    All abalones belong to the genus Haliotis sensu latu, family Haliotidae. The 75 species known worldwide (Booloot ian et, al. 1962) are anatomically similar and all are adapted for attachment to hard substrates. Seven species are widely distributed along the coast of California (Cox 1962; Mottet 19781, of which several are important in the comercial and sport fisheries of the Pacific Southwest.     X-ray Treatment of Ringworm of the Scalp: A Survey of 2,200 Cases

    The following is an account of the technique used and results obtained in a series of 2200 cases of ringworm of the scalp personally treated by the writer at the dermatological institution of the Metropolitan Asylums Board. Observation of the cases has been facilitated by the fact that all the cases, with very few exceptions, were in-patients, the institution combining the functions of treatment centre and Childrens' Home. Despite the advent of thallium acetate, X-ray depilation still remains the main weapon in the armamentarium of the dermatologist in the treatment of tinea tonsurans, and seems likely to do so, in view of certain defects in the thallium acetate method - notably that of too early regrowth of the hair, and consequent re-infection from retained stumps. The chief advantage claimed for thallium acetate is its practibllity as a method in very young children. It is widely held that it is not possible to irradiate the scalps of children below three years of age. Below will be found a description of the writer's method of restraint of young patients: a method by which the patient can be kept absolutely still during the exposures, and that without harm or discomfort. By this means it is also possible safely to restrain imbecile children of any age within the limits of the Incidence of tinea tonsurans. In the writer's view, X-rays should therefore be preferred to the thallium acetate method in all cases. It is possible through accidental overdosage to kill a patient with the latter: the worst that can happen with Irradiation is an X-ray burn. The chief disadvantage of the X-ray method is the difficulty of arriving at the required accuracy in dosage. The margin of safety is small. Irradiation of the scalp for tinea tonsurans is, in brief, by far the most critical of all X-ray therapy. The percentage of accidents is fortunately small, but they do occur, and in fairness to the patient's parents, and as a safeguard the operator, the parents should be warned of the risk

    Storage and hydrolysis of seawater samples for inorganic carbon isotope analysis

    Preservation of seawater samples was tested for total inorganic carbon (ΣCO2), stable carbon isotope (δ13C), and radiocarbon (14C) applications using foil bags and storage by refrigeration and freezing. The aim was to preserve representative samples with minimal storage effects but without using toxic methods such as mercuric chloride poisoning. Hydrolysis of samples to CO2 was based on existing methods. Results of IAEA-C2 standard used with deionized water stored in the foil bags showed complete reaction yields, 14C results within 2σ of the consensus value, and δ13C that were internally consistent, indicating that there were no procedural effects associated with the foil bags. 14C results were statistically indistinguishable across the storage times, for frozen and refrigerated seawater samples from a coastal site, Elie Ness, Fife, UK. The scatter of ΣCO2 concentrations and δ13C was within scatter observed in other studies for lake- and seawater samples preserved by acidification or using mercuric chloride. However, both ΣCO2 and δ13C were less variable for frozen samples compared with refrigerated samples. The foil bags are lighter, safer to transport, and similar in cost to glass bottles and allow sample collection in the field and transfer to the hydrolysis vessel without exposure of the sample to atmosphere. Storage of seawater samples in the foil bags was considered a reliable, alternative method to poisoning for ΣCO2, δ13C, and 14C, and freezing the samples is recommended for storage time beyond a week

    An empirical study of electricity and gas demand drivers in large food retail buildings of a national organisation

    AbstractFood retail buildings account for a measurable proportion of a country's energy consumption and resultant carbon emissions so energy-operating costs are key business considerations. Increased understanding of end-use energy demands in this sector can enable development of effective benchmarking systems to underpin energy management tools. This could aid identification and evaluation of interventions to reduce operational energy demand. Whilst there are a number of theoretical and semi-empirical benchmarking and thermal modelling tools that can be used for food retail building stocks, these do not readily account for the variance of technical and non-technical factors that can influence end-use demands.This paper discusses the various drivers of energy end-uses of typical UK food retail stores. It reports on an empirical study of one organisation's hypermarket stock to evaluate the influence of various factors on annual store electricity and gas demands. Multiple regression models are discussed in the context of the development and application of a methodology for estimating annual energy end-use demand in food retail buildings. The established models account for 75% of the variation in electricity demand, 50% of the variation in gas demand in stores without CHP and 77% of the variation in gas demand in stores with CHP

    Treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in a remote, conflict-affected area of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

    The Democratic Republic of Congo is a high-burden country for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. Médecins Sans Frontières has supported the Ministry of Health in the conflict-affected region of Shabunda since 1997. In 2006, three patients were diagnosed with drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) and had no options for further treatment. An innovative model was developed to treat these patients despite the remote setting. Key innovations were the devolving of responsibility for treatment to non-TB clinicians remotely supported by a TB specialist, use of simplified monitoring protocols, and a strong focus on addressing stigma to support adherence. Treatment was successfully completed after a median of 24 months. This pilot programme demonstrates that successful treatment for DR-TB is possible on a small scale in remote settings

    The 2dF QSO Redshift Survey

    We present preliminary results from the 2-degree Field (2dF) QSO Redshift Survey currently under way at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This survey aims to determine the redshifts of >25000 QSOs over a redshift range of 0.3<z<3.0 with the primary goal of investigating large-scale structure in the Universe to high redshift and at very large scales (~1000h-1Mpc). We describe the photometric procedure used to select QSO candidates for spectroscopic observation. We then describe results from our first 2dF observations, which have so far measured the redshifts for over 1000 QSOs. We already find a significant detection of clustering and have also found one close pair of QSOs (separation 17'') which are gravitational lens candidates.     Spatial Correlation Function of X-ray Selected AGN

    We present a detailed description of the first direct measurement of the spatial correlation function of X-ray selected AGN. This result is based on an X-ray flux-limited sample of 219 AGN discovered in the contiguous 80.7 deg^2 region of the ROSAT North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Survey. Clustering is detected at the 4 sigma level at comoving scales in the interval r = 5-60 h^-1 Mpc. Fitting the data with a power law of slope gamma=1.8, we find a correlation length of r_0 = 7.4 (+1.8, -1.9) h^-1 Mpc (Omega_M=0.3, Omega_Lambda=0.7). The median redshift of the AGN contributing to the signal is z_xi=0.22. This clustering amplitude implies that X-ray selected AGN are spatially distributed in a manner similar to that of optically selected AGN. Furthermore, the ROSAT NEP determination establishes the local behavior of AGN clustering, a regime which is poorly sampled in general. Combined with high-redshift measures from optical studies, the ROSAT NEP results argue that the AGN correlation strength essentially does not evolve with redshift, at least out to z~2.2. In the local Universe, X-ray selected AGN appear to be unbiased relative to galaxies and the inferred X-ray bias parameter is near unity, b_X~1. Hence X-ray selected AGN closely trace the underlying mass distribution. The ROSAT NEP AGN catalog, presented here, features complete optical identifications and spectroscopic redshifts. The median redshift, X-ray flux, and X-ray luminosity are z=0.41, f_X=1.1*10^-13 cgs, and L_X=9.2*10^43 h_70^-2 cgs (0.5-2.0 keV), respectively.     Properties of hydrophobically modified polyacrylamide with low molecular weight and interaction with surfactant in aqueous solution

    Hydrophobically modified polyacrylamide (HMPAM), with a molecular weight of 104 g/mol, was studied using a range of rheological methods and dynamic light scattering (DLS). DLS measurements indicate that the association of the modified polymer begins at low concentration. The modified polymer with high substitution forms transient networks below the critical concentration, but the networks are disrupted by the micelles formed by the polymer itself, and the networks do not contribute to viscosity enhancement. The modified polymers exhibited surface activity, and so they may be regarded as nonionic polymeric surfactants rather than thickeners. On the other hand, HMPAM is shown to interact with the surfactant SDS while PAM is inert to SDS. In the hydrophobic domains, it undergoes a surfactant-induced association process; in the hydro-phobe-surfactant transition regions, the surfactant binds to the polymer in a noncooperative way and forms a polymer-surfactant complex. Contracted polymer chains begin to extend because of electrostatic repulsion, which can overcome the association at surfactant domains.
