Agency Theory Approach For The Performance Of Returnee Entrepreneurs

A returnee entrepreneur playing an important role in China market is a notable phenomenon. While their advanced knowledge and overseas networking in developed countries have advantages over local counterparts, their lack of local knowledge and connection may mitigate their advantages. This study explores the research questions how and why external management control of returnee entrepreneur is inferior to local counterpart. Based on the data collected in year 2002 from Chinese technology venture companies in Zhongguancun Science Park (ZSP), we find that the performance of returnee entrepreneur’s firms is lower when they have more local subsidiaries and when they are owned by foreigners. It implies that returnee entrepreneurs may be less effective in management control over local subsidiaries which may indicate a low level of headquarters control. It also implies that foreign ownership gives rise to increase in agency conflicts between returnee entrepreneurs and foreign investors and thus has a negative impact on firms’ innovation performance. &nbsp

Numerical model of journal bearing lubrication considering a bending stiffness effect

An analysis for operating characteristics of journal bearing lubrication system is performed based on the numerical model. Dynamic bearing lubrication characteristics such as oil film pressure and thickness distribution can be analyzed through a numerical model with an integration of elastohydrodynamics and multi-flexible-body dynamics (MFBD). In particular, the oil film thickness variation by elastic deformation is considered in the elastohydrodynamic analysis by applying the bending stiffness effect of journal. And the oil film thickness variation by the bending stiffness effect is applied to the fluid governing equations to calculate the oil film pressure in the elastohydrodynamic lubrication region. A series of process proposed in this study is available for the analysis of realistic elastohydrodynamic lubrication phenomenon. Also, a numerical example for the journal bearing lubrication system is demonstrated and compared with the experimental results. The numerical results considering the bending stiffness effect show a good agreement with the experimental results

Do Financial Analysts Facilitate Investors’ Assessment Of Earnings?: Evidence From The Korean Stock Market

This paper seeks to enhance our understanding of financial analysts in assisting market investors’ use of accounting earnings in the Korean stock market. We examine whether stock returns differentially reflect earnings information for firms with analyst coverage. We propose that the role of analysts as external monitors as well as information intermediaries enhances the market investors’ valuation of earnings. We find that market valuation of earnings is higher for firms with analyst following. Furthermore, market investors’ valuation of earnings increases (or decreases) with the number of analysts (or with the dispersion of analysts’ forecasts). This suggests that the beneficial effect of analysts arises through the quantity and quality of analysts’ information. This study contributes to the literature by investigating the important role of analysts in emerging market

Impact of Emotional Harassment on Firm’s Value

The activities and consequences of workplace bullying and harassment have been widely explored in the literature but mainly studied within the scope of individuals or at the team level. Taking a holistic approach, we associate the concept of bullying with firm-level performance as well as stakeholders’ responses in the market. In this paper, we examine whether and how market investors react to the news of corporate harassment by top officials of publicly listed firms in Korea. Using a standard event study methodology and multiple regression analysis with matched sample, we find significantly negative stock price reactions to news of corporate bullying. We also find that the impact is more salient if emotional bullying is involved and discuss both the theoretical and practical implications of these findings

Mobile Phone Technology and Online Sexual Harassment among Juveniles in South Korea: Effects of Self-control and Social Learning

Mobile phones are increasingly developing into a technology-based device that everyone is dependent on. While previous research has been extensive in examining different theoretical explanations for interpreting juvenile delinquency, research on mobile induced online sexual harassment among juvenile populations have been rather scarce and limited. As a result of this dearth, the present study employs a theoretical approach in rationalizing why juveniles commit online sexual harassment using their mobile phones. Elements from both social learning and self-control theories are used to assess the causes for online sexual harassment using mobile phones. By conducting binomial logistic regression analyses, this study finds that both social learning and low self-control components are salient factors in determining the causes of juvenile sexual harassment in cyberspace. From these findings, policies will be introduced to address the major causes of juvenile online sexual harassment using mobile phones

Study on Moth Diversity in islands and land borders, in the southwest area of Korean Peninsula

AbstractIn order to investigate moth diversity in the bordering islands and inland in the southwest area of Korean Peninsula, a total of 1,127 individuals of 270 species from 214 genera, 16 families, 1 order were collected from four inland sites and four island sites near Mokpo, at the southern end of the Korean Peninsula from April to October of 2009. According to the analysis of the collected moths, Noctuidae with its 102 species were the most frequently collected order and followed by Geometridae and Pyralidae. Among the 5 regions studied every month (Yangeulsan (Mt.), Oedaldo, Yudalsan (Mt.), Ibamsan (Mt.), Seungdalsan (Mt.)), Mt. Seungdalsan showed the highest species diversity with 129 species from 452 moths collected, followed by decreasing order of Yangeulsan at 70 species from 139 moths, Ibamsan at 59 species from 116 moths, Oedaldo at 58 species from 133 moths and Yudalsan of 48 species from 125 moths. In the three regions in which samples were taken once, Dalido showed the highest figure at 49 species from 98 moths collected, followed by Gohado at 23 species from 37 moths and Heosado at 14 species from 27 moths
