Vernacular pattern of house development for home-based Enterprise in Malang, Indonesia

    Get PDF
In the process of building and maintaining houses, residents as individuals and social human beings depend on their respective interests for improving their dwellings. The strength of tradition supports the element of stability from one generation to another. It indicates that there are groups of people whose traditions will generally be passed on to the next generation. Tradition is still maintained when utilizing the home as a Home-based Enterprise (HBE). HBE developments are based on a family’s economic growth rate and also consider their household needs. In homogeneous houses, it appears that there is vernacular activity in building or repairing homes. As an example, in the case of HBEs, housing activities are maintained during the process of urban growth. Houses need to be expanded according to the needs of households and business activities within a limited urban area. In this research the pattern of house development based on vernacular HBEs, encompassing both living activities and business activities, has been investigated

Automatic Generation of 3D Building Models with Efficient Solar Photovoltaic Generation

To facilitate public involvement for sustainable development, 3D models simulating real or near future cities using 3D Computer Graphics (CG) can be of great use. 3D city models are important in environmentally friendly urban planning that will use solar photovoltaic (PV) generation. However, enormous time and labour has to be consumed to create these 3D models using 3D modelling software such as 3ds Max or SketchUp. In order to automate laborious steps, this paper proposes a Geographic Information System (GIS) and CG integrated system that automatically generates 3D building models based on building polygons or building footprints on digital maps, which show most building polygons’ edges meet at right angles (orthogonal polygon). A complicated orthogonal polygon can be partitioned into a set of rectangles. The proposed integrated system partitions orthogonal building polygons into a set of rectangles and places rectangular roofs and box-shaped building bodies onto these rectangles. In this paper, for placing solar panels on a hipped roof, the structure of an ordinary hipped roof that is made up of two triangular roof boards and two trapezoidal ones is clarified. To implement efficient PV generation, this paper proposes to automatically generate 3D building models for buildings topped with double shed roofs with overlaid PV arrays. The sizes and positions, slopes of roof boards and main under roof constructions are made clear by presenting a top view and side view of a double shed roof house. For the applied example of the developed system, this papers presents a simulation of the solar photovoltaic generation change of a city block by performing land readjustment and changing the shape of buildings, ordinarily roofed houses or double shed roofed houses suitable for efficient PV generation. Our simulation reveals that double shed roofed houses have greatly improved solar photovoltaic generation

Community Renewal Strategy from the Perspective of Cultural Planning: A Case Study on Caohuajie Community in Chongqing

    Get PDF
This article proposes a community renewal strategy named ‘cultural restored, community repaired\u27. It aims to emphasize the interaction between culture and community, promotes community renewal quality through the use of culture, and promotes the culture development by community renewal. ‘cultural restored\u27 is the core idea, include material culture restored, institutional culture restored, and spiritual culture restored, they can correspond to the methods of ‘community repaired\u27, which are space network repaired, governance network repaired, and social network repaired. In this work, the author chooses Caohuajie community in Chongqing as a case, which already got renewed by using this strategy, to discuss the feasibility and effectiveness of this strategy

Prospective living arrangement of China\u27s urban elderly and development of an Agent-based Simulation (ABS) model for elderly care needs

As China is characterized by a large ageing population, and its rapid speed of ageing, urbanization, and socio-economic transformation, the senior service issue is both typical and urgent. To support the urban planning and decision-making of relevant policies for senior services, which is significantly challenging, this research employs the multi-agent simulation (MAS) approach to simulate the complicated process of Chinese senior service provision. The approach defines the elderly, day-care centers, and residential aged care facilities (RACF) as the kernel agents, determines the behavior rules of different agents, and confirms the interaction between agents, individual agents and urban environments. Altogether nine simulation modules were designed and integrated. This study focuses on the diversifying elderly population, complexity of the senior services system, and the uncertainty of the developing background. Seniors’ socio-economic attributes such as income, family structure, education and hukou status, day-care center, and RACF agents’characteristics, such as price, location, service standard, public /private status, were emphasized at a microscopic scale. Using a bottom-up approach, neighborhood differentiation was considered the main determinant of senior service needs. Through the design of different policy-scenarios, critical parameters were determined to have the most important influence on senior service needs and their provision. The regulation of these crucial indicators will be a great scientific support to the planning of provisions for senior service facilities and to the decision-making of environmental improvement policies in different urban neighborhoods. The MAS approach is recognized as a modelling paradigm for capturing the dynamics of complex systems. This research is especially useful for supporting the provision of elderly service facilities and the environmental improvement of livable urban neighborhoods through future urban planning
