Precision Measurement of the Ds∗+−Ds+D_s^{*+}- D_s^+ Mass Difference

    Get PDF
We have measured the vector-pseudoscalar mass splitting M(Ds∗+)−M(Ds+)=144.22±0.47±0.37MeVM(D_s^{*+})-M(D_s^+) = 144.22\pm 0.47\pm 0.37 MeV, significantly more precise than the previous world average. We minimize the systematic errors by also measuring the vector-pseudoscalar mass difference M(D∗0)−M(D0)M(D^{*0})-M(D^0) using the radiative decay D∗0→D0γD^{*0}\rightarrow D^0\gamma, obtaining [M(Ds∗+)−M(Ds+)]−[M(D∗0)−M(D0)]=2.09±0.47±0.37MeV[M(D_s^{*+})-M(D_s^+)]-[M(D^{*0})-M(D^0)] = 2.09\pm 0.47\pm 0.37 MeV. This is then combined with our previous high-precision measurement of M(D∗0)−M(D0)M(D^{*0})-M(D^0), which used the decay D∗0→D0Ï€0D^{*0}\rightarrow D^0\pi^0. We also measure the mass difference M(Ds+)−M(D+)=99.5±0.6±0.3M(D_s^+)-M(D^+)=99.5\pm 0.6\pm 0.3 MeV, using the Ï•Ï€+\phi\pi^+ decay modes of the Ds+D_s^+ and D+D^+ mesons.Comment: 18 pages uuencoded compressed postscript (process with uudecode then gunzip). hardcopies with figures can be obtained by sending mail to: [email protected]

Flavor-Specific Inclusive B Decays to Charm

    Get PDF
    We have measured the branching fractions for B -> D_bar X, B -> D X, and B -> D_bar X \ell^+ \nu, where ``B'' is an average over B^0 and B^+, ``D'' is a sum over D^0 and D^+, and``D_bar'' is a sum over D^0_bar and D^-. From these results and some previously measured branching fractions, we obtain Br(b -> c c_bar s) = (21.9 ±\pm 3.7)%, Br(b -> s g) K^- \pi^+) = (3.69 ±\pm 0.20)%. Implications for the ``B semileptonic decay problem'' (measured branching fraction being below theoretical expectations) are discussed. The increase in the value of Br(b -> c c_bar s) due to B−>DXB -> D X eliminates 40% of the discrepancy.Comment: 12 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

Semileptonic Branching Fraction of Charged and Neutral B Mesons

An examination of leptons in Υ(4S){\Upsilon (4S)} events tagged by reconstructed BB decays yields semileptonic branching fractions of b−=(10.1±1.8±1.4)%b_-=(10.1 \pm 1.8\pm 1.4)\% for charged and b0=(10.9±0.7±1.1)%b_0=(10.9 \pm 0.7\pm 1.1)\% for neutral BB mesons. This is the first measurement for charged BB. Assuming equality of the charged and neutral semileptonic widths, the ratio b−/b0=0.93±0.18±0.12b_-/b_0=0.93 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.12 is equivalent to the ratio of lifetimes. Observation of a New Charmed Strange Meson

    Get PDF
Using the CLEO-II detector, we have obtained evidence for a new meson decaying to D0K+D^0 K^+. Its mass is 2573.2−1.6+1.7±0.8±0.52573.2^{+1.7}_{-1.6}\pm 0.8\pm 0.5 {}~MeV/c2c^2 and its width is 16−4+5±316^{+5}_{-4}\pm 3~MeV/c2c^2. Although we do not establish its spin and parity, the new meson is consistent with predictions for an L=1L=1, S=1S=1, JP=2+J_P=2^+ charmed strange state.Comment: 9 pages uuencoded compressed postscript (process with uudecode then gunzip). hardcopies with figures can be obtained by sending mail to: [email protected]

Further Search for the Two-Photon Production of the Glueball Candidate fJ(2220)f_{J}(2220)

    Get PDF
The CLEOII detector at the Cornell e+ e- storage ring CESR has been used to search for the two-photon production of the fJ(2220)f_J(2220) decaying into pi+ pi-. No evidence for a signal is found in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.77/fb and a 95% CL upper limit on Γtwo−photon∗BRpi+pi−\Gamma_{two-photon} * BR{pi+ pi-} of 2.5 eV is set. If this result is combined with the BES Collaboration's measurement of fJ(2220)−>pi+pi−f_J(2220) -> pi+ pi- in radiative J/ψJ/\psi decay, a 95% CL lower limit on the stickiness of the fJ(2220)f_J(2220) of 73 is obtained. If the recent CLEO result for \Gamma_{two-photon} * BR{\K_S K_S} is combined with the present result, the stickiness of the fJ(2220)f_J(2220) is found to be larger than 102 at the 95% CL. These results for the stickiness (the ratio of the probabilities for two-gluon coupling and two-photon coupling) provide further support for a substantial neutral parton content in the fJ(2220)f_J(2220).Comment: 8 pages, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

We present a measurement of the absolute branching fraction for D0−>K−pi+D^0 -> K^- pi^+ using the reconstruction of the decay chain Bbar−>D∗+Xl−nubarBbar -> D^{*+} X l^- nubar , D∗+−>D0pi+D^{*+} -> D^0 pi^+ where only the lepton and the low-momentum pion from the D∗+D^{*+} are detected. With data collected by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined Br(D0−>K−pi+)=[3.81+−0.15(stat.)+−0.16(syst.)]Br(D^0 -> K^- pi^+)= [3.81 +- 0.15(stat.) +- 0.16(syst.)]%.Comment: 10 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

Production and Decay of D_1(2420)^0 and D_2^*(2460)^0

    Get PDF
We have investigated D+π−D^{+}\pi^{-} and D∗+π−D^{*+}\pi^{-} final states and observed the two established L=1L=1 charmed mesons, the D1(2420)0D_1(2420)^0 with mass 2421−2−2+1+22421^{+1+2}_{-2-2} MeV/c2^{2} and width 20−5−3+6+320^{+6+3}_{-5-3} MeV/c2^{2} and the D2∗(2460)0D_2^*(2460)^0 with mass 2465±3±32465 \pm 3 \pm 3 MeV/c2^{2} and width 28−7−6+8+628^{+8+6}_{-7-6} MeV/c2^{2}. Properties of these final states, including their decay angular distributions and spin-parity assignments, have been studied. We identify these two mesons as the jlight=3/2j_{light}=3/2 doublet predicted by HQET. We also obtain constraints on {\footnotesize ΓS/(ΓS+ΓD)\Gamma_S/(\Gamma_S + \Gamma_D)} as a function of the cosine of the relative phase of the two amplitudes in the D1(2420)0D_1(2420)^0 decay.Comment: 15 pages in REVTEX format. hardcopies with figures can be obtained by sending mail to: [email protected]

    Observation of the Isospin-Violating Decay Ds∗+→Ds+π0D_s^{*+}\to D_s^+\pi^0

Using data collected with the CLEO~II detector, we have observed the isospin-violating decay Ds∗+→Ds+π0D_s^{*+}\to D_s^+\pi^0. The decay rate for this mode, relative to the dominant radiative decay, is found to be Γ(Ds∗+→Ds+π0)/Γ(Ds∗+→Ds+γ)=0.062−0.018+0.020±0.022\Gamma(D_s^{*+}\to D_s^+\pi^0)/\Gamma(D_s^{*+}\to D_s^+\gamma)= 0.062^{+0.020}_{-0.018}\pm0.022.Comment: 8 page uuencoded postscript file, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

Tau Neutrino Helicity from h±h^{\pm} Energy Correlations

We report a measurement of the magnitude of the tau neutrino helicity from tau-pair events taken with the CLEO detector at the CESR electron-positron storage ring. Events in which each tau undergoes the decay tau -> h nu, with h a charged pion or kaon, are analyzed for energy correlations between the daughter hadrons, yielding |xi| = 2*|h_nu| = 1.03 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.04, with the first error statistical and the second systematic.Comment: 11 pages, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

Limit on the Two-Photon Production of the Glueball Candidate fJ(2220)f_{J}(2220) at CLEO

We use the CLEO detector at the Cornell electron-positron storage ring, CESR, to search for the two-photon production of the glueball candidate f_J(2220) in its decay to K_s K_s. We present a restrictive upper limit on the product of the two-photon partial width and the K_s K_s branching fraction. We use this limit to calculate a lower limit on the stickiness, which is a measure of the two-gluon coupling relative to the two-photon coupling. This limit on stickiness indicates that the f_J(2220) has substantial glueball content.Comment: 9 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN
