This joint study of Novotny and Watanabe deals with the personal and ethnic identity of four foreigners depicted on a wall relief of the North Palace in Nineveh as submitting to Ashurbanipal after the fall of Babylon. The study analyzed the pictographic details with circumstantial evidence from the king’s inscriptions

Elastic Instabilities within Antiferromagnetically Ordered Phase in the Orbitally-Frustrated Spinel GeCo2_2O4_4

Ultrasound velocity measurements of the orbitally-frustrated GeCo2_2O4_4 reveal unusual elastic instabilities due to the phonon-spin coupling within the antiferromagnetic phase. Shear moduli exhibit anomalies arising from the coupling to short-range ferromagnetic excitations. Diplike anomalies in the magnetic-field dependence of elastic moduli reveal magnetic-field-induced orbital order-order transitions. These results strongly suggest the presence of geometrical orbital frustration which causes novel orbital phenomena within the antiferromagnetic phase.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Spin-orbit coupling inactivity of Co2+^{2+} ion in geometrically frustrated magnet GeCo2_2O4_4

We report single-crystal neutron diffraction studies on a spinel antiferromagnet GeCo2_2O4_4, which exhibits magnetic order with a trigonal propagation vector and tetragonal lattice expansion (c/a1.001c/a\simeq1.001) below TN=21T_{\rm N}=21 K. For this inconsistency between spin and lattice in symmetry, magnetic Bragg reflections with a tetragonal propagation vector were discovered below TNT_{\rm N}. We discuss spin and orbital states of Co2+^{2+} ion underlying the new magnetic component.Comment: 3 pages 2 figures, submitted to ICFCM proceeding (Journal of Physics: Conference Series, 2011

Exfiltration and infiltration effect on sewage flow and quality: a case study of Hue, Vietnam

Sewage generated in Southeast Asia is typically characterized by small per-capita flow and low concentration. This study investigated the impacts of exfiltration (leaking-out) and infiltration (leaking-in) on sewage flow and quality in Hue, Vietnam. Sewage flow and quality were continuously monitored at the sewer outlet of a residential drainage area for 68 and 82 days during dry and rainy seasons, respectively. Infiltration was estimated based on the least sewage flow before morning. Lithium tracer tests were conducted to estimate the exfiltration ratio. The results indicated that sewage of the target sewer was weaker than the typical weak-strength sewage even on no-rain days of the dry season. Monitoring of electrical conductivity indicated that rainfall persistently decreased the sewage concentration for a maximum duration of 228 h. The estimated infiltration accounted for 11% and 62% of the total sewage inflow to the sewer during dry and rainy seasons, respectively. The tracer test indicated that exfiltration ratios during the dry and rainy seasons were 65.6% and 24.0%, respectively. As a result of developing the water balance, only 23% of the water supplied to the area reached the sewer outlet in the dry season, while 123% flowed in the rainy season. These results demonstrate that exfiltration decreased the sewage flow in the dry season, while infiltration significantly increased the sewage flow and decreased the sewage concentration in the rainy season. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to quantify the impacts of infiltration and exfiltration on sewage in Southeast Asia

Distribution of β2-adrenergic receptor mRNA expression along the hamster nephron segments

AbstractDistribution of β2-adrenergic receptor mRNA expression along the microdissected hamster nephron segments was examined by the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique. Conventional RT-PCR using a set of primers on separate exons could not be applied for the detection of β2-adrenergic receptor mRNA because of its intronless nature. We used the ‘rapid amplification of cDNA ends’ protocol [(1985) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 85, 8998-9002] as a maneuver for RT-PCR of an intronless gene. Using this method, we successfully located hamster β2-adrenergic receptor mRNA only in glomeruli and early proximal convoluted tubule along the nephron segments tested
