A Simple Near Optimal Parallel Algorithm for Recognizing Outerplanar Graphs
An outerplanar graph is a graph which can be embedded in the plane so that all vertices lie on the boundary of the exterior face. In this paper, we propose a simple near optimal parallel algorithm for recognizing whether a given graph G is outerplanar in ο(log n) time using ο(nα(l, n)/log n) processors on an arbitrary-CRCW PRAM in the sense that ο(log n)×ο(nα(l, n)/log n)=ο(nα(l, n)) is almost linear with respect to n, where n is the number of vertices in G, α(l, n) is the inverse Ackermann function, which grows extremely slowly with respect to l and n [9] and l=ο(n). Although a near optimal parallel algorithm for general graphs can also be obtained by combining the algorithm in [3] with the algorithm for finding biconnected components [4] [9], our algorithm uses methods completely different from the algorithm in [3]'s, e. g., the well known st-numbering, and is much simpler than [3]'s
Risk Factors for Nosocomial Infection in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit by the Japanese Nosocomial Infection Surveillance (JANIS)
We evaluated the infection risks in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) using data of NICU infection surveillance data. The subjects were 871 NICU babies, consisting of 465 boys and 406 girls, who were cared for between June 2002 and January 2003 in 7 medical institutions that employed NICU infection surveillance. Infections were defined according to the National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance (NNIS) System. Of the 58 babies with nosocomial infections, 15 had methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection. Multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the odds ratio for nosocomial infections was significantly related to gender, birth weight and the insertion of a central venous catheter (CVC). When the birth weight group of more than 1, 500g was regarded as the reference, the odds ratio was 2.35 in the birth weight group of 1,000-1,499g and 8.82 in the birth weight group of less than 1,000g. The odds ratio of the CVC () for nosocomial infection was 2.27. However, other devices including artificial ventilation, umbilical artery catheter, umbilical venous catheter, and urinary catheter were not significant risk factors. The incidence of MRSA infection rapidly increased from 0.3% in the birth weight group of more than 1,500g to 2.1% in the birth weight group of 1,000-1,499g, and to 11.1% in the birth weight group of less than 1,000g. When the birth weight group of more than 1,500g was regarded as the reference, multiple logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the odds ratio was 7.25 in the birth weight group of 1,000-1,499g and 42.88 in the birth weight group of less than 1,000g. These odds ratios were significantly higher than that in the reference group. However, the application of devices did not cause any significant differences in the odds ratio for MRSA infection.</p
Protective effects of calmodulin antagonists (trifluoperazine and W-7) on hypothermic ischemic rat hearts.
The cardioprotective effect of calmodulin antagonists, trifluoperazine (TFP) and N-(6-aminohexyl)-5-chloro-1-naphthalene sulfonamide (W-7) was examined on the isolated rat heart exposed to hypothermic and ischemic conditions by measuring distribution of lysosomal enzymes in myocardial cells, and leakage of creatine kinase (CK) during reperfusion and postischemic recovery in myocardial systolic function. Experimental hearts were infused with 20 degrees C Krebs-Henseleit bicarbonate buffer (KHB) or KHB containing TFP or W-7 for 2min every 30min during hypothermic ischemia. After ischemia for 120min at 20 degrees C, rat hearts were reperfused at 37 degrees C for 30min. TFP and W-7 improved functional recovery and prevented CK release. In TFP treated hearts, leakage of lysosomal enzymes was reduced significantly, whereas stabilization of lysosomes by W-7 did not occur. These results suggest that calcium-calmodulin dependent enzymes may play an important role in the development of cellular damage of the myocardium during hypothermic ischemia, although levels of leakage of lysosomal enzymes may be unreliable predictors of functional recovery after hypothermic ischemia.</P></p
Long-term effect of cinacalcet hydrochloride on abdominal aortic calcification in patients on hemodialysis with secondary hyperparathyroidism
Background: Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is one of the common complications in dialysis patients, and is associated with increased risk of vascular calcification. The effects of cinacalcet hydrochloride treatment on bone and mineral metabolism have been previously reported, but the benefit of cinacalcet on vascular calcification remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of cinacalcet on abdominal aortic calcification in dialysis patients.
Subjects and methods: Patients were on maintenance hemodialysis with insufficiently controlled SHPT (intact parathyroid hormone [PTH] >180 pg/mL) by conventional therapies. All subjects were initially administered 25 mg cinacalcet daily, with concomitant use of calcitriol analogs. Abdominal aortic calcification was annually evaluated by calculating aortic calcification area index (ACAI) using multidetector computed tomography (MDCT), from 12 months before to 36 months after the initiation of cinacalcet therapy.
Results: Twenty-three patients were analyzed in this study. The mean age was 59.0±8.7 years, 34.8% were women, and the mean dialysis duration was 163.0±76.0 months. After administration of cinacalcet, serum levels of intact PTH, phosphorus, and calcium significantly decreased, and mean Ca × P values significantly decreased from 67.4±7.9 mg2/dL2 to 52±7.7 mg2/dL2. Although the ACAI value did not decrease during the observation period, the increase in ACAI between 24 months and 36 months after cinacalcet administration was significantly suppressed.
Conclusion: Long-term administration of cinacalcet was associated with reduced progression of abdominal aortic calcification, and achieving appropriate calcium and phosphorus levels may reduce the rates of cardiovascular events and mortality in patients on hemodialysis
