A Preliminary Report on the Itasca Bison Site
In the summer of 1937 excavations conducted by the University of Minnesota Anthropology Department in Itasca State Park yielded extinct bison and other animal remains along with several stone artifacts. A preliminary notice was published in Science shortly after excavation was completed (Jenks, 193 7). The bones were extracted from a marl layer underlying a peat bog near the south end of the west arm of Lake Itasca. The deposit was discovered during construction of a road bridge over Nicollet Creek adjacent to the site. Material in the following report was assembled from unpublished field notes and records on file in the Anthropology Laboratory, University of Minnesota. Plans are now underway for excavation of undisturbed portions of this important site to recover further material and samples for radiocarbon dating
A Model Ground State of Polyampholytes
The ground state of randomly charged polyampholytes is conjectured to have a
structure similar to a necklace, made of weakly charged parts of the chain,
compacting into globules, connected by highly charged stretched `strings'. We
suggest a specific structure, within the necklace model, where all the neutral
parts of the chain compact into globules: The longest neutral segment compacts
into a globule; in the remaining part of the chain, the longest neutral segment
(the 2nd longest neutral segment) compacts into a globule, then the 3rd, and so
on. We investigate the size distributions of the longest neutral segments in
random charge sequences, using analytical and Monte Carlo methods. We show that
the length of the n-th longest neutral segment in a sequence of N monomers is
proportional to N/(n^2), while the mean number of neutral segments increases as
sqrt(N). The polyampholyte in the ground state within our model is found to
have an average linear size proportional to sqrt(N), and an average surface

Immunohistochemical investigation of prognostic biomarkers in resected colorectal liver metastases : A systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: Many studies have investigated the prognostic role of biomarkers in colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). However, no biomarker has been established in routine clinical practice. The aim of this study was to scrutinize the current literature for biomarkers evaluated by immunohistochemistry as prognostic markers in patients with resected CRLM. Methods: A systematic review was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines. Articles were identified in the PubMed database with selected search terms and by cross-references search. The REMARK quality criteria were applied. Markers were included if they reported the prognostic impact of immunohistochemical markers in a multivariable setting in relation to overall survival (OS). A meta-analysis was conducted when more than one original article provided survival data of a marker. Results: In total, 26 biomarkers were identified as independent significant markers for OS in resected CRLM. These biomarkers were found to be involved in multiple oncogenic signalling pathways that control cell growth, apoptosis, angiogenesis and evasion of immune detection. Among these biomarker candidates were Ki-67, EGFR, p53, hTERT, CD34, TSP-1, KISS1, Aurora kinase A and CDX2. CD34 and TSP-1 were reported as significantly associated with survival by more than one study and where therefore pooled in a meta-analysis. Conclusion: A number of independent prognostic biomarkers for resected CRLM were identified. However, most markers were evaluated in a retrospective setting with small patient cohorts, without external validation. Large, prospective, multicentre studies with standardised methods are needed before biomarkers can translated into the clinic
