When bad stress goes good: increased threat reactivity predicts improved category learning performance
The way in which we respond to everyday stressors can have a profound impact on cognitive functioning. Maladaptive stress responses in particular are generally associated with impaired cognitive performance. We argue, however, that the cognitive system mediating task performance is also a critical determinant of the stress-cognition relationship. Consistent with this prediction, we observed that stress reactivity consistent with a maladaptive, threat response differentially predicted performance on two categorization tasks. Increased threat reactivity predicted enhanced performance on an information-integration task (i.e., learning is thought to depend upon a procedural-based memory system), and a (nonsignificant) trend for impaired performance on a rule-based task (i.e., learning is thought to depend upon a hypothesis-testing system). These data suggest that it is critical to consider both variability in the stress response and variability in the cognitive system mediating task performance in order to fully understand the stress-cognition relationship

Is Pressure Stressful? The Impact of Pressure on the Stress Response and Category Learning
We examine the basic question of whether pressure is stressful. We propose that when examining the role of stress or pressure in cognitive performance it is important to consider the type of pressure, the stress response, and the aspect of cognition assessed. In Experiment 1, outcome pressure was not experienced as stressful but did lead to impaired performance on a rule-based (RB) category learning task and not a more procedural information-integration (II) task. A phase 3, open-label, randomized trial to evaluate the safety and efficacy of levofloxacin inhalation solution (APT-1026) versus tobramycin inhalation solution in stable cystic fibrosis patients
Background: Inhaled antibiotics are standard of care for persons with cystic fibrosis (CF) and chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa airway infection. APT-1026 (levofloxacin inhalation solution, LIS) is fluoroquinolone in development. We compared the safety and efficacy of LIS to tobramycin inhalation solution (TIS) in persons ≥12 years old with CF and chronic P. aeruginosa infection.
Methods: This multinational, randomized (2:1), non-inferiority study compared LIS and TIS over three 28-day on/off cycles. Day 28 FEV1 % predicted change was the primary endpoint. Time to exacerbation and patient-reported quality of life superiority were among secondary endpoints.
Results: Baseline demographics for 282 subjects were comparable. Non-inferiority was demonstrated (1.86% predicted mean FEV1 difference [95% CI −0.66 to 4.39%]). LIS was well-tolerated, with dysguesia (taste distortion) the most frequent adverse event.
Conclusions: LIS is a safe and effective therapy for the management of CF patients with chronic P. aeruginosa
Glial Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNFα) Generates Metaplastic Inhibition of Spinal Learning
Injury-induced overexpression of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) in the spinal cord can induce chronic neuroinflammation and excitotoxicity that ultimately undermines functional recovery. Here we investigate how TNFα might also act to upset spinal function by modulating spinal plasticity. Using a model of instrumental learning in the injured spinal cord, we have previously shown that peripheral intermittent stimulation can produce a plastic change in spinal plasticity (metaplasticity), resulting in the prolonged inhibition of spinal learning. We hypothesized that spinal metaplasticity may be mediated by TNFα. We found that intermittent stimulation increased protein levels in the spinal cord. Using intrathecal pharmacological manipulations, we showed TNFα to be both necessary and sufficient for the long-term inhibition of a spinal instrumental learning task. These effects were found to be dependent on glial production of TNFα and involved downstream alterations in calcium-permeable AMPA receptors. These findings suggest a crucial role for glial TNFα in undermining spinal learning, and demonstrate the therapeutic potential of inhibiting TNFα activity to rescue and restore adaptive spinal plasticity to the injured spinal cord. TNFα modulation represents a novel therapeutic target for improving rehabilitation after spinal cord injury
The James Webb Space Telescope Mission
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies,
expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling
for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least .
With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000
people realized that vision as the James Webb Space Telescope. A
generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of
the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the
scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000
team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image
quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief
history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing
program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite

Natural Disasters, Risk-Salience, and Public Health
This dissertation explores the dynamic links between natural disasters, human decision making, and risk perceptions as well as the public health implications of wildfire. In Chapter 1, we develop a model that links underlying changes in location-specific risk perceptions to housing market dynamics. We apply the model's predictions to an empirical analysis of the influence of severe wildfires on housing markets. Interpreted in the context of the model, our empirical results suggest that the evolution of risk perceptions following a natural disaster depend both on the characteristics of the property (relationship to the disaster and latent risk) and the location of the individual whose risk perceptions we are considering (potential seller vs. potential buyer). In Chapter 2, we examine the relationship between hurricanes, the salience of flood risk, and residential property investment. Utilizing a difference-in-differences estimation strategy, we find a significant increase in the probability a homeowner invests in a damaged building located in a statutorily designated flood risk area. However, we find no change in the rate of property investment in damaged homes located outside of these areas. We estimate changes in households’ perceptions of risk by modeling relative changes in investment between properties in designated risk areas and properties directly outside of these zones restricting attention to the set of structures that failed to experience any damage by the storm. Model results suggest that a recent storm may elevate households' perceptions of flood risk; however, we show that the primary mechanism driving these changes is a household's exposure to storm damage. Finally, in Chapter 3 we estimate the effects of wildfire on infant health. Model results show that wildfires lead to a statistically significant 4% to 6% reduction in birthweight conditional on the mother being exposed in her second or third trimester and located inside a wildfire smoke plume or downwind of a wildfire burn area. We find no statistically significant effects of wildfire on the health of infants located more than 3 miles away from a burn scar, living outside of smoky areas, or upwind of a wildfire
