Nanopillar Arrays on Semiconductor Membranes as Electron Emission Amplifiers
A new transmission-type electron multiplier was fabricated from
silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material by integrating an array of one dimensional
(1D) silicon nanopillars onto a two dimensional (2D) silicon membrane. Primary
electrons are injected into the nanopillar-membrane system from the flat
surface of the membrane, while electron emission from the other side is probed
by an anode. The secondary electron yield (SEY) from nanopillars is found to be
about 1.8 times that of plane silicon membrane. This gain in electron number is
slightly enhanced by the electric field applied from the anode. Further
optimization of the dimensions of nanopillars and membrane and application of
field emission promise an even higher gain for detector applications and allow
for probing of electronic/mechanical excitations in nanopillar-membrane system
excited by incident particles or radiation.Comment: 4 figure
Charge states and magnetic ordering in LaMnO3/SrTiO3 superlattices
We investigated the magnetic and optical properties of
[(LaMnO3)n/(SrTiO3)8]20 (n = 1, 2, and 8) superlattices grown by pulsed laser
deposition. We found a weak ferromagnetic and semiconducting state developed in
all superlattices. An analysis of the optical conductivity showed that the
LaMnO3 layers in the superlattices were slightly doped. The amount of doping
was almost identical regardless of the LaMnO3 layer thickness up to eight unit
cells, suggesting that the effect is not limited to the interface. On the other
hand, the magnetic ordering became less stable as the LaMnO3 layer thickness
decreased, probably due to a dimensional effect.Comment: 17 pages including 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Generation of mechanical squeezing via magnetic dipoles on cantilevers
A scheme to squeeze the center-of-mass motional quadratures of a quantum
mechanical oscillator below its standard quantum limit is proposed and analyzed
theoretically. It relies on the dipole-dipole coupling between a magnetic
dipole mounted on the tip of a cantilever to equally oriented dipoles located
on a mesoscopic tuning fork. We also investigate the influence of several
sources of noise on the achievable squeezing, including classical noise in the
driving fork and the clamping noise in the oscillator. A detection of the state
of the cantilever based on state transfer to a light field is considered. We
investigate possible limitations of that scheme.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, submitted to PR
Traversable Wormholes Construction in 2+1 Dimensions
We study traversable Lorentzian wormholes in the three-dimensional low energy
string theory by adding some matter source involving a dilaton field. It will
be shown that there are two-different types of wormhole solutions such as BTZ
and black string wormholes depending on the dilaton backgrounds, respectively.
We finally obtain the desirable solutions which confine exotic matter near the
throat of wormhole by adjusting NS charge.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, JHEP style, one reference adde
The natural alkaloid Jerantinine B has activity in acute myeloid leukemia cells through a mechanism involving c-Jun
© 2020 The Author(s). Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a heterogenous hematological malignancy with poor long-term survival. New drugs which improve the outcome of AML patients are urgently required. In this work, the activity and mechanism of action of the cytotoxic indole alkaloid Jerantinine B (JB), was examined in AML cells. Methods: We used a combination of proliferation and apoptosis assays to assess the effect of JB on AML cell lines and patient samples, with BH3 profiling being performed to identify early effects of the drug (4 h). Phosphokinase arrays were adopted to identify potential driver proteins in the cellular response to JB, the results of which were confirmed and extended using western blotting and inhibitor assays and measuring levels of reactive oxygen species. Results: AML cell growth was significantly impaired following JB exposure in a dose-dependent manner; potent colony inhibition of primary patient cells was also observed. An apoptotic mode of death was demonstrated using Annexin V and upregulation of apoptotic biomarkers (active caspase 3 and cleaved PARP). Using BH3 profiling, JB was shown to prime cells to apoptosis at an early time point (4 h) and phospho-kinase arrays demonstrated this to be associated with a strong upregulation and activation of both total and phosphorylated c-Jun (S63). The mechanism of c-Jun activation was probed and significant induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was demonstrated which resulted in an increase in the DNA damage response marker γH2AX. This was further verified by the loss of JB-induced C-Jun activation and maintenance of cell viability when using the ROS scavenger N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC). Conclusions: This work provides the first evidence of cytotoxicity of JB against AML cells and identifies ROS-induced c-Jun activation as the major mechanism of action
BPS Electromagnetic Waves on Giant Gravitons
We find new 1/8-BPS giant graviton solutions in , carrying
three angular momenta along , and investigate their properties.
Especially, we show that nonzero worldvolume gauge fields are admitted
preserving supersymmetry. These gauge field modes can be viewed as
electromagnetic waves along the compact D3 brane, whose Poynting vector
contributes to the BPS angular momenta. We also analyze the (nearly-)spherical
giant gravitons with worldvolume gauge fields in detail. Expressing the
in Hopf fibration ( fibred over ), the wave propagates along the
fiber.Comment: 25 pages, no figures, v2: references adde
Fluctuation Study of the Specific Heat of MgB2
The specific heat of polycrystalline MgB has been measured with
high resolution ac calorimetry from 5 to 45 K at constant magnetic fields. The
excess specific heat above T is discussed in terms of Gaussian
fluctuations and suggests that MgB is a bulk superconductor with
Ginzburg-Landau coherence length \AA . The transition-width
broadening in field is treated in terms of lowest-Landau-level (LLL)
fluctuations. That analysis requires that \AA . The underestimate
of the coherence length in field, along with deviations from 3D LLL
predictions, suggest that there is an influence from the anisotropy of B
between the c-axis and the a-b plane.Comment: Phys. Rev. B 66, 134515 (2002
1/16-BPS Black Holes and Giant Gravitons in the AdS_5 X S^5 Space
We explore 1/16-BPS objects of type IIB string theory in AdS_5 * S^5. First,
we consider supersymmetric AdS_5 black holes, which should be 1/16-BPS and have
a characteristic that not all physical charges are independent. We point out
that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of these black holes admits a remarkably
simple expression in terms of (dependent) physical charges, which suggests its
microscopic origin via certain Cardy or Hardy-Ramanujan formula. We also note
that there is an upper bound for the angular momenta given by the electric
charges. Second, we construct a class of 1/16-BPS giant graviton solutions in
AdS_5 * S^5 and explore their properties. The solutions are given by the
intersections of AdS_5 * S^5 and complex 3 dimensional holomorphic hyperspaces
in C^{1+5}, the latter being the zero loci of three holomorphic functions which
are homogeneous with suitable weights on coordinates. We investigate examples
of giant gravitons, including their degenerations to tensionless strings.Comment: 25 pages, no figures, v2: references added, comments added in the
