Extremely high energy hadron and gamma-ray families(3). Core structure of the halo of superfamily
The study of the core structure seen in the halo of Mini-Andromeda 3(M.A.3), which was observed in the Chacaltaya emulsion chamber, is presented. On the assumption that lateral distribution of darkness of the core is exponential type, i.e., D=D0exp(-R/r0), subtraction of D from halo darkness is performed until the cores are gone. The same quantity on cores obtained by this way are summarized. The analysis is preliminary and is going to be developed
Clinicopathological and targeted exome gene features of a patient with metastatic acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland harboring an ARID2 nonsense mutation and CDKN2A/B deletion
We describe the presentation, treatment, clinical outcome, and targeted genome analysis of a metastatic salivary acinic cell carcinoma (AciCC). A 71-year-old male presented with a 3 cm right tail of a parotid lesion, first detected as a nodule by the patient seven months earlier. He had a right total parotidectomy with cranial nerve VII resection, right facial nerve resection and grafting, resection of the right conchal cartilage, and right modified radical neck dissection. The primary tumor revealed AciCC with two distinct areas: a well-differentiated component with glandular architecture and a dedifferentiated component with infiltrative growth pattern associated with prominent stromal response, necrosis, perineural invasion, and cellular pleomorphism. Tumor staging was pT4 N0 MX. Immunohistochemistry staining showed pankeratin (+), CD56 (−), and a Ki67 proliferation index of 15%. Upon microscopic inspection, 49 local lymph nodes resected during parotidectomy were negative for cancer cells. Targeted sequencing of the primary tumor revealed deletions of CDKN2A and CDKN2B, a nonsense mutation in ARID2, and single missense mutations of unknown significance in nine other genes. Despite postoperative localized radiation treatment, follow-up whole body PET/CT scan showed lung, soft tissue, bone, and liver metastases. The patient expired 9 months after resection of the primary tumor
Cytokine and eicosanoid regulation by Schistosoma mansoniduring LSE penetration
Cercarial penetration, in low to moderate numbers, does not cause a normal skin inflammatory response; therefore, the authors sought to determine whether cercariae can down-regulate keratinocyte activation and thus the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and eicosanoids. Human living skin equivalent (LSE, Organogenesis) consisting of dermal, epidermal and stratum corneum-like layers was used as the skin substrate. The surface of the LSE membrane was exposed to 100 ng IFNγ or ~850 cercariae for 18 h. Incubation media and tissue was then assayed for IL-1α, IL-6, IL-8, TNFα, 5-HETE, 12-HETE, PGF2, LTB4, and LTC4 via RIA and Western Blots. TNFα was not detected. Secreted IL-1α levels were (mean ± S.E.M. (n)): Control, 1.03 ng ± 0.15 (11); IFNγ 1.90 ng ± 0.48 (5); cercariae, 1.79 ng ± 0.22 (22). In spite of this increase, cercariae down-regulated IL-8 (cercariae 11.13 ± 1.70 ng vs. IFNγ = 16.47 ± 0.29 ng, p = 0.04) and LTB4 (cercariae = 98.86 ± 19.65 pg/0.1 ml vs. IFNγ = 193.42 ± 44.21 pg/0.1 ml p = 0.02). No changes were seen in IL-6, 12-HETE, 5-HETE, and PGE2 levels. It is concluded that cercarial penetration causes a release of IL-1α consistent with skin trauma; however, schistosomulae may regulate the production of chemotactic (neutrophils, macrophages, T-cells, etc.) and activation factors such as IL-8 and LTB4

Experimental results of mini-clusters observed in Chacaltaya emulsion chamber no.19 are summarized. The study was made on 54 single core shower upper and 91 shower clusters of E(gamma) 10 TeV from 30 families which are visible energy greater than 80 TeV and penetrate through both upper and lower detectors of the two-story chamber. The association of hadrons in mini-cluster is made clear from their penetrative nature and microscopic observation of shower continuation in lower chamber. Small P sub t (gamma) of hadrons in mini-clusters remained in puzzle
Reduced expression of Toll-like receptor 4 contributes to impaired cytokine response of monocytes in uremic patients
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a pivotal role in pathogen recognition and subsequent cytokine synthesis by immune cells. Uremic patients have a high infectious morbidity, but it remains unclear if this arises from the defective innate immune responses related to TLRs. We studied TLR4 expression in monocytes and their intracellular cytokine synthesis in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation in 35 predialysis patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) with or without predisposition to bacterial infections and 16 age-matched controls. Expression of TLR4 in unstimulated peripheral monocytes was determined by staining with anti-TLR4 antibody and analysis with flow cytometry. Monocytes were then stimulated by LPS, labeled with anti-CD14 antibody, and subjected to intracellular cytokine staining and flow cytometry. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 synthesis was examined in CD14+ monocytes. TLR4 expression was constitutively diminished in CKD patients with reduced expression being more severe in those CKD patients who were predisposed to infections. Monocytes from these infection prone CKD patients exhibited significantly reduced synthesis of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 in response to LPS challenge compared with those from control subjects. The intensity of synthesis of each cytokine significantly correlated with TLR4 expression levels in monocytes (P<0.01). The capacity of monocytes to synthesize proinflammatory cytokines was significantly reduced in infection prone CKD patients, and this may possibly be due to the reduced monocyte expression of TLR4. Abnormal TLR4 expression by monocytes may play a role in the susceptibility of such patients to bacterial infections
Photoemission from buried interfaces in SrTiO3/LaTiO3 superlattices
We have measured photoemission spectra of SrTiO3/LaTiO3 superlattices with a
topmost SrTiO3 layer of variable thickness. Finite coherent spectral weight
with a clear Fermi cut-off was observed at chemically abrupt SrTiO3/LaTiO3
interfaces, indicating that an ``electronic reconstruction'' occurs at the
interface between the Mott insulator LaTiO3 and the band insulator SrTiO3. For
SrTiO3/LaTiO3 interfaces annealed at high temperatures (~ 1000 C), which leads
to Sr/La atomic interdiffusion and hence to the formation of La1-xSrxTiO3-like
material, the intensity of the incoherent part was found to be dramatically
reduced whereas the coherent part with a sharp Fermi cut-off is enhanced due to
the spread of charge. These important experimental features are well reproduced
by layer dynamical-mean-field-theory calculation
