    International relations in international business research:A review and research agenda

    The increasing dynamism of the international business (IB) environment has drawn greater scholarly attention to the implications of international politics for MNEsā€™ cross-border activities. However, a systematic overview of International Relations (IR) research which has been applied in IB studies is absent. To analyse this void, we propose a conceptual framework of the broader international context to delineate the research boundaries of the emerging IR in IB research domain and offer a critically synthesized review of the studies that have drawn on IRscholarship to explain MNEsā€™ behaviour. We conduct bibliometric and content analyses to understand the state of knowledge of IR in IB research and examine the main approaches to study the impact of IR factors on MNEsā€™ location choices, entry strategies, legitimacy and post-entry performance. By illuminating knowledge frontier issues, we derive important directions for deepening the integration of IR scholarship to advance IB research

    Propensity score regression for causal inference with treatment heterogeneity

    Understanding how treatment effects vary on individual characteristics is critical in the contexts of personalized medicine, personalized advertising and policy design. When the characteristics are of practical interest are only a subset of full covariate, non-parametric estimation is often desirable; but few methods are available due to the computational difficult. Existing non-parametric methods such as the inverse probability weighting methods have limitations that hinder their use in many practical settings where the values of propensity scores are close to 0 or 1. We propose the propensity score regression (PSR) that allows the non-parametric estimation of the heterogeneous treatment effects in a wide context. PSR includes two non-parametric regressions in turn, where it first regresses on the propensity scores together with the characteristics of interest, to obtain an intermediate estimate; and then, regress the intermediate estimates on the characteristics of interest only. By including propensity scores as regressors in the non-parametric manner, PSR is capable of substantially easing the computational difficulty while remain (locally) insensitive to any value of propensity scores. We present several appealing properties of PSR, including the consistency and asymptotical normality, and in particular the existence of an explicit variance estimator, from which the analytical behaviour of PSR and its precision can be assessed. Simulation studies indicate that PSR outperform existing methods in varying settings with extreme values of propensity scores. We apply our method to the national 2009 flu survey (NHFS) data to investigate the effects of seasonal influenza vaccination and having paid sick leave across different age groups

    Acoustic transmission enhancement through a periodically-structured stiff plate without any opening

    We report both experimentally and theoretically that the enhanced acoustic transmission can occur in the subwavelength region through a thin but stiff structured-plate without any opening. This exotic acoustic phenomenon is essentially distinct from the previous related studies originated from, either collectively or individually, the interaction of the incident wave with openings in previous structures. It is attributed to the structure-induced resonant excitation of the non-leaky Lamb modes that exist intrinsically in the uniform elastic plate. Our finding should have impact on ultrasonic applications.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    Prevalence of the GJB2 IVS1+1G >A mutation in Chinese hearing loss patients with monoallelic pathogenic mutation in the coding region of GJB2

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mutations in the GJB2 gene are the most common cause of nonsyndromic recessive hearing loss in China. In about 6% of Chinese patients with severe to profound sensorineural hearing impairment, only monoallelic <it>GJB2 </it>mutations known to be either recessive or of unclear pathogenicity have been identified. This paper reports the prevalence of the <it>GJB2 </it>IVS1+1G>A mutation in a population of Chinese hearing loss patients with monoallelic pathogenic mutation in the coding region of <it>GJB2</it>.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two hundred and twelve patients, screened from 7133 cases of nonsyndromic hearing loss in China, with monoallelic mutation (mainly frameshift and nonsense mutation) in the coding region of <it>GJB2 </it>were examined for the <it>GJB2 </it>IVS1+1G>A mutation and mutations in the promoter region of this gene. Two hundred and sixty-two nonsyndromic hearing loss patients without <it>GJB2 </it>mutation and 105 controls with normal hearing were also tested for the <it>GJB2 </it>IVS1+1G>A mutation by sequencing.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Four patients with monoallelic mutation in the coding region of <it>GJB2 </it>were found carrying the <it>GJB2 </it>IVS1+1G>A mutation on the opposite allele. One patient with the <it>GJB2 </it>c.235delC mutation carried one variant, -3175 C>T, in exon 1 of <it>GJB2</it>. Neither <it>GJB2 </it>IVS1+1G>A mutation nor any variant in exon 1 of <it>GJB2 </it>was found in the 262 nonsyndromic hearing loss patients without <it>GJB2 </it>mutation or in the 105 normal hearing controls.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Testing for the <it>GJB2 </it>IVS 1+1 G to A mutation explained deafness in 1.89% of Chinese <it>GJB2 </it>monoallelic patients, and it should be included in routine testing of patients with <it>GJB2 </it>monoallelic pathogenic mutation.</p

    Extremely discrepant mutation spectrum of SLC26A4 between Chinese patients with isolated Mondini deformity and enlarged vestibular aqueduct

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Mutations in <it>SLC26A4 </it>cause Pendred syndrome (hearing loss with goiter) or DFNB4 (non-syndromic hearing loss with inner ear malformation, such as enlarged vestibular aqueduct or Mondini deformity). The relationship between mutations in <it>SLC26A4 </it>and Mondini deformity without enlarged vestibular aqueduct has not been studied in any Chinese deaf population. The purpose of this study was to assess whether mutations in the <it>SLC26A4 </it>gene cause Mondini deformity without an enlarged vestibular aqueduct (isolated Mondini deformity) in a Chinese population.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In total, 144 patients with sensorineural hearing loss were included and subjected to high-resolution temporal bone CT. Among them, 28 patients with isolated Mondini dysplasia (MD group), 50 patients with enlarged vestibular aqueduct with Mondini dysplasia (EVA with MD group), 50 patients with enlarged vestibular aqueduct without Mondini dysplasia (EVA group), and 16 patients with other types of inner ear malformations (IEM group) were identified. The coding exons of <it>SLC26A4 </it>were analyzed in all subjects.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>DNA sequence analysis of <it>SLC26A4 </it>was performed in all 144 patients. In the different groups, the detection rate of the <it>SLC26A4 </it>mutation differed. In the isolated MD group, only one single allelic mutation in <it>SLC26A4 </it>was found in one patient (1/28, 3.6%). In the EVA with MD group, biallelic and monoallelic <it>SLC26A4 </it>mutations were identified in 46 patients (46/50, 92.0%) and three patients (3/50, 6.0%), respectively. Also, in the EVA group, biallelic and monoallelic <it>SLC26A4 </it>mutations were identified in 46 patients (46/50, 92.0%) and three patients (3/50, 6.0%), respectively. These percentages were identical to those in the EVA plus MD group. Only two patients carried monoallelic mutations of the <it>SLC26A4 </it>gene in the IEM group (2/16, 12.5%). There were significant differences in the frequency of <it>SLC26A4 </it>mutation among the groups (P < 0.001). The detection rate of <it>SLC26A4 </it>mutation in the isolated MD group was significantly lower than in the EVA group (with or without MD; P < 0.001), and there was no significant difference in the detection rate of <it>SLC26A4 </it>between the MD group and IEM group (P > 0.5).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although mutations in the <it>SLC26A4 </it>gene were frequently found in Chinese EVA patients with and without MD, there was no evidence to show a relationship between isolated MD and the <it>SLC26A4 </it>gene in the Chinese population examined. Hearing impairment in patients with isolated MD may be caused by factors other than mutations in the <it>SLC26A4 </it>gene.</p

    Prioritization of control factors for heavy metals in groundwater based on a source-oriented health risk assessment model

    Heavy metals (HMs) in groundwater seriously threaten ecological safety and human health. To facilitate the effective management of groundwater contamination, priority control factors of HMs in groundwater need to be categorized. A total of 86 groundwater samples were collected from the Huangpi district of Wuhan city, China, during the dry and wet seasons. To determine priority control factors, a source-oriented health risk assessment model was applied to compare the pollution sources and health risks of seven HMs (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, As, and Fe). The results showed that the groundwater had higher As and Fe contents. The sources of HM pollution during the wet period were mainly industrial and agricultural activities and natural sources. During the dry period, origins were more complex due to the addition of domestic discharges, such as sewage wastewater. Industrial activities (74.10% during the wet period), agricultural activities (53.84% during the dry period), and As were identified as the priority control factors for groundwater HMs. The results provide valuable insights for policymakers to coordinate targeted management of HM pollution in groundwater and reduce the cost of HM pollution mitigation

    Neuroprotective Effects of Jitai Tablet, a Traditional Chinese Medicine, on the MPTP-Induced Acute Model of Parkinsonā€™s Disease: Involvement of the Dopamine System

    Jitai tablet (JTT) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat neuropsychiatric disorders. We previously demonstrated that JTT treatment led to increased level of dopamine transporter (DAT) in the striatum, thus indicating that JTT might have therapeutic potential for Parkinsonā€™s disease (PD), which is characterized by dysregulated dopamine (DA) transmission and decreased striatal DAT expression. The aim of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective effect of JTT on MPTP-induced PD mice. Using locomotor activity test and rotarod test, we evaluated the effects of JTT (0.50, 0.15, or 0.05ā€‰g/kg) on MPTP-induced behavioral impairments. Tyrosine hydroxylase TH-positive neurons in the substantia nigra and DAT and dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) levels in the striatum were detected by immunohistochemical staining and/or autoradiography. Levels of DA and its metabolites were determined by HPLC. In MPTP-treated mice, behavioral impairments were alleviated by JTT treatment. Moreover, JTT protected against impairment of TH-positive neurons and attenuated the MPTP-induced decreases in DAT and D2R. Finally, high dose of JTT (0.50ā€‰g/kg) inhibited the MPTP-induced increase in DA metabolism rate. Taken together, results from our present study provide evidence that JTT offers neuroprotective effects against the neurotoxicity of MPTP and thus might be a potential treatment for PD

    Isolation and characterization of the mink interferon-epsilon gene and its antiviral activity

    The interferon (IFN) response is the first line of defense against viral invasion and thus plays a central role in the regulation of the immune response. IFN-epsilon (IFN-Īµ) is a newly discovered type I IFN that does not require viral induction, unlike other type I IFNs. IFN-Īµ is constitutively expressed in epithelial cells and plays an important role in mucosal immunity. In this study, we evaluated the biological activity of the mink-IFN (MiIFN)-Īµ gene in prokaryotic cells. Quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to evaluate IFN-Īµ expression in different mink tissues. MiIFN-Īµ was highly expressed in brain, lung, tracheal, kidney, intestinal, bladder, ovarian, and testis tissues. There was no significant difference in MiIFN-Īµ expression between female and male minks, except in the reproductive system. Expression of the small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO3)-MiIFN-Īµ fusion gene was induced by isopropylĪ²-d-thiogalactoside, and MiIFN-Īµ was collected after SUMO-specific protease digestion. We tested the antiviral activity of MiIFN-Īµ against vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) in epithelial cells of feline kidney 81 (F81). We used qRT-PCR to analyze the expression of several IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs), including ISG15, 2ā€²-5ā€² oligoadenylate synthetase (2ā€²-5ā€²OAS1), and myxovirus resistance protein 1 (Mx1). Recombinant IFN-Īµ induced high ISG expression in F81 cells. Compared with those in the cell control group, expressions of ISG15, Mx1, and 2ā€²-5ā€² OAS1 in the VSV-GFP control, IFN-Īµ, and MiIFN-Īµ-inhibited VSV-GFP groups were significantly increased. Compared with those in the VSV-GFP control group, expressions of ISG15 and 2ā€²-5ā€² OAS1 in the IFN-Īµ and MiIFN-Īµ-inhibited VSV-GFP groups were significantly increased, and the differences were highly significant (p &lt; 0.0001). IFN-Īµ played an indirect antiviral role. These findings lay the foundation for detailed investigation of IFN-Īµ in the future
