A simple coumarin based sensor 1 has been synthesized from the condensation reaction of 7-hydroxycoumarin and ethylenediamine via the intermediate 7-hydroxy-8-aldehyde-coumarin. As a multiple analysis sensor, 1 can monitor Zn²⁺ with the fluorescence enhanced at 457 nm, and ratiometric detection at 290 nm, 350 nm and 420 nm in DMF/H₂O (1/4, v/v) medium. Sensor 1 can also monitor Mg²⁺ with the fluorescence enhanced at 430 nm, and ratiometric detection at 290 nm, 370 nm and 430 nm in DMF medium through the interaction of chelation enhance fluorescence (CHEF) with metal ions. Furthermore, 1 also can monitor F⁻ with the fluorescence enhanced at 460 nm, and ratiometric detection at 290 nm and 390 nm in DMF medium simultaneously via hydrogen bonding and deprotonation with F− anion. Spectral titration, isothermal titration calorimetry and mass spectrometry revealed that the sensor formed a 1:1 complex with Mg²⁺, Zn²⁺ or F⁻, with stability constants of 4.5 × 10⁶, 3.4 × 10⁶, 8.0 × 10⁴ M⁻1 respectively. The complexation of the ions by 1 was an exothermic reaction driven by entropy processes. Furthermore, the sensor exhibits good membrane-permeability and was capable of monitoring at the intracellular Zn²⁺ level in living cells

Loschmidt Echo and Berry phase of the quantum system coupled to the XY spin chain: Proximity to quantum phase transition

We study the Loschmidt echo (LE) of a coupled system consisting of a central spin and its surrounding environment described by a general XY spin-chain model. The quantum dynamics of the LE is shown to be remarkably influenced by the quantum criticality of the spin chain. In particular, the decaying behavior of the LE is found to be controlled by the anisotropy parameter of the spin chain. Furthermore, we show that due to the coupling to the spin chain, the ground-state Berry phase for the central spin becomes nonanalytical and its derivative with respect to the magnetic parameter λ\lambda in spin chain diverges along the critical line λ=1\lambda=1, which suggests an alternative measurement of the quantum criticality of the spin chain.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

Nitrogen Addition Affects Nitrous Oxide Emissions of Rainfed Lucerne Grassland

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas. Assessing the N2O emission from lucerne grasslands with nitrogen addition will aid in estimating the annual N2O emissions of such agriculture areas, particularly following summer rainfall events in light of precipitation variation associated with global change. Here, we measured soil N2O emissions, soil temperature and water content of lucerne grasslands with four levels of nitrogen addition over 25 days, which included 10 rainfall events. Results showed that nitrogen addition was observed to increase soil NO3−-N content, but not significantly improve dry matter yield, height or leaf area index. Nitrogen addition and rainfall significantly affected N2O emissions, while the response of N2O emissions to increasing nitrogen input was not linear. Relative soil gas diffusivity (Dp/Do) and water-filled pore space (WFPS) were good indicators of N2O diurnal dynamics, and Dp/Do was able to explain slightly more of the variation in N2O emissions than WFPS. Collectively, nitrogen addition did not affect lucerne dry matter yield in a short term, while it induced soil N2O emissions when rainfall events alter soil water content, and Dp/Do could be a better proxy for predicting N2O emissions in rainfed lucerne grasslands
