Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction and Spiral Order in Spin-orbit Coupled Optical Lattices
We show that the recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupling in
ultracold atomic gases can be used to study different types of spin spiral
order and resulting multiferroic effects. Spin-orbit coupling in optical
lattices can give rise to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) spin interaction which
is essential for spin spiral order. By taking into account spin-orbit coupling
and an external Zeeman field, we derive an effective spin model in the Mott
insulator regime at half filling and demonstrate that the DM interaction in
optical lattices can be made extremely strong with realistic experimental
parameters. The rich finite temperature phase diagrams of the effective spin
models for fermions and bosons are obtained via classical Monte Carlo

Circulating microRNAs in Pancreatic Juice as Candidate Biomarkers of Pancreatic Cancer
Development of sensitive and specific biomarkers, preferably those circulating in body fluids is critical for early diagnosis of cancer. This study performed profiling of microRNAs (miRNAs) in exocrine pancreatic secretions (pancreatic juice) by microarray analysis utilizing pancreatic juice from 6 pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients and two pooled samples from 6 non-pancreatic, non-healthy (NPNH) as controls. Differentially circulating miRNAs were subsequently validated in 88 pancreatic juice samples from 50 PDAC, 19 chronic pancreatitis (CP) patients and 19 NPNH controls. A marked difference in the profiles of four circulating miRNAs (miR-205, miR-210, miR-492, and miR-1427) was observed in pancreatic juice collected from patients with PDAC and those without pancreatic disease. Elevated levels of the four miRNAs together predicted PDAC with a specificity of 88% and sensitivity of 87%. Inclusion of serum CA19-9 level increased the sensitivity to 91% and the specificity to 100%. Enrichment of the four miRNAs in pancreatic juice was associated with decreased OS, as was the combination of miR-205 and miR-210. Higher contents of miR-205 and miR-210 were also associated with lymph node metastasis. Elevated levels of circulating miR-205, miR-210, miR-492, and miR-1247 in pancreatic juice are, therefore, promising candidate biomarkers of disease and poor prognosis in patients with PDAC
On stable higher spin states in Heterotic String Theories
We study properties of 1/2 BPS Higher Spin states in heterotic
compactifications with extended supersymmetry. We also analyze non BPS Higher
Spin states and give explicit expressions for physical vertex operators of the
first two massive levels. We then study on-shell tri-linear couplings of these
Higher Spin states and confirm that BPS states with arbitrary spin cannot decay
into lower spin states in perturbation theory. Finally, we consider scattering
of vector bosons off higher spin BPS states and extract form factors and
polarization effects in various limits.Comment: 38 page
High-Resolution Near-Infrared Polarimetry of a Circumstellar Disk around UX Tau A
We present H-band polarimetric imagery of UX Tau A taken with HiCIAO/AO188 on
the Subaru Telescope. UX Tau A has been classified as a pre-transitional disk
object, with a gap structure separating its inner and outer disks. Our imagery
taken with the 0.15 (21 AU) radius coronagraphic mask has revealed a strongly
polarized circumstellar disk surrounding UX Tau A which extends to 120 AU, at a
spatial resolution of 0.1 (14 AU). It is inclined by 46 \pm 2 degree as the
west side is nearest. Although SED modeling and sub-millimeter imagery
suggested the presence of a gap in the disk, with the inner edge of the outer
disk estimated to be located at 25 - 30 AU, we detect no evidence of a gap at
the limit of our inner working angle (23 AU) at the near-infrared wavelength.
We attribute the observed strong polarization (up to 66 %) to light scattering
by dust grains in the disk. However, neither polarization models of the
circumstellar disk based on Rayleigh scattering nor Mie scattering
approximations were consistent with the observed azimuthal profile of the
polarization degrees of the disk. Instead, a geometric optics model of the disk
with nonspherical grains with the radii of 30 micron meter is consistent with
the observed profile. We suggest that the dust grains have experienced frequent
collisional coagulations and have grown in the circumstellar disk of UX Tau A.Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, and 1 table. accepted to PAS

ERK1/2 signaling dominates over RhoA signaling in regulating early changes in RNA expression induced by endothelin-1 in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes
Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy is associated with changes in gene expression. Extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2) and RhoA [activated by hypertrophic agonists (e.g. endothelin-1)] regulate gene expression and are implicated in the response, but their relative significance in regulating the cardiomyocyte transcriptome is unknown. Our aim was to establish the significance of ERK1/2 and/or RhoA in the early cardiomyocyte transcriptomic response to endothelin-1.Cardiomyocytes were exposed to endothelin-1 (1 h) with/without PD184352 (to inhibit ERK1/2) or C3 transferase (C3T, to inhibit RhoA). RNA expression was analyzed using microarrays and qPCR. ERK1/2 signaling positively regulated approximately 65% of the early gene expression response to ET-1 with a small (approximately 2%) negative effect, whereas RhoA signaling positively regulated approximately 10% of the early gene expression response to ET-1 with a greater (approximately 14%) negative contribution. Of RNAs non-responsive to endothelin-1, 66 or 448 were regulated by PD184352 or C3T, respectively, indicating that RhoA had a more significant effect on baseline RNA expression. mRNAs upregulated by endothelin-1 encoded a number of receptor ligands (e.g. Ereg, Areg, Hbegf) and transcription factors (e.g. Abra/Srf) that potentially propagate the response.ERK1/2 dominates over RhoA in the early transcriptomic response to endothelin-1. RhoA plays a major role in maintaining baseline RNA expression but, with upregulation of Abra/Srf by endothelin-1, RhoA may regulate changes in RNA expression over longer times. Our data identify ERK1/2 as a more significant node than RhoA in regulating the early stages of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy
A simulation study on the measurement of D0-D0bar mixing parameter y at BES-III
We established a method on measuring the \dzdzb mixing parameter for
BESIII experiment at the BEPCII collider. In this method, the doubly
tagged events, with one decays to
CP-eigenstates and the other decays semileptonically, are used to
reconstruct the signals. Since this analysis requires good separation,
a likelihood approach, which combines the , time of flight and the
electromagnetic shower detectors information, is used for particle
identification. We estimate the sensitivity of the measurement of to be
0.007 based on a fully simulated MC sample.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figure
Moduli Spaces of Cold Holographic Matter
We use holography to study (3+1)-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills
theory with gauge group SU(Nc), in the large-Nc and large-coupling limits,
coupled to a single massless (n+1)-dimensional hypermultiplet in the
fundamental representation of SU(Nc), with n=3,2,1. In particular, we study
zero-temperature states with a nonzero baryon number charge density, which we
call holographic matter. We demonstrate that a moduli space of such states
exists in these theories, specifically a Higgs branch parameterized by the
expectation values of scalar operators bilinear in the hypermultiplet scalars.
At a generic point on the Higgs branch, the R-symmetry and gauge group are
spontaneously broken to subgroups. Our holographic calculation consists of
introducing a single probe Dp-brane into AdS5 times S^5, with p=2n+1=7,5,3,
introducing an electric flux of the Dp-brane worldvolume U(1) gauge field, and
then obtaining explicit solutions for the worldvolume fields dual to the scalar
operators that parameterize the Higgs branch. In all three cases, we can
express these solutions as non-singular self-dual U(1) instantons in a
four-dimensional space with a metric determined by the electric flux. We
speculate on the possibility that the existence of Higgs branches may point the
way to a counting of the microstates producing a nonzero entropy in holographic
matter. Additionally, we speculate on the possible classification of
zero-temperature, nonzero-density states described holographically by probe

A holographic model for the fractional quantum Hall effect
Experimental data for fractional quantum Hall systems can to a large extent
be explained by assuming the existence of a modular symmetry group commuting
with the renormalization group flow and hence mapping different phases of
two-dimensional electron gases into each other. Based on this insight, we
construct a phenomenological holographic model which captures many features of
the fractional quantum Hall effect. Using an SL(2,Z)-invariant
Einstein-Maxwell-axio-dilaton theory capturing the important modular
transformation properties of quantum Hall physics, we find dyonic diatonic
black hole solutions which are gapped and have a Hall conductivity equal to the
filling fraction, as expected for quantum Hall states. We also provide several
technical results on the general behavior of the gauge field fluctuations
around these dyonic dilatonic black hole solutions: We specify a sufficient
criterion for IR normalizability of the fluctuations, demonstrate the
preservation of the gap under the SL(2,Z) action, and prove that the
singularity of the fluctuation problem in the presence of a magnetic field is
an accessory singularity. We finish with a preliminary investigation of the
possible IR scaling solutions of our model and some speculations on how they
