Toward a neurophysiological foundation for altered states of consciousness

    Get PDF
Singh's cultural evolutionary theory posits that methods of inducing shamanic altered states of consciousness differ, resulting in profoundly different cognitive states. We argue that, despite different methods of induction, altered states of consciousness share neurophysiological features and cause shared cognitive and behavioral effects. This common foundation enables further cross-cultural comparison of shamanic activities that is currently left out of Singh's theory

Background: To observe the morphological effectstaking place in ultrasound treated rabbit’s ovaries byobserving the total atretic follicles count. Methods: This experimental study was conducted atNational Institute of Health Islamabad and Army MedicalCollege Rawalpindi. Forty adult, non pregnant femalerabbits (Oryctolagus Cuniculus strain) weight 900 gm-1500gm were used. They were divided in four groups, I, II, III& IV, each containing ten rabbits, Group I was taken ascontrol. Ovaries of others were exposed to ultrasoundfrequency of 3.5 MHz and intensity of 96 dB for twominutes for 3, 6 and 12 days. After euthanasia, ovarieswere dissected, fixed and processed. Atretic follicles fromthe largest cross section stained by heamatoxylin and eosinwere counted. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used forstatistical comparison among groups. Results: The current study showed increase in totalatretic follicles count especially in group IIIConclusion: Exposure to ultrasound producesmorphological changes in ovarie

Why rare-earth ferromagnets are so rare: insights from the p-wave Kondo model

Magnetic exchange in Kondo lattice systems is of the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida type, whose sign depends on the Fermi wave vector, kFk_F . In the simplest setting, for small kFk_F , the interaction is predominately ferromagnetic, whereas it turns more antiferromagnetic with growing kFk_F. It is remarkable that even though kFk_F varies vastly among the rare-earth systems, an overwhelming majority of lanthanide magnets are in fact antiferromagnets. To address this puzzle, we investigate the effects of a p-wave form factor for the Kondo coupling pertinent to nearly all rare-earth intermetallics. We show that this leads to interference effects which for small kF are destructive, greatly reducing the size of the RKKY interaction in the cases where ferromagnetism would otherwise be strongest. By contrast, for large kFk_F, constructive interference can enhance antiferromagnetic exchange. Based on this, we propose a new route for designing ferromagnetic rare-earth magnets.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

Impact of Stress Management on Job Performance: An Empirical Study of Textile Sector Employees In Karachi

    Get PDF
This paper is intended to determine the impact of stress on job performance of the employees. It is based on empirical research conducted on 100 employees of 10 Textiles of Karachi. The data was collected through questionnaires based on close-ended questions. The results obtained from the data revealed that workload, stress, and inadequate monitory reward are the prime reasons to influence on employee job performance. Thus it is recommended that employer should reduce the level of stress to get maximum output from employee, provide adequate monetary benefits according to their work and educate employees by providing trainings and counselling to achieve goals and objectives and to be satisfied with their job. Keywords: Job Performance, Stress, Work Load, Inadequate Monetary Benefit, Job Satisfaction
