Japanese context of the ‘good manners’ of the legates of the Tensho embassy in Italy (1585) : the Buke Kojitsu, the Ise, and Kyūshū
Published online: 29 August 2023The Tensho Embassy has been predominantly portrayed from the ecclesiastical, European, or missionary perspectives, largely because of the availability of relevant sources. This article attempts to acknowledge the implicit agency of the legates by looking at their behavioural context through the buke kojitsu of the warrior class in sixteenth‑century Japan. It partially uncovers a Japanese cultural layer that their hosts in Italy and even Jesuit missionaries in Japan may not have perceived. It thus offers a non‑European, novel approach to the historiography, while introducing Japanese textual sources on the buke kojitsu to Western readership

The Effect of the Gravitation of the Moon on Frequency of Births
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the gravitation of the Moon on the frequency of births in Kyoto, Japan. A retrospective cohort analysis of 1007 consecutive births without the use of the induction agents was conducted on a population of births in a private midwife hospital from January, 1966 to December, 2000. There was a significant increase in the cases of births, when the gravitation of the Moon to the Earth was less than 31.5 N. Results of this study suggest that the gravitation of the Moon has an influence on the frequency of births
Similarity-based Classification: Connecting Similarity Learning to Binary Classification
In real-world classification problems, pairwise supervision (i.e., a pair of
patterns with a binary label indicating whether they belong to the same class
or not) can often be obtained at a lower cost than ordinary class labels.
Similarity learning is a general framework to utilize such pairwise supervision
to elicit useful representations by inferring the relationship between two data
points, which encompasses various important preprocessing tasks such as metric
learning, kernel learning, graph embedding, and contrastive representation
learning. Although elicited representations are expected to perform well in
downstream tasks such as classification, little theoretical insight has been
given in the literature so far. In this paper, we reveal that a specific
formulation of similarity learning is strongly related to the objective of
binary classification, which spurs us to learn a binary classifier without
ordinary class labels---by fitting the product of real-valued prediction
functions of pairwise patterns to their similarity. Our formulation of
similarity learning does not only generalize many existing ones, but also
admits an excess risk bound showing an explicit connection to classification.
Finally, we empirically demonstrate the practical usefulness of the proposed
method on benchmark datasets.Comment: 22 page
An Empirical Study of Electric Power Demand Control by Real-time Feedback of Consumption Levels: Case of Nushima Island Households
AbstractElectric power demand management will play an important role in the creation of smart-energy communities. We are conducting a field experiment on the real-time feedback of electric power consumption via smart meters and tablet PCs with the participation of 51 households on Nushima Island, one of Japan's remote islands. Our estimate of the effect of feedback in reducing power demand by panel data analysis has revealed that such feedback achieves a saving of 7.6 percent in electric power demand
Heme oxygenase-1 induction in the brain during lipopolysaccharide-induced acute inflammation
Delirium occurs in 23% of sepsis patients, in which pro-inflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide are suggested to be involved. However, in animal experiments, even a subseptic dose of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection induces both pro-inflammatory cytokines and inducible nitric oxide synthase in the brain, suggesting that the brain oxidative reaction can be induced in the subseptic condition. Then, we evaluated the changes of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), a sensitive oxidative marker, as well as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and inductible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA in the hypothalamus and hippocampus of rats using real-time PCR after peripheral injection of LPS (2.0 mg/kg). As a result, these four kinds of mRNAs were induced significantly in both areas after LPS injection. These results suggest that peripheral inflammation induces an oxidative reaction in the brain, even if the inflammation is not lethal. It is also considered that several pathways are involved in brain HO-1 induction
Sidedness of CRC on tumor immunity
Background
Clinical and molecular characteristics differ between right-sided and left-sided colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aimed to clarify the correlation between CRC sidedness and tumor immunity.
Methods
A total of 102 patients who underwent curative colectomy for stage II/III CRC were included in this study. The expression of programmed cell death (PD)-1, PD1-ligand 1 (PD-L1), forkhead box P3 (Foxp3), transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, and indoleamine-pyrrole 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) were examined using immunohistochemistry and the relationships between sidedness and several prognostic factors were examined.
Results
Clinicopathological factors were not significantly different between right- and left-sided CRC. The tumor immunity-related molecule PD-L1 was more highly expressed in right-sided than in left-sided CRC (62.9% vs. 30.6%, p<0.01). No significant difference was found in overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) by sidedness. PD-1 and Foxp3 expression were significant prognostic factors for OS. Lymph node metastasis (N), lymphatic invasion (ly), and PD-L1 expression were significant prognostic factors for DFS. In right-sided CRC, IDO-positive patients had a poor OS (p<0.05), and IDO was the only independent prognostic indicator for OS. N and venous invasion were identified as independent prognostic indicators for DFS. In left-sided CRC, univariate analysis identified PD-1, PD-L1, and Foxp3 expression as significant predictors of poor OS. Multivariate analysis confirmed PD-L1 expression as an independent prognostic indicator. N, ly, and PD-L1 expression levels were identified as significant predictors of poor DFS.
Conclusions
The prognostic factors were IDO in right-sided CRC and PD-L1 and Foxp3 in left-sided CRC. These findings indicated that tumor immunity might play different roles depending upon sidedness. Tumor location may be an important factor to consider when assessing immune response and therapeutic decisions in CRC patients
Pre-operative weight loss program
Background : The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of obesity and the usefulness of a pre-operative weight loss program (PWLP) for obese patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) for gastric cancer (GC). Materials and Methods : Study1 : 219 patients who underwent laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LDG) for GC were divided into 2 groups : body mass index (BMI) ≧ 28 and BMI < 28kg / m2. The influence of BMI in LG surgery was investigated. Study2 : The BMI ≧ 28 kg / m2 patients with a planned LG (n = 8) undertook a PWLP including calorie restriction and exercise. The effects of this program were evaluated. Results : Study1 : The BMI ≧ 28kg / m2 group showed significantly longer operation times, more blood loss and a higher frequency of post-operative complications than that of the BMI < 28kg / m2 group. Study 2 : The patients achieved a weight loss of 4.2%. The visceral fat area (VFA) was significantly decreased by 10.6%, whereas skeletal muscle mass was unaffected. The PWLP group showed shorter operation times, less blood loss and a lower frequency of post-operative complications compared with that of the BMI ≧ 28kg / m2 group.
