Fermion-boson many-body interplay in a frustrated kagome paramagnet

Kagome-net, appearing in areas of fundamental physics, materials, photonic and cold-atom systems, hosts frustrated fermionic and bosonic excitations. However, it is extremely rare to find a system to study both fermionic and bosonic modes to gain insights into their many-body interplay. Here we use state-of-the-art scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to discover unusual electronic coupling to flat-band phonons in a layered kagome paramagnet. Our results reveal the kagome structure with unprecedented atomic resolution and observe the striking bosonic mode interacting with dispersive kagome electrons near the Fermi surface. At this mode energy, the fermionic quasi-particle dispersion exhibits a pronounced renormalization, signaling a giant coupling to bosons. Through a combination of self-energy analysis, first-principles calculation, and a lattice vibration model, we present evidence that this mode arises from the geometrically frustrated phonon flat-band, which is the lattice analog of kagome electron flat-band. Our findings provide the first example of kagome bosonic mode (flat-band phonon) in electronic excitations and its strong interaction with fermionic degrees of freedom in kagome-net materials.Comment: To appear in Nature Communications (2020

The Panax notoginseng@Ag core/shell electrospun fiber membrane was prepared by coaxial electrospinning combined with the UV reduction method (254 nm). The prepared Panax notoginseng@Ag core/shell nanofiber membrane has a three-dimensional structure, and its swelling ratio could reach as high as 199.87%. Traditional Chinese medicine Panax notoginseng can reduce inflammation, and the silver nanoparticles have antibacterial effects, which synergistically promote rapid wound healing. The developed Panax notoginseng@Ag core/shell nanofiber membrane can effectively inhibit the growth of the Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli and the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. The wound healing experiments in Sprague Dawley mice showed that the wound residual area rate of the Panax notoginseng@Ag core/shell electrospun nanofiber membrane group was only 1.52% on day 9, and the wound of this group basically healed on day 12, while the wound residual area rate of the gauze treatment group (control group) was 16.3% and 10.80% on day 9 and day 12, respectively. The wound of the Panax notoginseng@Ag core/shell electrospun nanofiber membrane group healed faster, which contributed to the application of the nanofiber as Chinese medicine rapid wound healing dressings

Study of the Automatic Recognition of Landslides by Using InSAR Images and the Improved Mask R-CNN Model in the Eastern Tibet Plateau

The development of landslide hazards is spatially scattered, temporally random, and poorly characterized. Given the advantages of the large spatial scale and high sensitivity of InSAR observations, InSAR is becoming one of the main techniques for active landslide identification. The difficult problem is how to quickly extract landslide information from extensive InSAR image data. Since the instance segmentation model (Mask R-CNN) in deep learning can provide highly robust target recognition, we select the landslide-prone eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau as a specific test area. Introducing and optimizing this model achieves high-speed and accurate recognition of InSAR observations. First, the InSAR patch landslide instance segmentation dataset (SLD) is established by developing a common object in context (COCO) annotation format conversion code based on InSAR observations. The Mask R-CNN+++ is found by adding three functions of the ResNext module to increase the fineness of the network segmentation results and enhance the noise resistance of the model, the DCB (deformable convolutional block) to improve the feature extraction ability of the network for geometric morphological changes of landslide patches, and an attention mechanism to selectively enhance usefully and suppress features less valuable to the native Mask R-CNN network. The model achieves 92.94% accuracy on the test set, and the active landslide recognition speed based on this model under ordinary computer hardware conditions is 72.3 km2/s. The overall characteristics of the results of this study show that the optimized model effectively enhances the perceptibility of image morphological changes, thereby resulting in smoother recognition boundaries and further improvement of the generalization ability of segmentation detection. This result is expected to serve to identify and monitor active landslides in complex surface conditions on a large spatial scale. Moreover, active landslides of different geometric features, motion patterns, and intensities are expected to be further segmented

A Zero-Dimensional Organic Lead Bromide of (TPA)2PbBr4 Single Crystal with Bright Blue Emission

Blue-luminescence materials are needed in urgency. Recently, zero-dimensional (0D) organic metal halides have attractive much attention due to unique structure and excellent optical properties. However, realizing blue emission with near-UV-visible light excitation in 0D organic metal halides is still a great challenge due to their generally large Stokes shifts. Here, we reported a new (0D) organic metal halides (TPA)2PbBr4 single crystal (TPA+ = tetrapropylammonium cation), in which the isolated [PbBr4]2− tetrahedral clusters are surrounded by organic ligand of TPA+, forming a 0D framework. Upon photoexcitation, (TPA)2PbBr4 exhibits a blue emission peaking at 437 nm with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 50 nm and a relatively small Stokes shift of 53 nm. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and spectral analysis, it is found that the observed blue emission in (TPA)2PbBr4 comes from the combination of free excitons (FEs) and self-trapped exciton (STE), and a small Stokes shift of this compound are caused by the small structure distortion of [PbBr4]2− cluster in the excited state confined by TPA molecules, in which the multi-phonon effect take action. Our results not only clarify the important role of excited state structure distortion in regulating the STEs formation and emission, but also focus on 0D metal halides with bright blue emission under the near-UV-visible light excitation

Controlling the Treatment Time for Ideal Morphology towards Efficient Organic Solar Cells

In this work, we performed a systematic comparison of different duration of solvent vapor annealing (SVA) treatment upon state-of-the-art PM6:SY1 blend film, which is to say for the first time, the insufficient, appropriate, and over-treatment’s effect on the active layer is investigated. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of corresponding organic solar cell (OSC) devices is up to 17.57% for the optimized system, surpassing the two counterparts. The properly tuned phase separation and formed interpenetrating network plays an important role in achieving high efficiency, which is also well-discussed by the morphological characterizations and understanding of device physics. Specifically, these improvements result in enhanced charge generation, transport, and collection. This work is of importance due to correlating post-treatment delicacy, thin-film morphology, and device performance in a decent way

Super-Broad-Wavelength-Range Polarization-Selective Exciton-Polariton in Sn-Doped CdS Nanowires

The polarization-coupled exciton-polariton is promising for applications in polarization-associated optoelectronic devices. Although a room-temperature exciton-polariton has been observed in many nanostructures, super-broad-wavelength-range polarization-selective exciton-polariton output remains elusive. Here, a room-temperature exciton-polariton is demonstrated by angle-resolved photoluminescence (ARPL) spectroscopy in Sn-doped CdS nanowires. Due to the reduction of cross-section radius, the polarization splitting between transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes increases. The maximum splitting value can reach 45 meV when the cross-section is 0.548 μm. Taking advantage of the interaction’s polarization effect between the photon and exciton, polarization-selective exciton-polariton output is realized, and the wavelength tuning range is more than 200 nm. These results provide useful enlightenment to construct polarization polaritonic devices at room temperature

Plasmon–Microcavity Coupling and Fabry–Pèrot Lasing in a ZnO:Ga Microwire/p-Type Gallium Nitride Heterojunction

In recent years, electroluminescent devices of ZnO have been the focus of attention and research. In this paper, we fabricated a ZnO:Ga microwire/p-type gallium nitride heterojunction light-emitting diode and found a lasing emission near the silver electrode. We interpret this lasing as trap-state FP-mode lasing because a series of small peaks appear in the spectrum and the positions of three lasing peaks are close to the emission peak from the trap state. After sputtering gold on the surface of the ZnO:Ga microwire, the luminescence of the device was enhanced and anomalous spectral signals appeared at a reverse current of 20 mA. The luminescence enhancement is due to the hot electron transfer induced by plasmons, and the strange spectral phenomenon was attributed to the Fano resonance caused by plasmon–microcavity coupling. The above research can provide some guidance for the design of LEDs and laser devices

Multicomponent Solar Cells with High Fill Factors and Efficiencies Based on Non-Fullerene Acceptor Isomers

Multicomponent organic solar cells (OSCs), such as the ternary and quaternary OSCs, not only inherit the simplicity of binary OSCs but further promote light harvesting and power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, we propose a new type of multicomponent solar cells with non-fullerene acceptor isomers. Specifically, we fabricate OSCs with the polymer donor J71 and a mixture of isomers, ITCF, as the acceptors. In comparison, the ternary OSC devices with J71 and two structurally similar (not isomeric) NFAs (IT-DM and IT-4F) are made as control. The morphology experiments reveal that the isomers-containing blend film demonstrates increased crystallinity, more ideal domain size, and a more favorable packing orientation compared with the IT-DM/IT-4F ternary blend. The favorable orientation is correlated with the balanced charge transport, increased exciton dissociation and decreased bimolecular recombination in the ITCF-isomer-based blend film, which contributes to the high fill factor (FF), and thus the high PCE. Additionally, to evaluate the generality of this method, we examine other acceptor isomers including IT-M, IXIC-2Cl and SY1, which show same trend as the ITCF isomers. These results demonstrate that using isomeric blends as the acceptor can be a promising approach to promote the performance of multicomponent non-fullerene OSCs
