East-West Divides and Nord Stream 2

The contentious Nord Stream 2 pipeline has revived the fundamental differences of opinion that divided the allies during the Cold War and created new inter-European tensions. A closer look at the crises in the Western alliance occasioned by the Druzhba oil pipeline in the 1960s and the Yamal-Urengoi gas pipeline in the 1980s reveals the continuity of disagreements between Europe and the US, as well as showing similar patterns of weaponizing Western technology and sanctions. If history is any guide, lessons from the past might provide an indication of how to resolve the ongoing crisis over Nord Stream 2

Functionally specialized human CD4+ T-cell subsets express physicochemically distinct TCRs

The organizational integrity of the adaptive immune system is determined by functionally discrete subsets of CD4+ T cells, but it has remained unclear to what extent lineage choice is influenced by clonotypically expressed T-cell receptors (TCRs). To address this issue, we used a high-throughput approach to profile the αβ TCR repertoires of human naive and effector/memory CD4+ T-cell subsets, irrespective of antigen specificity. Highly conserved physicochemical and recombinatorial features were encoded on a subset-specific basis in the effector/memory compartment. Clonal tracking further identified forbidden and permitted transition pathways, mapping effector/memory subsets related by interconversion or ontogeny. Public sequences were largely confined to particular effector/memory subsets, including regulatory T cells (Tregs), which also displayed hardwired repertoire features in the naive compartment. Accordingly, these cumulative repertoire portraits establish a link between clonotype fate decisions in the complex world of CD4+ T cells and the intrinsic properties of somatically rearranged TCRs

Eurasian Economic Union

The topic of this issue is the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Firstly, Alexander Libman argues that the integration milestones set in the EAEU Treaty are frequently achieved at the cost of diluting the content of the subsequent integration steps, with countries accepting smaller obligations than originally envisioned. This situation is unlikely to change in the future. Secondly, Maria Shagina discusses the effects of Russia’s uncoordinated counter-measures against Western sanctions in the wake of the Ukraine crisis. She theorizes that these counter-measures caused collateral damage, unleashed unintended consequences on Russia’s fellow EAEU members and have hampered the Union’s further integration.Diese Ausgabe des RAD beschäftigt sich mit der Eurasischen Wirtschaftsunion (Eurasian Economic Union EAEU). Nord Stream 2: It's Time to Change Perspective

The debate around the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is overly politicized. A change in perspective is needed. In the long term, Ukraine as the country most affected could strengthen its position by developing into a green energy producer within the European energy market, argue Jeronim Perović and Maria Shagina in this CSS Policy Perspective. Nord Stream 2 and the energy security dilemma: opportunities, options and obstacles for a grand bargain

Washington and Berlin have settled their differences over the gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea. For the time being, this has halted the spiralling energy security dilemma. While Washington is sending a clear signal that constructive relations with Berlin are important, the German government is now called upon to implement a variety of measures. Still, the project remains a political issue. Kyiv and Warsaw have already signalled their opposition. A grand bargain that is not only bilaterally agreed upon but also involves Ukraine and commits Russia has not yet been achieved. (author's abstract
