    Tidal Effects on Circulation in and near the East China Sea

    We incorporate tidal currents into a previously validated, three-dimensional, subtidal circulation model to assess tidal effects on the circulation in and around the East China Sea. Of particular interest is the tide-enhanced Changjiang plume dispersal and circulation in the southern East China Sea. The modeling results show that without tides, the Changjiang plume in summer presents itself as a stagnant, expansive pool in regions bordering the northern East China Sea and Yellow Sea, too far north and too accumulating relative to observations. The winter plume dispersal pushed by the north-northeast monsoon follows the China coastline southeastward as a coastal current that matches more closely with observations with or without tides. Incorporating the effect of tides brings the model closer to observation, especially in summer. During summer the Taiwan Warm Current shifts to lower latitudes, enhances upwelling off southeast China and induces a southward tidal residual coastal flow off southeast China. Tides also induce the observed seaward detachment of the summer plume. In winter, the prevailing north-northeast monsoon suppresses the Taiwan Warm Current to the minimum. However, if the winter monsoon is weakened for a few weeks, the Taiwan Warm Current reappears and these three mechanisms begin to operate as in summer. CTD surveys and satellite observations south of the Changjiang River estuary contribute to a better understanding of the tidal effects on regional ocean currents

    A SEEMINGLY UNRELETED REGRESSION ANALYSIS ON THE TRADING BEHAVIOR OF MUTUAL FUND INVESTORS

    This paper provides a comprehensive investigation on the causality relationship between fund performance and trading flows. We analyze if investors behave asymmetrically in fund purchasing and selling by seemingly unrelated regression which comprises several individual relationships that are linked by the fact that their disturbances or the error terms are correlated. The empirical result shows a significantly negative relationship between fund performance and purchase flows for domestic funds. The magnitude of domestic funds redemption negatively affects current return, but not for international funds. As previousfund return positively affects current net flows,the further lagged performances have no significant impact on the trading flows, revealing that fund investors are sensitive only to short-term past performance. Most importantly, while negative fund performance leads to the increases in redemption, positive performance contrarily leads to the decreases in purchase. The evidences strongly indicate an asymmetry behavior of fund investors in the return-purchase causality relations

    The aging trajectories of brain functional hierarchy and its impact on cognition across the adult lifespan

    IntroductionThe hierarchical network architecture of the human brain, pivotal to cognition and behavior, can be explored via gradient analysis using restingstate functional MRI data. Although it has been employed to understand brain development and disorders, the impact of aging on this hierarchical architecture and its link to cognitive decline remains elusive.MethodsThis study utilized resting-state functional MRI data from 350 healthy adults (aged 20–85) to investigate the functional hierarchical network using connectome gradient analysis with a cross-age sliding window approach. Gradient-related metrics were estimated and correlated with age to evaluate trajectory of gradient changes across lifespan.ResultsThe principal gradient (unimodal-to-transmodal) demonstrated a significant non-linear relationship with age, whereas the secondary gradient (visual-to-somatomotor) showed a simple linear decreasing pattern. Among the principal gradient, significant age-related changes were observed in the somatomotor, dorsal attention, limbic and default mode networks. The changes in the gradient scores of both the somatomotor and frontal–parietal networks were associated with greater working memory and visuospatial ability. Gender differences were found in global gradient metrics and gradient scores of somatomotor and default mode networks in the principal gradient, with no interaction with age effect.DiscussionOur study delves into the aging trajectories of functional connectome gradient and its cognitive impact across the adult lifespan, providing insights for future research into the biological underpinnings of brain function and pathological models of atypical aging processes

    Correlation of Morphology and In-Vitro Degradation Behavior of Spray Pyrolyzed Bioactive Glasses

    Bioactive glass (BG) is considered to be one of the Most remarkable Materials in the field of bone tissue regeneration due to its superior bioactivity. In this study, both un-treated and polyethylene glycols (PEG)-treated BG particles were prepared using a spray pyrolysis process to study the correlation between particle Morphology and degradation behavior. The phase compositions, surface Morphologies, inner structures, and specific surface areas of all BG specimens were examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron Microscopy, transmission electron Microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption, respectively. Simulated body fluid (SBF) immersion evaluated the assessments of bioactivity and degradation behavior. The results demonstrate three particle Morphologies of solid, porous, and hollow factors.     Fabrication and Application of Iron(III)-Oxide Nanoparticle/Polydimethylsiloxane Composite Cone in Microfluidic Channels

    This paper presented the fabrication and applications of an iron(III)-oxide nanoparticle/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) cone as a component integrated in lab on a chip. The two main functions of this component were to capture magnetic microbeads in the microfluid and to mix two laminar fluids by generating disturbance. The iron(III)-oxide nanoparticle/PDMS cone was fabricated by automatic dispensing and magnetic shaping. Three consecutive cones of 300 μm in height were asymmetrically placed along a microchannel of 2 mm in width and 1.1 mm in height. Flow passing the cones was effectively redistributed for Renolds number lower than . Streptavidin-coated magnetic microbeads which were bound with biotin were successfully captured by the composite cones as inspected under fluorescence microscope. The process parameters for fabricating the composite cones were investigated. The fabricated cone in the microchannel could be applied in lab on a chip for bioassay in the future
