    Under what conditions do gender differences exist in power and achievement values? The moderating role of gender ideology

    Previous studies revealed differences between men and women in value priorities. It has been asserted that men do inherently attribute more importance than women to power and achievement values. Our study brings a sociocultural lens into account employing gender ideology as a moderator of the gender differences in these values. Specifically, we hypothesized that internalization and endorsement of gender role ideology shape gender differences in power and achievement values. We focused on two components of gender ideology as moderators of the gender differences in values: primacy of the breadwinner role, and acceptance of male privilege. We used data from the World Values Survey wave six (89,565 participants from 60 countries). Results indicated that gender ideology moderated the relationship between gender and the endorsement of achievement and power values. Specifically, the relationship between gender and achievement was significantly moderated by acceptance of male privilege, but not of primacy of the breadwinner role. In addition, the association between gender and power was significantly moderated by primacy of the breadwinner role, but not by acceptance of male privilege. In other words, when participants endorse egalitarian gender ideologies, gender differences in power and achievement disappear or even reverse. We contrast previous perspectives assuming inherent gender differences in human values and argue that such differences are related to beliefs in gendered separate spheres

    Influence of input climatic data on simulations of annual energy needs of a building: energyplus and WRF modeling for a case study in Rome (Italy)

    The simulation of the energy consumptions in an hourly regime is necessary in order to perform calculations on residential buildings of particular relevance for volume or for architectural features. In such cases, the simplified methodology provided by the regulations may be inadequate, and the use of software like EnergyPlus is needed. To obtain reliable results, usually, significant time is spent on the meticulous insertion of the geometrical inputs of the building, together with the properties of the envelope materials and systems. Less attention is paid to the climate database. The databases available on the EnergyPlus website refer to airports located in rural areas near major cities. If the building to be simulated is located in a metropolitan area, it may be affected by the local heat island, and the database used as input to the software should take this phenomenon into account. To this end, it is useful to use a meteorological model such as the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to construct an appropriate input climate file. A case study based on a building located in the city center of Rome (Italy) shows that, if the climatic forcing linked to the heat island is not considered, the estimated consumption due to the cooling is underestimated by 35–50%. In particular, the analysis and the seasonal comparison between the energy needs of the building simulated by EnergyPlus, with the climatic inputs related to two airports in the rural area of Rome and with the inputs provided by the WRF model related to the center of Rome, show discrepancies of about (i) WRF vs. Fiumicino (FCO): Δ = −3.48% for heating, Δ = 49.25% for cooling; (ii) WRF vs. Ciampino (CIA): Δ = −7.38% for heating, Δ = +35.52% for cooling

    FindGeo: a tool for determining metal coordination geometry.

    Abstract Summary: Metals are essential for the structure and function of many proteins and nucleic acids. The geometrical arrangement of the atoms that coordinate a metal in a biological macromolecule is an important determinant of the specificity and role of that metal. At present, however, this information can be retrieved only from the literature, which sometimes contains an improper or incorrect description of the geometry, and often lacks it altogether. Thus, we developed FindGeo to quickly and easily determine the coordination geometry of selected, or all, metals in a given structure. FindGeo works by superimposing the metal-coordinating atoms in the input structure to a library of templates with alternative ideal geometries, which are ranked by RMSD to identify the best geometry assignment.     Cryptocurrencies activity as a complex network: Analysis of transactions graphs

    The number of users approaching the world of cryptocurrencies exploded in the last years, and consequently the daily interactions on their underlying distributed ledgers have intensified. In this paper, we analyze the flow of these digital transactions in a certain period of time, trying to discover important insights on the typical use of these technologies by studying, through complex network theory, the patterns of interactions in four prominent and different Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs), namely Bitcoin, DogeCoin, Ethereum, Ripple. In particular, we describe the Distributed Ledger Network Analyzer (DiLeNA), a software tool for the investigation of the transactions network recorded in DLTs. We show that studying the network characteristics and peculiarities is of paramount importance, in order to understand how users interact in the DLT. For instance, our analyses reveal that all transaction graphs exhibit small world properties

    This paper describes the Distributed Ledger Network Analyzer (DiLeNA), a new software tool for the analysis of the transactions network recorded in Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs). The set of transactions in a DLT forms a complex network. Studying its characteristics and peculiarities is of paramount importance, in order to understand how users interact in the distributed ledger system. The tool design and implementation is introduced and some results are provided.     Design Patterns for Multilevel Modeling and Simulation

    Multilevel modeling and simulation (M&S) is becoming increasingly relevant due to the benefits that this methodology offers. Multilevel models allow users to describe a system at multiple levels of detail. From one side, this can make better use of computational resources, since the more detailed and time-consuming models can be executed only when/where required. From the other side, multilevel models can be assembled from existing components, cutting down development and verification/validation time. A downside of multilevel M&S is that the development process becomes more complex due to some recurrent issues caused by the very nature of multilevel models: how to make sub-models interoperate, how to orchestrate execution, how state variables are to be updated when changing scale, and so on. In this paper, we address some of these issues by presenting a set of design patterns that provide a systematic approach for designing and implementing multilevel models. The proposed design patterns cover multiple aspects, including how to represent different levels of detail, how to combine incompatible models, how to exchange data across models, and so on. Some of the patterns are derived from the general software engineering literature, while others are specific to the multilevel M&S application area

    The purpose of this study is to explore emotional intelligence in association with effective sales performance. The participants involved in this study were sellers in a home furniture company and completed a new tool measuring emotional intelligence at the beginning of their employment with the company. After four months, their volume of sales was calculated and compared with other results. Briefly, evidence from this study indicates that emotional intelligence skills are relevant in association with job performance, particularly relationship management and self-management. The final results support the main hypothesis. Subsequent implications for sales organizations and researchers are discussed

    Simulation of Hybrid Edge Computing Architectures

    Dealing with a growing amount of data is a crucial challenge for the future of information and communication technologies. More and more devices are expected to transfer data through the Internet, therefore new solutions have to be designed in order to guarantee low latency and efficient traffic management. In this paper, we propose a solution that combines the edge computing paradigm with a decentralized communication approach based on Peer-to-Peer (P2P). According to the proposed scheme, participants to the system are employed to relay messages of other devices, so as to reach a destination (usually a server at the edge of the network) even in absence of an Internet connection. This approach can be useful in dynamic and crowded environments, allowing the system to outsource part of the traffic management from the Cloud servers to end-devices. To evaluate our proposal, we carry out some experiments with the help of LUNES, an open source discrete events simulator specifically designed for distributed environments. In our simulations, we tested several system configurations in order to understand the impact of the algorithms involved in the data dissemination and some possible network arrangement
