Efficient computer search of large-order multiple recursive pseudo-random number generators
AbstractUtilizing some results in number theory, we propose an efficient method to speed up the computer search of large-order maximum-period Multiple Recursive Generators (MRGs). We conduct the computer search and identify many efficient and portable MRGs of order up to 25,013, which have the equi-distribution property in up to 25,013 dimensions and the period lengths up to 10233,361 approximately. In addition, a theoretical test is adopted to further evaluate and compare these generators. An extensive empirical study shows that these generators behave well when tested with the stringent Crush battery of the test package TestU01
Growth performance, feed utilisation and body composition of advanced nursing Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fed diets containing Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae meal
A 32-day experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects on the performance, feed utilisation efficiency and body composition of a strategic inclusion of Black Soldier Fly larvae meal (MM) in a commercially formulated diet for advance nursing Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Four isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were commercially formulated and manufactured as a control and 3 test diets with strategic inclusions of MM inclusions (0, 30, 50 and 80 g kg-1) and poultry byproduct meal substituting gradually three conventional expensive feedstuffs: fish meal, fish oil and soybean meal. Fish (5.7±0.5 g fish-1) were nursed in a cage-in-lake system (Volta Lake, Ghana), under conditions similar to commercial farming practices. Control and experimental diets were fed to triplicate cages by hand to visual satiety, 6 times day-1. Growth performance (final weight; weight gain and SGR); feed utilisation efficiency indices (FCR and PER) and feed intake were not significantly different (P≥0.05) between treatments. Survival was significantly different (P<0.05) but more likely explained by the stress related to frequent handling on the smaller fish. Fish whole body composition (dry matter, crude protein, lipid, ash and fibre) was unaffected by the treatment (P≥0.05), except for the fatty acid compositions which mirrored that of the diets
A bibliometric study of human–computer interaction research activity in the Nordic-Baltic Eight countries
Human–computer interaction (HCI) has become an important area for designers and developers worldwide, and research activities set in national cultural contexts addressing local challenges are often needed in industry and academia. This study explored HCI research in the Nordic-Baltic countries using bibliometric methods. The results show that the activity varies greatly across the region with activities dominated by Finland, Sweden, and Denmark, even when adjusting for differences in population size and GDP. Research output variations were larger for the top-tier conferences compared to entry-tier conferences and journals. Locally hosted conferences were associated with local increases in research activity. HCI research longevity appears to be an indicator of research maturity and quantity. HCI researchers typically collaborated either with colleagues within the same institution or with researchers from countries outside the Nordic-Baltic region such as US and the UK. There was less collaboration between national and Nordic-Baltic partners. Collaboration appeared especially prevalent for top-tier conference papers. Top-tier conference papers were also more frequently cited than regional-tier and entry-tier conferences, yet journal articles were cited the most. One implication of this study is that the HCI research activity gaps across the Nordic-Baltic countries should be narrowed by increasing the activity in countries with low research outputs. To achieve this, first-time authors could receive guidance through collaborations with experienced authors in the same institution or other labs around the world. More conferences could also be hosted locally. Furthermore, journals may be more effective than conferences if the goal is to accumulate citations.publishedVersio
Consensus Recommendations for Clinical Outcome Assessments and Registry Development in Ataxias: Ataxia Global Initiative (AGI) Working Group Expert Guidance
To accelerate and facilitate clinical trials, the Ataxia Global Initiative (AGI) was established as a worldwide research platform for trial readiness in ataxias. One of AGI's major goals is the harmonization and standardization of outcome assessments. Clinical outcome assessments (COAs) that describe or reflect how a patient feels or functions are indispensable for clinical trials, but similarly important for observational studies and in routine patient care. The AGI working group on COAs has defined a set of data including a graded catalog of COAs that are recommended as a standard for future assessment and sharing of clinical data and joint clinical studies. Two datasets were defined: a mandatory dataset (minimal dataset) that can ideally be obtained during a routine clinical consultation and a more demanding extended dataset that is useful for research purposes. In the future, the currently most widely used clinician-reported outcome measure (ClinRO) in ataxia, the scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia (SARA), should be developed into a generally accepted instrument that can be used in upcoming clinical trials. Furthermore, there is an urgent need (i) to obtain more data on ataxia-specific, patient-reported outcome measures (PROs), (ii) to demonstrate and optimize sensitivity to change of many COAs, and (iii) to establish methods and evidence of anchoring change in COAs in patient meaningfulness, e.g., by determining patient-derived minimally meaningful thresholds of change
Parâmetros hematológicos e bioquímicos da tilápia-do-Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus L.) sob estresse por exposição ao ar
No presente trabalho avaliaram-se os parâmetros hematológicos e bioquímicos de exemplares adultos de tilápias (Oreochromis niloticus) sob a influência do fator estresse fisiológico em animais submetidos à exposição ao ar durante a engorda em sistema raceway. Foram analisados o eritrograma, teor de hemoglobina, volume globular, o volume corpuscular médio (VCM), a hemoglobina corpuscular média (HCM), a concentração de hemoglobina corpuscular média (CHCM), o leucograma, contagem diferencial de leucócitos, o plaquetograma, a glicose, a proteína total, o colesterol, o triglicerídeo e os eletrólitos (cálcio, cloretos, sódio e potássio). Os resultados revelaram que houve uma homogeneidade de distribuição para hemácias, volume globular, hemoglobina, índices hemantimétricos, proteína total, glicose, colesterol, e íons séricos, indicados pelos valores relativamente baixos do coeficiente de variação. Houve correlação positiva somente para leucócitos totais, células de defesa orgânica (neutrófilos e linfócitos), glicose, colesterol, sódio e cálcio. Quanto ao leucograma, à medida que os animais foram expostos ao ar, o número de leucócitos diminuiu gradativamente (leucopenia), ocorrendo simultaneamente neutrofilia e linfopenia. O índice glicêmico constituiu um bom indicador de estresse fisiológico, devido à hiperglicemia (82,0±20,88mg/dL) demonstrada nos tratamentos. A exposição ao ar constituiu um fator de desequilíbrio na homeostase iônica, e na síntese de colesterol endógeno. Entretanto, o tempo de recuperação não ocasionou a completa reabilitação fisiológica frente ao desafio imposto

The same neuron may play different functional roles in the neural circuits to which it belongs. For example, neurons in the Tritonia pedal ganglia may participate in variable phases of the swim motor rhythms [1]. While such neuronal functional variability is likely to play a major role the delivery of the functionality of neural systems, it is difficult to study it in most nervous systems. We work on the pyloric rhythm network of the crustacean stomatogastric ganglion (STG) [2]. Typically network models of the STG treat neurons of the same functional type as a single model neuron (e.g. PD neurons), assuming the same conductance parameters for these neurons and implying their synchronous firing [3, 4]. However, simultaneous recording of PD neurons shows differences between the timings of spikes of these neurons. This may indicate functional variability of these neurons. Here we modelled separately the two PD neurons of the STG in a multi-neuron model of the pyloric network. Our neuron models comply with known correlations between conductance parameters of ionic currents. Our results reproduce the experimental finding of increasing spike time distance between spikes originating from the two model PD neurons during their synchronised burst phase. The PD neuron with the larger calcium conductance generates its spikes before the other PD neuron. Larger potassium conductance values in the follower neuron imply longer delays between spikes, see Fig. 17.Neuromodulators change the conductance parameters of neurons and maintain the ratios of these parameters [5]. Our results show that such changes may shift the individual contribution of two PD neurons to the PD-phase of the pyloric rhythm altering their functionality within this rhythm. Our work paves the way towards an accessible experimental and computational framework for the analysis of the mechanisms and impact of functional variability of neurons within the neural circuits to which they belong
Large-order multiple recursive generators with modulus 2\u3csup\u3e31\u3c/sup\u3e - 1
The performance of a maximum-period multiple recursive generator (MRG) depends on the choices of the recurrence order k, the prime modulus p, and the multipliers used. For a maximum-period MRG, a largeorder k not only means a large period length (i.e., pk - 1) but, more importantly, also guarantees the equidistribution property in high dimensions (i.e., up to k dimensions), a desirable feature for a good random-number generator. As to generating efficiency, in addition to the multipliers, some special choices of the prime modulus p can significantly speed up the generation of pseudo-random numbers by replacing the expensive modulo operation with efficient logical operations. To construct efficient maximum-period MRGs of a large order, we consider the prime modulus p = 231 - 1 and, via extensive computer search, find two large values of k, 71499 and 201897, for which pk - 1 can be completely factorized. The successful search is achieved with the help of some results in number theory as well as some modern factorization methods. A general class of MRGs is introduced, which includes several existing classes of efficient generators. With the factorization results, we are able to identify via computer search within this class many portable and efficient maximum-period MRGs of order 71499 or 201897 with prime modulus 231 - 1 and multipliers of powers-of-two decomposition. These MRGs all pass the stringent TestU01 test suite empirically. © 2012 INFORMS
Unique Inflammatory Bowel Disease Phenotype of Pediatric Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis: A Single-Center Study
Objectives: In adults, primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a cholestatic liver disease characterized by inflammation/fibrosis of intra/extrahepatic bile ducts, associates with a milder form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly ulcerative colitis (UC). The pediatric PSC-IBD phenotype is less well characterized.
Methods: We performed a retrospective, single-center study examining patients with PSC-IBD at Texas Children's Hospital between 2000 and 2015. IBD-phenotype (Modified Montreal Classification), medications, laboratory values, endoscopic records, and IBD-based hospital admissions were collected. PSC-UC phenotype was compared to UC, non-PSC patients (n = 95) from Texas Children's Hospital. Elevated gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase levels were compared to calprotectin levels and IBD-flare activity, that is, gastrointestinal symptoms resulting in office/emergency department visits or hospital admission.
Results: Of 39 patients with PSC-IBD, 34 (87.2%) had UC (PSC-UC) and 5 (12.8%) had Crohn disease. Pancolitis was more common in PSC-UC than UC, non-PSC (96.3%, 64%, P = 0.0009). Patients with PSC-UC required less treatment with steroids (76.5%, 91.6%, P = 0.0326) or infliximab (8.8%, 37.9%, P = 0.0011), and fewer had at least 1 IBD-related hospital admission (32.4%, 63.2%, P = 0.0025) than UC, non-PSC. Progression to colectomy was significantly less (5.8%, 24.2%, P = 0.0223) in PSC-UC. Median diagnosis-to-colectomy time tended to be longer in PSC-UC (6.37, 2.5 years, P = 0.0792). In 2 smaller subsets, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase did not correlate with calprotectin in PSC-UC (n = 11, P = 0.7922) and less strongly associated with IBD-flares in PSC-UC than UC, non-PSC (n = 33, n = 67; 15.2%, 41.8%, P = 0.0120).
Conclusions: Pediatric PSC appears to associate with milder pancolitic-UC. PSC and IBD activity do not appear to correlate. Our findings may provide useful information toward etiology and management of pediatric PSC-IBD
Epidemiologic Similarities in Pediatric Community-Associated Methicillin-Resistant and Methicillin-Sensitive Staphylococcus aureus in the San Francisco Bay Area
BackgroundRisk factors differentiating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) from methicillin-sensitive S aureus (MSSA) infections in the pediatric community have been unclear.MethodsWe performed a prospective case-comparison investigation of clinical, epidemiological, and molecular factors in pediatric community-associated (CA) MRSA and MSSA cases in the San Francisco Bay Area. Chart reviews were conducted in 270 CA-MRSA and 313 CA-MSSA cases. Fifty-eight CA-MRSA (21.4%) and 95 CA-MSSA (30.4%) cases were interviewed. Molecular typing was performed on 111 isolates.ResultsMSSA represented 53.7% of CA cases and was more likely to cause invasive disease (6.2% vs 1.1%, P = .004). Few potential epidemiologic risk factors distinguished CA-MRSA from CA-MSSA. No differences were found in factors related to crowding, cleanliness, or prior antibiotic use. Compromised skin integrity due to eczema (24.3% vs 13.5%, P = .001) was associated with CA-MSSA. Many exposures to potentially infected or colonized contacts or contaminated objects were assessed; only three were associated with CA-MSSA: having a household contact who had surgery in the past year (18.9% vs 6.0%, P = .02), and regular visits to a public shower (9.1% vs 2.0%, P = .01) or gym (12.6% vs 3.3%, P = .04). Molecular typing identified clonal complex 8 as the predominant genetic lineage among CA-MRSA (96.4%) and CA-MSSA (39.3%) isolates.ConclusionsIn the context of recent heightened focus on CA-MRSA, the burden of serious disease caused by CA-MSSA among children should not be overlooked. MRSA and MSSA may be growing epidemiologically similar; thus, research, clinical, and public health efforts should focus on S aureus as a single entity
Non-linear pseudo-random number generators via coupling DX generators with the Logistic map
This brief proposes a class of nonlinear pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs) based on coupling linear generators (DX generators) with a nonlinear generator (digitized Logistic map). By breaking the linearity, the unpredictability of the proposed generators in the family of coupling PRNGs is enhanced while the nice properties of efficiency, long period, and excellent statistical properties are preserved. Furthermore, the hardware efficiencies are validated by hardware implementations using a TSMC 0.18μm CMOS process with a throughput rate greater than 8,000 Mbit/s. In addition to the extremely long period length, the proposed nonlinear PRNGs can generate random sequences that fulfill all the randomness requirements of NIST SP 800-22 test suite. © 2012 IEEE
