Non-Contingent Reinforcement in a Counseling Like Situation
The purpose of this study was to determine if a variable, non-contingent reinforcement, could account for a significant amount of the effect of psychotherapy. A sample of ninety subjects was drawn from basic psychology classes and randomly assigned to six groups in a variation of the Soloman 4-group design. The treatment groups were connected to sham GSR equipment and told that when a light flashed the y had made an anxiety reducing statement and were becoming more mentally healthy. The subjects were given three by five cards upon which were typed positive-negative adjective pairs and told to use the cards as cues to talk about themselves. The subjects were placed on a variable interval schedule with a mean of 10 seconds. No significant difference was found for the treatment
Charged Membrane, Low Pressure Ultrafiltration to Treat Acid Mine Drainage Waters
Low-pressure ultrafiltration with negatively-charged, non-cellulosic membranes is shown to be a feasible process in terms of achieving the simultaneous separation of dissolved metals (and sulfate) and of suspended solids from acid mine drainage water. The process is evaluated in terms of the simultaneous achievement of good water flux without membrane fouling and of adequate ultrafiltrate quality at high water recovery for water reuse operation.
At a transmembrane pressure of 5.6 x 105 N/m2, water fluxes in the range of 5.8 x 10-4 cm/sec to 12.5 x 10-4 cm/sec could be obtained at 97% water recovery. The results of the ultrafiltration investigations are compared with the reported results from lime precipitation-settling and reverse osmosis treatment field studies in terms of treated water quality, reusability, concentrate (sludge) production rates, water recovery and membrane flux behavior. High definition systems in Japan
The successful implementation of a strategy to produce high-definition systems within the Japanese economy will favorably affect the fundamental competitiveness of Japan relative to the rest of the world. The development of an infrastructure necessary to support high-definition products and systems in that country involves major commitments of engineering resources, plants and equipment, educational programs and funding. The results of these efforts appear to affect virtually every aspect of the Japanese industrial complex. The results of assessments of the current progress of Japan toward the development of high-definition products and systems are presented. The assessments are based on the findings of a panel of U.S. experts made up of individuals from U.S. academia and industry, and derived from a study of the Japanese literature combined with visits to the primary relevant industrial laboratories and development agencies in Japan. Specific coverage includes an evaluation of progress in R&D for high-definition television (HDTV) displays that are evolving in Japan; high-definition standards and equipment development; Japanese intentions for the use of HDTV; economic evaluation of Japan's public policy initiatives in support of high-definition systems; management analysis of Japan's strategy of leverage with respect to high-definition products and systems
Dose-related effects of smallpox vaccine
BACKGROUND: We conducted a double-blind, randomized trial of three dilutions of vaccinia virus vaccine in previously unimmunized adults in order to assess the clinical success rates, humoral responses, and virus-specific activity of cytotoxic T cells and interferon-gamma-producing T cells.
METHODS: Sixty healthy adults were inoculated intradermally by bifurcated needle with undiluted vaccine (dose, 10(7.8) plaque-forming units [pfu] per milliliter), a 1:10 dilution (dose, 10(6.5) pfu per milliliter), or a 1:100 dilution (dose, 10(5.0) pfu per milliliter); there were 20 subjects in each group. The subjects were monitored with respect to vesicle formation (an indicator of successful vaccination), the viral titer at the time of peak lesion formation, antiviral antibodies, and cellular immune responses.
RESULTS: A vaccinia vesicle developed in 19 of the 20 subjects who received undiluted vaccine (95 percent), 14 of the 20 who received the 1:10 dilution (70 percent), and 3 of the 20 who received the 1:100 dilution (15 percent). One month after vaccination, 34 of 36 subjects with vesicles had antibody responses, as compared with only 1 of 24 subjects without clinical evidence of vaccinia virus replication. Vigorous cytotoxic T-cell and interferon-gamma responses occurred in 94 percent of subjects with vesicles, and a cytotoxic T-cell response occurred in only one subject without a vesicle.
CONCLUSIONS: The vaccinia virus vaccine (which was produced in 1982 or earlier) still has substantial potency when administered by a bifurcated needle to previously unvaccinated adults. Diluting the vaccine reduces the rate of successful vaccination. The development of vesicular skin lesions after vaccination correlates with the induction of the antibody and T-cell responses that are considered essential for clearing vaccinia virus infections
Vestibular Stimulation for ADHD: Randomized Controlled Trial of Comprehensive Motion Apparatus
Objective:
This research evaluates effects of vestibular stimulation by Comprehensive Motion Apparatus
(CMA) in ADHD.
Method:
Children ages 6 to 12 (48 boys, 5 girls) with ADHD were randomized to thrice-weekly 30-min
treatments for 12 weeks with CMA, stimulating otoliths and semicircular canals, or a single-blind control of
equal duration and intensity, each treatment followed by a 20-min typing tutorial.
Results:
In intent-to-treat analysis (n = 50), primary outcome improved significantly in both groups (p =
.0001, d = 1.09 to 1.30), but treatment difference not significant (p = .7). Control children regressed by
follow-up (difference p = .034, d = 0.65), but overall difference was not significant (p = .13, d = .47). No
measure showed significant treatment differences at treatment end, but one did at follow-up. Children with
IQ-achievement discrepancy ≥ 1 SD showed significantly more CMA advantage on three measures.
Conclusion:
This study illustrates the importance of a credible control condition of equal duration and intensity
in trials of novel treatments. CMA treatment cannot be recommended for combined-type ADHD without
learning disorder
Optical dielectric function of gold
In metal optics gold assumes a special status because of its practical importance in optoelectronic and nano-optical devices, and its role as a model system for the study of the elementary electronic excitations that underlie the interaction of electromagnetic fields with metals. However, largely inconsistent values for the frequency dependence of the dielectric function describing the optical response of gold are found in the literature. We performed precise spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements on evaporated gold, template-stripped gold, and single-crystal gold to determine the optical dielectric function across a broad spectral range from 300 nm to 25 mu m (0.05-4.14 eV) with high spectral resolution. We fit the data to the Drude free-electron model, with an electron relaxation time tau(D) = 14 +/- 3 fs and plasma energy h omega(p) = 8.45 eV. We find that the variation in dielectric functions for the different types of samples is small compared to the range of values reported in the literature. Our values, however, are comparable to the aggregate mean of the collection of previous measurements from over the past six decades. This suggests that although some variation can be attributed to surface morphology, the past measurements using different approaches seem to have been plagued more by systematic errors than previously assumed.
