Assessment of Forest Products Undergraduate Education in the United States

    Get PDF
Traditional Forest Products/Wood Science programs have been curtailed and/or merged into other programs at many universities during the last 10 yr. Current economic challenges throughout the nation are continuing this trend. This trend is somewhat alarming when one considers the implications for education and development of the next generation of scientists in this very critically important field. If proper training programs and adequate professionals are not available, the conservative, wise, and perpetual utilization of renewable natural resources could be compromised for future generations

Giant Molecular Clouds are More Concentrated to Spiral Arms than Smaller Clouds

From our catalog of Milky Way molecular clouds, created using a temperature thresholding algorithm on the Bell Laboratories 13CO Survey, we have extracted two subsets:(1) Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs), clouds that are definitely larger than 10^5 solar masses, even if they are at their `near distance', and (2) clouds that are definitely smaller than 10^5 solar masses, even if they are at their `far distance'. The positions and velocities of these clouds are compared to the loci of spiral arms in (l, v) space. The velocity separation of each cloud from the nearest spiral arm is introduced as a `concentration statistic'. Almost all of the GMCs are found near spiral arms. The density of smaller clouds is enhanced near spiral arms, but some clouds (~10%) are unassociated with any spiral arm. The median velocity separation between a GMC and the nearest spiral arm is 3.4+-0.6 km/s, whereas the median separation between smaller clouds and the nearest spiral arm is 5.5+-0.2 km/s.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

: A common form of dyslipidemia is often associated with cardiovascular disease which is hypertriglyceridemia. Triglycerides in the body is mainly used as energy storage for a variety of metabolic processes. Poco-poco gymnastics from North Sulawesi. The purpose of this study is to find out the influence of poco-poco gymnastics to triglyceride blood levels. Methods: This study is experimental using one group pre and post test design, the subjects were 25 female students year 2013 Science and Mathematic Faculty of Pharmacyof Sam Ratulangi University Manado who met the inclusion criterias. Data was analyzed using paired t test. Results: Based on the research that has done from 25 subjects it was obtained that there was a decrease in mean triglyceride levels before and after poco-poco gymnastics for four weeks. However, this decrease was not significant (p=0,366). Conclusion: There was a decrease in triglyceride levels after poco-poco exercises for four weeks but this is not significant

A Positive Relationship Between Religious Faith and Forgiveness: Faith in the Absence of Data?

Religious faith and beliefs appear to play an important role in the lives of many individuals and are the topic of much research. The present study investigated the relationship between religious faith and forgiveness in a sample (n = 196) of college students. Students were asked to complete the Heartland Forgiveness Scale and the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire. Analyses of scores on both measures revealed a positive, significant correlation between these constructs, suggesting that there is a meaningful relationship between religious faith and the tendency to forgive. Implications and directions for further research are discussed

: Aerobic exercise is a kind of exercise systematically by increasing the load gradually and continuously using energy derived from the combustion using oxygen, and takes oxygen without causing fatigue. Examples of aerobic exercise is the way, jogging, running, cycling, and swimming. Physical fitness is the body's ability to function effectively when working or doing other things, and still have enough energy to handle or emergencies that may arise. Before planning to do aerobic exercise, namely: the frequency of exercise three to five times every week, exercise intensity 60 - 80% of maximum heart rate, and duration of exercise 20 – 60 minutes.mConclusion: With regular aerobic exercise, blood flow to be smooth and speed up the disposal of metabolic waste substances, so that recovery takes place rapidly, and the person with not experience fatigue after performing the task, and still be able to perform other activities. Benefits of aerobic exercise training is increased physical fitness

Secondary organic aerosol formation from isoprene photooxidation under high-NO_x conditions

The oxidation of isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene) is known to play a central role in the photochemistry of the troposphere, but is generally not considered to lead to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), due to the relatively high volatility of known reaction products. However, in the chamber studies described here, we measure SOA production from isoprene photooxidation under high-NO_x conditions, at significantly lower isoprene concentrations than had been observed previously. Mass yields are low (0.9–3.0%), but because of large emissions, isoprene photooxidation may still contribute substantially to global SOA production. Results from photooxidation experiments of compounds structurally similar to isoprene (1,3-butadiene and 2- and 3-methyl-1-butene) suggest that SOA formation from isoprene oxidation proceeds from the further reaction of first-generation oxidation products (i.e., the oxidative attack of both double bonds). The gas-phase chemistry of such oxidation products is in general poorly characterized and warrants further study

Cloud condensation nuclei activity, closure, and droplet growth kinetics of Houston aerosol during the Gulf of Mexico Atmospheric Composition and Climate Study (GoMACCS)

In situ cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) measurements were obtained in the boundary layer over Houston, Texas, during the 2006 Gulf of Mexico Atmospheric Composition and Climate Study (GoMACCS) campaign onboard the CIRPAS Twin Otter. Polluted air masses in and out of cloudy regions were sampled for a total of 22 flights, with CCN measurements obtained for 17 of these flights. In this paper, we focus on CCN closure during two flights, within and downwind of the Houston regional plume and over the Houston Ship Channel. During both flights, air was sampled with particle concentrations exceeding 25,000 cm^(−3) and CCN concentrations exceeding 10,000 cm^(−3). CCN closure is evaluated by comparing measured concentrations with those predicted on the basis of measured aerosol size distributions and aerosol mass spectrometer particle composition. Different assumptions concerning the internally mixed chemical composition result in average CCN overprediction ranging from 3% to 36% (based on a linear fit). It is hypothesized that the externally mixed fraction of the aerosol contributes much of the CCN closure scatter, while the internally mixed fraction largely controls the overprediction bias. On the basis of the droplet sizes of activated CCN, organics do not seem to impact, on average, the CCN activation kinetics
