Urban Regeneration of Industrial Areas: Affordable Housing for Low Income Populations in Cities
The UK-China Sustainable Development Dialogue (SDD) is a partnership between the UK and Chinese Governments to promote collaboration and good practice on sustainable development. It is framed by a 2004 joint Prime Ministerial declaration and was formally established in 2005 by an agreement signed by UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott and State Councillor Tang. The SDD was founded on the recognition that, in an interdependent world, international co-operation is needed to ensure that learning is shared and efforts are made collectively towards achieving common goals. This report is the 13th and Final Paper in the SDD (Urban Strand. It draws together the core conclusions from the previous twelve papers and offers recommendations for taking the dialogue forward
Single grain (LRE)-Ba-Cu-O superconductors fabricated by top seeded melt growth in air
We have recently reported a practical processing method for the fabrication in air of large, single grain (LRE)-Ba-Cu-O [where LRE Nd, Sm, Eu and Gd] bulk superconductors that exhibit high Tc and high Jc. The process is based initially on the development of a new type of generic seed crystal that can promote effectively the epitaxial nucleation of any (RE)-Ba-Cu-O system and, secondly, by suppressing the formation of (LRE)/Ba solid solution in a controlled manner within large LRE-Ba-Cu-O grains processed in air. In this paper we investigate the degree of homogeneity of large grain Sm-Ba-Cu-O superconductors fabricated by this novel process. The technique offers a significant degree of freedom in terms of processing parameters and reproducibility in the growth of oriented single grains in air and yields bulk samples with significantly improved superconducting and field-trapping properties compared to those processed by conventional top seeded melt growth (TSMG)
Simulating Z_2 topological insulators with cold atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice
We propose an experimental scheme to simulate and detect the properties of
time-reversal invariant topological insulators, using cold atoms trapped in
one-dimensional bichromatic optical lattices. This system is described by a
one-dimensional Aubry-Andre model with an additional SU(2) gauge structure,
which captures the essential properties of a two-dimensional Z2 topological
insulator. We demonstrate that topologically protected edge states, with
opposite spin orientations, can be pumped across the lattice by sweeping a
laser phase adiabatically. This process constitutes an elegant way to transfer
topologically protected quantum states in a highly controllable environment. We
discuss how density measurements could provide clear signatures of the
topological phases emanating from our one-dimensional system.Comment: 5 pages +, 3 figures, to appear in Physical Review
Finite temperature strong-coupling expansions for the Kondo lattice model
Strong-coupling expansions, to order , are derived for the Kondo
lattice model of strongly correlated electrons, in 1-, 2- and 3- dimensions at
arbitrary temperature. Results are presented for the specific heat, and spin
and charge susceptibilities.Comment: revtex
Wheat Forward Contract Pricing: Evidence on Forecast Power and Risk Premia
While the risk premium hypothesis in futures markets has been the subject of a long and continuous controversy, the risk premium hypothesis in forward markets is also of interest among economists. The hypothesis is supported by some theoretical arguments and empirical evidence yet remains an open question. We in this study apply a two-equation regression model similar to those used in (Fama and French (1987} and de Roon et al. (1998) to analyze the risk premiums in forward markets, particularly, using the pre-harvest wheat forward markets in Illinois (1982-2004) and Kansas (1990-2004) as an example. The two-equation regression model consists of a forecasting equation, which uses a forward basis during a pre-harvest period to forecast the spot basis at the following harvest period, and a risk premium equation, which uses the forward basis to predict the risk premium to be realized at the harvest. The empirical results show that, first, the average realized risk premiums for Illinois fluctuate around a level during the entirety of a pre-harvest period, while the risk premiums for Kansas show a slight downward trend as time approaches the harvest. The average realized risk premiums are generally positive and bigger for Illinois than for Kansas, but all mean risk premiums are within one units of their corresponding standard deviations. Second, the pre-harvest forward bases have reliable forecasting power for the spot harvest bases and contain information regarding the risk premiums, which strongly recommend estimating risk premiums conditional on forward bases.Marketing,
Single domain YBCO/Ag bulk superconductors fabricated by seeded infiltration and growth
We have applied the seeded infiltration and growth (IG) technique to the processing of samples containing Ag in an attempt to fabricate Ag-doped Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) bulk superconductors with enhanced mechanical properties. The IG technique has been used successfully to grow bulk Ag-doped YBCO superconductors of up to 25 mm in diameter in the form of single grains. The distribution of Ag in the parent Y-123 matrix fabricated by the IG technique is observed to be at least as uniform as that in samples grown by conventional top seeded melt growth (TSMG). Fine Y-211 particles were observed to be embedded within the Y-123 matrix for the IG processed samples, leading to a high critical current density, Jc, of over 70 kA/cm2 at 77.3 K in self-field. The distribution of Y-211 in the IG sample microstructure, however, is inhomogeneous, which leads to a variation in the spatial distribution of Jc throughout the bulk matrix. A maximum-trapped field of around 0.43 T at 1.2 mm above the sample surface (i.e. including 0.7 mm for the sensor mould thickness) is observed at liquid nitrogen temperature, despite the relatively small grain size of the sample (20 mm diameter × 7 mm thickness)
Commensurate lattice distortion in the layered titanium oxypnictides NaTiO ( As, Sb) determined by X-ray diffraction
We report single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements on
NaTiO ( = As, Sb) which reveal a charge superstructure that
appears below the density wave transitions previously observed in bulk data.
From symmetry-constrained structure refinements we establish that the
associated distortion mode can be described by two propagation vectors, and , with (Sb) or (As), and primarily involves in-plane displacements of the Ti atoms
perpendicular to the Ti--O bonds. The results provide direct evidence for
phonon-assisted charge density wave order in NaTiO and identify
a proximate ordered phase that could compete with superconductivity in doped

Exotic Kondo crossover in a wide temperature region in the topological Kondo insulator SmB6 revealed by high-resolution ARPES
Temperature dependence of the electronic structure of SmB6 is studied by
high-resolution ARPES down to 1 K. We demonstrate that there is no essential
difference for the dispersions of the surface states below and above the
resistivity saturating anomaly (~ 3.5 K). Quantitative analyses of the surface
states indicate that the quasi-particle scattering rate increases linearly as a
function of temperature and binding energy, which differs from Fermi-Liquid
behavior. Most intriguingly, we observe that the hybridization between the d
and f states builds gradually over a wide temperature region (30 K < T < 110
K). The surface states appear when the hybridization starts to develop. Our
detailed temperature-dependence results give a complete interpretation of the
exotic resistivity result of SmB6, as well as the discrepancies among
experimental results concerning the temperature regions in which the
topological surface states emerge and the Kondo gap opens, and give new
insights into the exotic Kondo crossover and its relationship with the
topological surface states in the topological Kondo insulator SmB6.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
