Trapping Ultracold Atoms in a Time-Averaged Adiabatic Potential
We report the first experimental realization of ultracold atoms confined in a
time-averaged, adiabatic potential (TAAP). This novel trapping technique
involves using a slowly oscillating ( kHz) bias field to time-average the
instantaneous potential given by dressing a bare magnetic potential with a high
frequency ( MHz) magnetic field. The resultant potentials provide a
convenient route to a variety of trapping geometries with tunable parameters.
We demonstrate the TAAP trap in a standard time-averaged orbiting potential
trap with additional Helmholtz coils for the introduction of the radio
frequency dressing field. We have evaporatively cooled 5 atoms of
Rb to quantum degeneracy and observed condensate lifetimes of over

Creation of solitons and vortices by Bragg reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice
We study the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice and
harmonic trap. The condensates are set in motion by displacing the trap and
initially follow simple semiclassical paths, shaped by the lowest energy band.
Above a critical displacement, the condensate undergoes Bragg reflection. For
high atom densities, the first Bragg reflection generates a train of solitons
and vortices, which destabilize the condensate and trigger explosive expansion.
At lower densities, soliton and vortex formation requires multiple Bragg

Linear stability of confined flow around a 180-degree sharp bend
This study seeks to characterise the breakdown of the steady two-dimensional solution
in the flow around a 180-degree sharp bend to infinitesimal three-dimensional
disturbances using a linear stability analysis. The stability analysis predicts that
three-dimensional transition is via a synchronous instability of the steady flows.
A highly accurate global linear stability analysis of the flow was conducted with
Reynolds number Re < 1150 and bend opening ratio (ratio of bend width to inlet
height) 0.26β 65. This range of Re and β captures both steady-state two-dimensional
flow solutions and the inception of unsteady two-dimensional flow. For 0.2 6 β 6 1,
the two-dimensional base flow transitions from steady to unsteady at higher Reynolds
number as β increases. The stability analysis shows that at the onset of instability,
the base flow becomes three-dimensionally unstable in two different modes, namely
a spanwise oscillating mode for β = 0.2 and a spanwise synchronous mode for
β > 0.3. The critical Reynolds number and the spanwise wavelength of perturbations
increase as β increases. For 1 < β 6 2 both the critical Reynolds number for onset
of unsteadiness and the spanwise wavelength decrease as β increases. Finally, for
2 < β 6 5, the critical Reynolds number and spanwise wavelength remain almost
constant. The linear stability analysis also shows that the base flow becomes unstable
to different three-dimensional modes depending on the opening ratio. The modes are

Not in my back yard! Sports stadia location and the property market
In recent years sports stadia have been built in the UK, not only for their intended sporting purpose but with the twin aim of stimulating economic and physical regeneration. However, proposals to locate stadia in urban areas often prompt a negative reaction from local communities, fearing a decline in property prices. This paper will use a case study of the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and the City of Manchester Stadium to illustrate that in contrast to this widely held belief, sports stadia can actually enhance the value of residential property. Furthermore, it will argue that stadia also contribute indirectly to property value through the creation of pride, confidence and enhanced image of an area.</p
Reliably Classifying Novice Programmer Exam Responses using the SOLO Taxonomy
Abstract: Past papers of the BRACElet project have described an approach to teaching and assessing students where the students are presented with short pieces of code, and are instructed to explain, in plain English, what the code does. The student responses to these types of questions can be analysed according to the SOLO taxonomy. Some students display an understanding of the code as a single, functional whole, while other students cannot âsee the forest for the treesâ . However, classifying student responses into the taxonomy is not always straightforward. This paper analyses the reliability of the SOLO taxonomy as a means of categorising student responses. The paper derives an augmented set of SOLO categories for application to the programming domain, and proposes a set of guidelines for researchers to use
Soft robotic snake with variable stiffness actuation

In this paper, we present a prototype of a 3D printed snake-like robot for search and rescue applications, inspired by biological snake anatomy and locomotion. Unlike traditional robotics, this design takes advantage of soft materials to create a robot that is resilient to shock impacts, such as from falling debris or unsound flooring, and that can very its stiffness. The robot uses a flexible spine to connect multiple sections, allowing controlled actuation while providing a sturdy structure. Variable stiffness actuation is implemented through the use of elastic materials to act as tendons for the body, in an agonist-antagonist setup. Actuation occurs through the use of Robotis Dynamixel AX-12A servos, controlled by a Trossen Robotics Arbotix-M Robocon-troller. The design features a head, containing a Raspberry Pi 3 and a Pi Camera Module. This added embedded computation can connect to a remote PC via wireless communication, allowing an operator to control the robot. This paper discusses the design and early stage testing for the prototype, and shows that robots based on soft 3D printed materials and mechanisms are viable, and effective
Fiber modulators and fiber amplifiers for LISA
We present the sideband phase characteristics of a fiber-coupled integrated electro-optical modulator (EOM) at a modulation frequency of 2 GHz for Fourier frequencies from 0.1 mHz to 1 Hz. The upper phase noise limit was almost an order of magnitude better than required for LISA. The EOM's phase dependencies on temperature and transmitted optical power were measured and found to be uncritical. Additionally we have investigated three optical amplifiers emitting 1 W. Their differential phase noise and optical pathlength noise as one contribution to differential phase noise were measured. The measured differential phase noise was within the requirement. The dependencies of differential phase noise on pump power were measured and requirements for the operation of the amplifier on the LISA satellite derived.DLR/50 OQ 0601DFG/EXC/QUES
Buprenorphine versus dihydrocodeine for opiate detoxification in primary care: a randomised controlled trial
Background
Many drug users present to primary care requesting detoxification from illicit opiates. There are a number of detoxification agents but no recommended drug of choice. The purpose of this study is to compare buprenorphine with dihydrocodeine for detoxification from illicit opiates in primary care.
Methods
Open label randomised controlled trial in NHS Primary Care (General Practices), Leeds, UK. Sixty consenting adults using illicit opiates received either daily sublingual buprenorphine or daily oral dihydrocodeine. Reducing regimens for both interventions were at the discretion of prescribing doctor within a standard regimen of not more than 15 days. Primary outcome was abstinence from illicit opiates at final prescription as indicated by a urine sample. Secondary outcomes during detoxification period and at three and six months post detoxification were recorded.
Results
Only 23% completed the prescribed course of detoxification medication and gave a urine sample on collection of their final prescription. Risk of non-completion of detoxification was reduced if allocated buprenorphine (68% vs 88%, RR 0.58 CI 0.35–0.96, p = 0.065). A higher proportion of people allocated to buprenorphine provided a clean urine sample compared with those who received dihydrocodeine (21% vs 3%, RR 2.06 CI 1.33–3.21, p = 0.028). People allocated to buprenorphine had fewer visits to professional carers during detoxification and more were abstinent at three months (10 vs 4, RR 1.55 CI 0.96–2.52) and six months post detoxification (7 vs 3, RR 1.45 CI 0.84–2.49).
Conclusion
Informative randomised trials evaluating routine care within the primary care setting are possible amongst drug using populations. This small study generates unique data on commonly used treatment regimens
Investigation of guided wave propagation in pipes fully- and partially-embedded in concrete
The application of long-range guided-wave testing to pipes embedded in concrete results in unpredictable test-ranges. The influence of the circumferential extent of the embedding-concrete around a steel pipe on the guided wave propagation is investigated. An analytical model is used to study the axisymmetric fully embedded pipe case, while explicit finite-element and semi-analytical finite-element simulations are utilised to investigate a partially embedded pipe. Model predictions and simulations are compared with full-scale guided-wave tests. The transmission-loss of the T(0,1)-mode in an 8 in. steel pipe fully embedded over an axial length of 0.4 m is found to be in the range of 32–36 dB while it reduces by a factor of 5 when only 50% of the circumference is embedded. The transmission-loss in a fully embedded pipe is mainly due to attenuation in the embedded section while in a partially embedded pipe it depend strongly on the extent of mode-conversion at entry to the embedded-section; low loss modes with energy concentrated in the region of the circumference not-covered with concrete have been identified. The results show that in a fully embedded pipe, inspection beyond a short distance will not be possible, whereas when the concrete is debonded over a fraction of the pipe circumference, inspection of substantially longer lengths may be possible
