The purpose of this paper is to examine world trends and perspectives on the International Year of Volunteers (IYV 2001) in order to get new suggestions for our study on volunteerism. The materials were obtained by references, Internet, and documents from IYV related organizations. On international perspectives of IYV 2001, the authors examine the 5 points: (1) The 11th and 16th World Volunteer Conference and The Universal Declaration on Volunteering by IAVE, (2) "Strategy 2000" by UNV, (3) Guidance Notes for IYV 2001, (4) "Volunteering and Social Development" adopted at the Commission for Social Development UN on Feb. 23, 2001, (5) process of establishment of The International Volunteer Day (IVD) for Economic and Social Development on Dec. 5 and the evaluation of IYV itself in Global Closing Event of IYV on Dec. 5, 2001. Above all, the authors reconfirmed that it was difficult to define volunteerism universally. IYV and IAVE recognized as important two keywords, "equality" and "solidarity." The authors gave the term "volunteer activity" an original definition in this paper

What is considered important in industrial countries is the changing consumption patterns discussed at the UNCED (United Nations Conference on Environment and Development) held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the Japanese lifestyle in the 1990s from the data related Consumer Price Index (CPI). The CPI is calculated to measure chronologically, the price movements of commodities and services which are purchased by consumers\u27 households throughout the country. Index items are selected according to the relative importance of each item to the total consumption expenditures, the representativeness of items in price movements, and the feasibility of price collection over time, thus index items may represent price movements of all the commodities and services purchased by consumers. In and after 1955, the base periods have been revised every five years. The results were as follows: the imported commodities increased, a tendency toward "Luxury" was recognized, leisure oriented product and services increased, commodities for the promotion of health multiplied, traditional commodities decreased, and the trend toward a service economy expanded. It was showed that the CPI related data was useful for understanding a part of actual situation of the Japanese lifestyle

The conventional theories of lifestyle in Japan have been based on the aspect that lifestyle is composed of the system of means of subsistence and have often neglected the aspect of actual time allocation. We consider the timeallocation, particularly that for labor and leisure through life, as another significant component of lifestyle. The purpose of this paper is to examine labor, leisure, and the relations between them from the viewpoint of the history and the Gender analisis, to point out the present problems in Japan, and the finally to give the forecasted future evolution. It is forecasted that the variety of working style both men and women choose for themselves, the participation of women in workplace (the labor feminization), the changes in working style, the pursuit of labor as the purpose of life, and the aging of the people will progress due to the shortening of men\u27s paid working hours and total lifetime working years and the increase in men\u27s non-paid working hours (the reverse in women) in the future socirty. With the accomplished new relations of production throughout the world, the further developed productive forces, and the enhanced thought of human rights, the qualitative, temporal difference will become less in labor and leisure between men and women, and labor and leisure will more overlap each ohter
