The Claims Culture: A Taxonomy of Industry Attitudes
This paper presents an analysis of a familiar aspect of construction industry culture that we have dubbed 'the claims culture'. This is a culture of contract administration that lays a strong emphasis on the planning and management of claims. The principal elements of the analysis are two sets of distinctions. The first comprises economic and occupational orders, referring to two kinds of control that are exercised over the construction process; predicated respectively on economic ownership and occupational competence. The second refers to contrasting attitudes towards relationships and problem solving within these orders: respectively 'distributive' and 'integrative'. The concepts of economic and occupational order entail further sub-categories. The various attitudes associated with these categories and sub-categories are described. They are assessed as to their consequences for change initiatives in the industry
Novices Outperform Experienced Laparoscopists on Virtual Reality Laparoscopy Simulator
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Virtual reality has been poorly studied among gynecologic surgeons. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether performance on the Minimally Invasive Surgery Trainer-Virtual Reality (MIST-VR) laparoscopic trainer reflects laparoscopic experience among gynecologic surgeons and trainees. METHODS: Twenty-six medical students, residents, and attending gynecologic surgeons completed a MIST-VR training program. A new simulated task was then presented to each participant, who repeated the task until proficiency was reached. RESULTS: Attending physicians performed poorly when compared with medical students, requiring more than twice the number of attempts to reach proficiency (Mann-Whitney P\u3c0.01). Among medical students and residents, there was an association between years of live laparoscopy experience and poor simulator performance (Spearman r P=0.01). CONCLUSION: Increased operating room experience and age were associated with worsening simulator performance. Several potential explanations for this trend are discussed, including lack of tactile and contextual feedback. Caution should be exercised when considering current virtual reality simulator technology as a measure of experience or ability among gynecologic surgeons
A major subtropical fruit pest accumulates in crop fields and spills over to a wild host
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.Wild plant species are often considered a source of crop pests in mixed landscapes but this view rarely considers pest spillover in the opposite direction (from crop fields to natural vegetation), or spatiotemporal variability in resources between crop and wild habitats. We investigate how infestation of mango crop (Mangifera indica, Anacardiaceae) and a related wild host (marula, Sclerocarya birrea, Anacardiaceae) by a major subtropical fruit crop pest (Ceratitis cosyra, Diptera: Tephritidae) varies with distance from the boundary between crop and natural vegetation. We determined how infestation of marula is associated with proximity to mango crops at field and landscape scales over two fruiting seasons on three farms in north-eastern South Africa. This is one of few studies to date to consider pest spillover from crop fields to natural vegetation and the only one performed in a biodiverse region with relatively little habitat transformation. Over three sampling periods, C. cosyra infestation of marula always decreased with distance from mango fields. At the landscape scale, marula alongside crop fields were 30 times more likely to be infested than in distant vegetation (1.3–6 km from mango), suggesting that spillover occurs from crop fields to natural vegetation. During late mango and marula fruiting, twice as many flies infested marula than mango. However, over the two months post-mango fruiting, up to 25 times more C. cosyra were trapped in mango fields than in bordering natural vegetation. Although pests spillover from crop fields into natural vegetation to use marula as an alternate host, biological control in the natural vegetation may eliminate this habitat as a pest reservoir outside the crop season. Other nearby crops may be more important than wild hosts for maintaining C. cosyra out of mango season. Landscape planning should consider proximity and arrangement of fields containing crops that host shared pests at different times of the year. This research was supported by the Mare Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme [Contract number 318929]; the National Research Foundation of South Africa [Grant number 90139]; and the South African Department of Science and Technology [Contract number 0054/2013]

Factorization and soft-gluon divergences in isolated-photon cross sections
We study the production of isolated photons in annihilation and give
the proof of the all-order factorization of the collinear singularities. These
singularities are absorbed in the standard fragmentation functions of partons
into a photon, while the effects of the isolation are consistently included in
the short-distance cross section. We compute this cross section at order \as
and show that it contains large double logarithms of the isolation parameters.
We explain the physical origin of these logarithms and discuss the possibility
to resum them to all orders in \as.Comment: 18 pages, LaTex, 2 eps figures, few modifications in the text,

Second-hand Smoke Increases Nitric Oxide and Alters the IgE Response in a Murine Model of Allergic Aspergillosis
This study was performed to determine the effects of environmental
tobacco smoke (ETS) on nitric oxide (NO) and immunoglobulin (Ig) production in
a murine model of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). Adult
BALB/c mice were exposed to aged and diluted sidestream cigarette smoke
from day 0 through day 43 to simulate “second-hand
smoke”. During exposure,
mice were sensitized to soluble Aspergillus fumigatus (Af)
antigen intranasally
between day 14 and 24. All Af sensitized mice in ambient air (Af + AIR) made
elevated levels of IgE, IgG1, IgM, IgG2a and IgA. Af sensitized mice housed in
ETS (Af + ETS) made similar levels of immunoglobulins except for IgE that was
significantly reduced in the serum and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). However,
immunohistochemical evaluation of the lung revealed a marked accumulation of
IgE positive cells in the lung parenchyma of these Af + ETS mice. LPS stimulation
of BAL cells revealed elevated levels of NO in the Af + AIR group, which was further
enhanced in the Af+ETS group. In vitro restimulation of the BAL cells on day 45
showed a TH0 response with elevated levels of IL3, 4, 5, 10 and IFN-γ. However,
by day 28 the response shifted such that TH2 cytokines increased while
IFN-γ decreased. The Af + ETS group showed markedly reduced levels in all
cytokines tested, including the inflammatory cytokine IL6, when compared to
the Af+AIR group. These results demonstrate that ETS affects ABPA by further
enhancing the NO production and reduces
the TH2 and the inflammatory cytokines while altering the pattern of IgE responses
Gender Differences in the Allergic Response of Mice Neonatally Exposed to Environmental Tobacco Smoke
Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) has been shown to increase allergic sensitization and reactivity and there has been some suggestion that the influence of ETS on the allergic response is dissimilar in males and females. It is to be determined whether gender differences exist in the IgE response to ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization following ETS exposure from the neonatal period through adulthood. To address this thesis, we examined gender differences in OVA sensitization of BALB/c mice housed from birth through adulthood under smoking and nonsmoking conditions. At 6 weeks of age (day 0) all mice were injected i.p. with OVA in aluminum hydroxide adjuvant followed by three 20 min exposures to 1% aerosolized OVA between day 14 and 80. There were significantly (p<0.05) more total and OVA specific IgE and IgG1 in the serum of females compared to males. Moreover, these sex responses, along with eosinophilia, were further enhanced in mice exposed to ETS. There were also significantly more IgE positive cells in the lungs of female, but not male, mice exposed to ETS compared with ambient air (p<0.05). There was also an elevation of Th2 cytokines (IL4, IL5, IL10, and IL13) after re-stimulation of lung homogenates following ETS exposure. These data demonstrate that female animals are significantly more susceptible than males to the influence of ETS on the allergic response
