This paper presents a probabilistic evaluation, based on Monte-Carlo method, for the estimation of insulation risk of failure of overhead transmission lines (TLs). The proposed method takes into account the wide-band model of tower-footing grounding system. The wide-band model of grounding system in frequency domain is obtained by the method of moment solution to the governing electrical field integral equations. The electrical parameters of soil are considered to be either constant or frequency dependent. The time-domain representation of the grounding system is inferred through pole-zero characterization of its associated frequency response. The case of a typical 400-kV transmission line is modelled in EMTP_RV with the tower-footing grounding system integrated with the transmission line (TL) system. The results of the paper show that the failure risk of transmission lines is affected by the grounding system model. This effect is more pronounced when the soil electrical parameters are assumed to be frequency dependent

Optimal Estimation of Harmonic Components Using ISFLA

In this paper a novel method based on evolutionary algorithms is presented to estimate the harmonic components. In general, the optimization of the harmonic estimation process is a multi-component problem, in which evaluation of the phase and harmonic frequency is the nonlinear part of the problem and is solved based on the mathematical and evolutionary methods; while estimation of amplitude of the harmonic component is a linear issue that is performed by combining the least squares method with the aforementioned approaches. In this paper, firstly, the optimal estimation of integer harmonic components has been introduced based on the improved shuffled frog leaping algorithm (ISFLA) in the presence of two types of noise. The obtained results present the lower error of the proposed method than to IGHS, FBF PSO, GA and FFT methods. Thereafter, the effectiveness of the presented algorithm in optimal estimation of frequency, phase, and amplitude of the integer and non-integer harmonics are investigated. The optimization of the estimation of various harmonic components under different conditions using ISFLA leads to an improvement in the assessment of power quality in power systems especially in the distribution networks, considering a lot of the nonlinear loads and harmonic resources connected to the network

Analysis of Power Transformer Inrush Current in the Presence of Quasi-Direct Currents

The flow of quasi-direct currents (QDCs) in AC electrical networks, is a disturbing factor that mainly prevails upon mutual impacts between different system components or due to geophysical phenomena. These QDCs can alter the normal behavior of the system components, e.g., power transformer inrush currents. In this paper, an analysis of the inrush current phenomenon in power transformers under the influence of QDCs has been performed. The effect of QDCs on power transformer inrush currents is first mathematically analyzed, and then investigated by computer simulations in EMTP-RV software. Results show that power transformer inrush currents can severely increase in the presence of QDCs
