Corn yield tests are conducted each year by the Agronomy department of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station to compare the performance of many hybrids being offered for sale to South Dakota farmers. Entries in these yield trials are the most widely sold commercial hybrids in the areas represented by each test. The information presented should be of value in helping farmers choose a hybrid for planting

Corn yield traits were conducted again in 1951 by the Agronomy department of the South Dakota State College Experiment Station to supply farmers with information on popular hybrids what are planted extensively in the various agricultural areas of the state. The information obtained in the 1951 yield tests reflects the relative performing abilities of different hybrids in a col season. Throughout the season, temperatures averaged several degrees below normal, while moisture was generally excessive. This resulted in a corn crop that was soft and immature. The results are presented in the tables which follow

The information obtained from the 1952 yield trials reflects the relative performing ability of the hybrids in a season having a deficiency of moisture during the later part. Temperatures for the season averaged close to normal, or slightly above, throughout the state. However, in most areas there was a deficiency of moisture the later part of the growing season. This deficiency of moisture, plus a warm late fall, resulted in well matured corn of low moisture content for most areas. The results are presented in the tables which follow
Structural and biophysical properties of a synthetic channel-forming peptide: designing a clinically relevant anion selective pore
The design, synthesis, modeling and in vitro testing of channel-forming peptides derived from the cys-loop superfamily of ligand-gated ion channels are part of an ongoing research focus. Over 300 different sequences have been prepared based on the M2 transmembrane segment of the spinal cord glycine receptor α-subunit. A number of these sequences are water-soluble monomers that readily insert into biological membranes
where they undergo supramolecular assembly, yielding channels with a range of selectivities and conductances. Selection of a sequence for further modifications to yield an optimal lead compound came
down to a few key biophysical properties: low solution concentrations that yield channel activity, greater ensemble conductance, and enhanced ion selectivity. The sequence NK[subscript]4-M2GlyR T19R, S22W (KKKKPARVGLGITTVLTMRTQW) addressed these criteria. The structure of this peptide has been analyzed by solution NMR as
a monomer in detergent micelles, simulated as five-helix bundles in a membrane environment, modified by cysteine-scanning and studied for insertion efficiency in liposomes of selected lipid compositions. Taken together, these results define the structural and key biophysical properties of this sequence in a membrane. This model provides an initial scaffold from which rational substitutions can be proposed and tested to modulate anion selectivity. Examining user comments for deliberative democracy: a corpus-driven analysis of the climate change debate online
The public perception of climate change is characterized by heterogeneity, even polarization. Deliberative discussion is regarded by some as key to overcoming polarization and engaging various publics with the complex issue of climate change. In this context, online engagement with news stories is seen as a space for a new “deliberative democratic potential” to emerge. This article examines aspects of deliberation in user comment threads in response to articles on climate change taken from the Guardian. “Deliberation” is understood through the concepts “reciprocity”, “topicality”, and “argumentation”. We demonstrate how corpus analysis can be used to examine the ways in which online debates around climate change may create or deny opportunities for multiple voices and deliberation. Results show that whilst some aspects of online discourse discourage alternative viewpoints and demonstrate “incivility”, user comments also show potential for engaging in dialog, and for high levels of interaction
CDMSlite: A Search for Low-Mass WIMPs using Voltage-Assisted Calorimetric Ionization Detection in the SuperCDMS Experiment
SuperCDMS is an experiment designed to directly detect Weakly Interacting
Massive Particles (WIMPs), a favored candidate for dark matter ubiquitous in
the Universe. In this paper, we present WIMP-search results using a
calorimetric technique we call CDMSlite, which relies on voltage- assisted
Luke-Neganov amplification of the ionization energy deposited by particle
interactions. The data were collected with a single 0.6 kg germanium detector
running for 10 live days at the Soudan Underground Laboratory. A low energy
threshold of 170 eVee (electron equivalent) was obtained, which allows us to
constrain new WIMP-nucleon spin-independent parameter space for WIMP masses
below 6 GeV/c2.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
A Search for Jet Handedness in Hadronic Decays
We have searched for signatures of polarization in hadronic jets from decays using the ``jet handedness'' method. The polar angle
asymmetry induced by the high SLC electron-beam polarization was used to
separate quark jets from antiquark jets, expected to be left- and
right-polarized, respectively. We find no evidence for jet handedness in our
global sample or in a sample of light quark jets and we set upper limits at the
95% C.L. of 0.063 and 0.099 respectively on the magnitude of the analyzing
power of the method proposed by Efremov {\it et al.}Comment: Revtex, 8 pages, 2 figure
Sport fans' roles in value co-creation
Research question The sports industry has witnessed sustained growth. The cultural, symbolic and stakeholder-embedded nature of sport provides a dynamic setting for developing service research. In this context, an evolution in the logic of value creation can be observed; fans are no longer passive receivers of value but, instead, can be active value co-creators. The sport fan exhibits distinctive characteristics and an ability and willingness to integrate resources and co-produce value propositions, which necessitates an understanding of fan value co-creation. We answer one key research question: what is the role of fans in value co-creation in sports? We do so by conceptually exploring the processes through which sport fans co-create and provide value propositions. Research methods We use case exemplars to provide a base for the theoretical consideration of the role of sport fans in value co-creation. We verify and consolidate the service-dominant logic (SDL) in the sport context. However, due to the high level of abstraction of the SDL as a general theory, we utilize consumer culture theory (CCT) as a middle range theory (MRT) to bridge the gap between contextual descriptions of the role of fans and the SDL. Results and findings Fans evaluate, redefine and reposition value propositions in different sport settings. The three roles of assimilators, adaptors and authenticators in value co-creation are identified through five case exemplars. We extend the theoretical understanding of the processes through which sport fans co-create value. Implications Knowledge of the distinctive characteristics of sport fans and their roles in value co-creation will assist managers in developing effective marketing propositions. Our theoretical contribution will generate new lines of research in the field
Protein profiling in hepatocellular carcinoma by label-free quantitative proteomics in two west african populations.
Background Hepatocellular Carcinoma is the third most common cause of cancer related death worldwide, often diagnosed by measuring serum AFP; a poor performance stand-alone biomarker. With the aim of improving on this, our study focuses on plasma proteins identified by Mass Spectrometry in order to investigate and validate differences seen in the respective proteomes of controls and subjects with LC and HCC. Methods Mass Spectrometry analysis using liquid chromatography electro spray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight was conducted on 339 subjects using a pooled expression profiling approach. ELISA assays were performed on four significantly differentially expressed proteins to validate their expression profiles in subjects from the Gambia and a pilot group from Nigeria. Results from this were collated for statistical multiplexing using logistic regression analysis. Results Twenty-six proteins were identified as differentially expressed between the three subject groups. Direct measurements of four; hemopexin, alpha-1-antitrypsin, apolipoprotein A1 and complement component 3 confirmed their change in abundance in LC and HCC versus control patients. These trends were independently replicated in the pilot validation subjects from Nigeria. The statistical multiplexing of these proteins demonstrated performance comparable to or greater than ALT in identifying liver cirrhosis or carcinogenesis. This exercise also proposed preliminary cut offs with achievable sensitivity, specificity and AUC statistics greater than reported AFP averages. Conclusions The validated changes of expression in these proteins have the potential for development into high-performance tests usable in the diagnosis and or monitoring of HCC and LC patients. The identification of sustained expression trends strengthens the suggestion of these four proteins as worthy candidates for further investigation in the context of liver disease. The statistical combinations also provide a novel inroad of analyses able to propose definitive cut-offs and combinations for evaluation of performance
