Flat tubes were inserted in the ellipse cutouts, and the slit position on a plate fin was properly adjusted. In order to achieve the even distribution of refrigerant, an aluminum distributor and 3-way pipes were installed to the evaporator. In this report, first we describe features of the flat tube heat exchanger. Next, we present and explain experimental results of the air-side heat transfer coefficient and the air-side pressure drop on the condition of dry, wet, and frost state respectively. Moreover, we present experimental results of the total heat transfer performance, including the refrigerant performance, under the conditions of the condensation and the evaporation. Finally, we explain the heat transfer performance and the effect of the flat tube heat exchanger to a conventional one in the case that the developed heat exchanger was mounted in heat pump outdoor unit

Photocatalysis-induced selective decoration of semiconducting single walled carbon nanotubes: hole-doping effect

We have examined the time-dependent effect of the titanium oxide photocatalysis on N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone individually dispersed single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) suspensions. From optical spectroscopic studies, we found a selective decoration of the semiconducting tubes. Such selectivity is attributed to the preferential attack of the photogenerated active species on the hole-doped semiconducting SWNTs.ArticleCHEMICAL COMMUNICATIONS. 46(37):6977-6979 (2010)journal articl

Properdin has an ascendancy over factor H regulation in complement-mediated renal tubular damage

BACKGROUND: Urinary (U)-complement components have been detected in patients with proteinuric renal diseases, and complement activation via the alternative pathway (AP) is believed to play a role in renal tubular damage. The present study aimed to examine the regulation of complement AP activation in patients with renal tubular damage by focusing on the balance between properdin (P) and factor H (fH). METHODS: In the in vivo studies, U concentrations of P, fH and membrane attack complex (MAC) were measured in patients with renal diseases using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and their relationships with the clinical data were evaluated. In the in vitro studies, human proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTECs) were incubated with normal human serum (NHS), P-depleted serum (PDS), purified P and/or fH. Changes in cell morphology and phenotype were assessed by microscopy, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), immunostaining and a cell viability assay. RESULTS: The U-P, fH and MAC concentrations were significantly higher in patients with renal disease than in normal controls and correlated with the U-protein and tubular damage markers. Furthermore, multivariate analysis revealed a relationship between P levels and tubular damage markers. There were no significant changes in morphology and mRNA expression in the AP components (P, fH, fB, C3, C5 and C9) after the addition of up to 25% NHS. Dose-dependent depositions of P or fH were observed after the addition of P or fH on PTECs. Depositions of P were not inhibited by fH in a mixture of a fixed concentration of P and a variable concentration of fH, and vice versa. Preincubation with the fixed concentration of P before the addition of NHS or PDS increased the depositions of P, C3 and MAC compared with incubation with intact NHS or intact PDS only; the depositions of C3 and MAC showed a serum-dependent trend. Preincubation with P before NHS addition significantly suppressed cell viability without causing morphological changes. CONCLUSIONS: In the pathogenesis of renal tubular damage, P can directly bind to PTECs and may accelerate AP activation by surpassing fH regulation

An NLR paralog Pit2 generated from tandem duplication of Pit1 fine-tunes Pit1 localization and function

NLR family proteins act as intracellular receptors. Gene duplication amplifies the number of NLR genes, and subsequent mutations occasionally provide modifications to the second gene that benefits immunity. However, evolutionary processes after gene duplication and functional relationships between duplicated NLRs remain largely unclear. Here, we report that the rice NLR protein Pit1 is associated with its paralogue Pit2. The two are required for the resistance to rice blast fungus but have different functions: Pit1 induces cell death, while Pit2 competitively suppresses Pit1-mediated cell death. During evolution, the suppression of Pit1 by Pit2 was probably generated through positive selection on two fate-determining residues in the NB-ARC domain of Pit2, which account for functional differences between Pit1 and Pit2. Consequently, Pit2 lost its plasma membrane localization but acquired a new function to interfere with Pit1 in the cytosol. These findings illuminate the evolutionary trajectory of tandemly duplicated NLR genes after gene duplication

Safety confirmation of induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocyte patch transplantation for ischemic cardiomyopathy: first three case reports

IntroductionWith the expected increase in patients with heart failure and ischemic 15 cardiomyopathy, the development of myocardial regenerative medicine using cell transplantation as a novel treatment method is progressing. This first-in-human clinical trial aimed to confirm the safety of cardiomyocyte patch transplantation derived from allogeneic induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells based on the results of several preclinical studies.Study designThe inclusion criteria were left ventricular ejection fraction of 35% or less; heart failure symptoms of New York Heart Association class III or higher despite existing therapies such as revascularization; and a 1-year observation period that included a 3-month immunosuppressive drug administration period after transplantation of iPS cell-derived cardiomyocyte patches to evaluate adverse events, cardiac function, myocardial blood flow, heart failure symptoms, and immune response.ResultsIn the first three cases of this trial, no transplanted cell-related adverse events were observed during the 1-year observation period, and improvement in heart failure symptoms was observed. In addition, improvements in left ventricular contractility and myocardial blood flow were observed in two of the three patients. Regarding immune response, an increase in transplant cell-specific antibody titer was observed in all three patients after immunosuppressive drug administration. In one patient with poor improvement in cardiac function and myocardial blood flow, an increase in antibody titer against HLA-DQ was observed even before cell transplantation.ConclusionsOur case findings demonstrate that the transplantation of iPS cell-derived cardiomyocyte patches for ischemic cardiomyopathy can be safely performed; however, further investigation of the therapeutic effect and its relationship with an immune response is needed by accumulating the number of patients through continued clinical trials
