Personality, Motivation, and the War Between Facebook and Twitter

    Get PDF
Social networking sites (SNSs) have recently become integrated in modern lives as entertainment, communication, and even careers have become more reliant on them. The current study explored the relationship between Facebook and Twitter attachment and demographic, motivation, and personality traits. Differing psychological relationships may explain why people become more attached to specific SNSs as well as explain their continuance of use. Using online self-report measures, this study measured motivations to use Facebook and Twitter, the Big Five personality traits, and Facebook/Twitter attachment of 109 participants who have been users of both Facebook and Twitter. Results of hierarchical multiple regressions showed that conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism, and openness to experience were unable to explain a significant amount of attachment to Facebook or Twitter. Facebook attachment was explained by the motivation to pass time and interact socially whereas Twitter attachment was explained by the motivation to pass time and share information. These findings can help media researchers, as well as companies, understand why people become attached to various SNSs

Job Satisfaction among Women in the United Arab Emirates

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that contribute to job satisfaction for employed Emirati females in the United Arab Emirates. Survey data were collected from 1272 workers in both private and public sectors in all seven emirates of the UAE. Almost 50% of these women were married, 45% single, 4% divorced and 1% widows. Regression results indicated three prominent factors that enhance job satisfaction – age, education, and income. There is a positive significant relationship between job satisfaction and age. Second, employed females with education beyond the secondary level are more satisfied with their jobs than those with less than the secondary level (p-values less than 0.05). Third, the employed females with high incomes are more satisfied with their jobs than those who earn less (p-value=0.034)

Conservation of Arid Plants through Improved Understanding of Seed Biology as a Means of Enhancing the Functionality of Botanic Gardens

    Get PDF
This study analysed the seed biology of species from the semi-arid Pilbara region to assist restoration programs. Afterripening, wet/dry cycling and scarification were found to overcome physiological dormancy in selected native understorey species, while seed priming was also found to enhance germination. Through a world-wide survey the study also defined the functionality of botanic gardens from different continents; the outcomes of which will aid the development of strategic planning for botanic gardens in arid regions

Food crisis: dilemmas in developing countries

    Get PDF
For more than three decades, food shortages have created serious difficulties throughout the world. Developing countries in particular face the devastating effects of this brutal problem. Although there is agreement that a problem exists, controversy abounds on what causes food shortages in developing countries. For some, the developing countries are responsible because their beliefs and socioeconomic institutions create obstacles to development. Others blame the developed countries for extracting natural resources from poor countries and placing other obstacles in the way of development. This study applies two widely used theories--modernization and dependency--to issues of food shortages. Internal and external factors related to food shortages are examined in 89 developing countries. Of the eight independent variables in the study--number of tractors, gross national product, population growth, political stability, physical quality of life, external capital, colonization, and external debt--only the first two are related to calorie intake, however;Findings support modernization theory; the most important factors creating food shortages in developing countries are internal--number of tractors and gross national product per capita. Potential external factors have no strong relationships with food shortages in developing countries. However, in solving food shortages in developing countries the two factors--internal and external--should be considered;Policy makers in developing countries should take practical steps to speed up this transitional stage to preconditions for the take-off stage. Local governments are encouraged to focus their attention on promoting the rural economy to lessen the effects of poverty in these areas. Rich countries are expected to help poor ones to reform their local institutions to meet the challenge of development. Finally, extension and research services are needed, with the help of local indigenous knowledge systems, to modernize farming systems in developing countries. Research is also needed on the effects of other internal factors such as population growth and poverty

An Epidemiological, Diagnostic, and Therapeutic Study of the Leishmania tropica Parasite in Iraq’s Anbar Province

    Get PDF
This paper involved the registration of 1,936 cases of infection of the Leishmania tropica parasite observed at hospitals and health centers in Ramadi, Fallujah, Baghdadi, and Hit during 2017. The results revealed that the highest rates of infection were found in Ramadi and Fallujah. The 1-10 years age group recorded the highest rate at 35.5%. There was no significant difference (p ≥ 0.05) between the sexes. December and January saw the highest rate of infection, where the rate in rural townships was found to be 65.5%, higher than in urban regions which saw a rate of 34.4%. Facial lesions were the most prominent area of infection, recorded at a rate of 41.3%. The study also included an examination of 180 rodents (94 mice and 86 black rats) - the investigation demonstrated the presence of the amastigote stage at a rate of 43.6% among mice and 53.4% among rats. The study also involved an analysis of the impact of the use of a water extract from the Rhanterium epapposum plant, also locally known as the Arfaj plant, on Leishmania tropica parasite growth. As part of this study, a concentration of between 0.05-5 mg/ml was used. The application of these concentrations led to an inhibitory effect on parasite growth - an application of relatively higher concentrations caused greater effects in times of growth between 1-5 days

Detection of Sperm DNA Integrity and Some Immunological Aspects in Infertile Males

    Get PDF
Immunoinfertility caused by anti-sperm antibodies (ASAs) represents about 10–20% of infertility among couples, which interfere with sperm motility and ability to penetrate cervical mucus, sperm-oocyte binding, fertilization, and embryo development. In addition, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damages are increasingly found with infertile cases affecting male reproduction potency and progeny. This study aims to assess the semen, presence of ASAs, and DNA fragmentation index in normozoospermic patients. A total number of 116 cases with an average age of 20–51 years old, and duration of infertility at 4.70 ± 2.77 are classified into 77 and 39 primary and secondary types of infertility, respectively. Mixed agglutination reaction test was used to estimate the ASAs in semen (direct method) and in seminal plasma and blood serum (indirect method), for both immunoglobulins IgG and IgA. Acridine orange test was used to detect DNA fragmentation index. The results showed a significant difference (P > 0.05) for those with a secondary type of infertility at means 24.37 and 31.48 for IgG, and 14.46 ± 1.76 and 6.86 ± 0.39 for IgA by both direct and indirect methods, respectively. The direct method showed a significant difference only for the sperm tail, while that for indirect method was in sperm mid-piece. The mean of DFI for all cases was 38.25 ± 2.08, at 41.61 ± 2.19 and 31.63 ± 4.29, for both primary and secondary cases, respectively. The percentage of ASAs revealed no significant difference with DFI, except in some parts of sperm
