Effect of methionine sulfoximine on methylation of guanine residues in astroglial transfer ribonucleic acids
Culture-grown astrocytes derived from 3-day-old rat brain were incubated in the presence of [ 3 H]guanosine and of the convulsant agent l -methionine- dl -sulfoximine (MSO). The resulting [ 3 H]tRNA was purified from control and MSO-exposed cells at several time points during the incubation and was hydrolyzed to [ 3 H]guanine and four [ 3 H]methyl guanines which were separated by high pressure liquid chromatography. Three of the four [ 3 H]methyl guanines were more highly labeled in the [ 3 H]tRNA of the MSO-exposed cells, relative to that of the control cells throughout the entire incubation period. The findings extend to cultured astrocytes, the stimulatory effect of MSO on the methylation of neural tRNA guanines, previouly observed both in vitro using [ 14 C] S -adenosyl- l -methionine and in vivo using [ methyl 3 -H] l -methionine.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45427/1/11064_2004_Article_BF00964832.pd
Current management of the gastrointestinal complications of systemic sclerosis.
Systemic sclerosis is a multisystem autoimmune disorder that involves the gastrointestinal tract in more than 90% of patients. This involvement can extend from the mouth to the anus, with the oesophagus and anorectum most frequently affected. Gut complications result in a plethora of presentations that impair oral intake and faecal continence and, consequently, have an adverse effect on patient quality of life, resulting in referral to gastroenterologists. The cornerstones of gastrointestinal symptom management are to optimize symptom relief and monitor for complications, in particular anaemia and malabsorption. Early intervention in patients who develop these complications is critical to minimize disease progression and improve prognosis. In the future, enhanced therapeutic strategies should be developed, based on an ever-improving understanding of the intestinal pathophysiology of systemic sclerosis. This Review describes the most commonly occurring clinical scenarios of gastrointestinal involvement in patients with systemic sclerosis as they present to the gastroenterologist, with recommendations for the suggested assessment protocol and therapy in each situation

Synthesis, characterization and comparative study of thiophene- benzothiadiazole based donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) materials
The synthesis and characterization of solution processable donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) based conjugated molecules with varying ratios of thiophene as donor (D) and benzothiadiazole as acceptor (A) are reported. Optical, electrochemical, thermal, morphological and organic thin film transistor (OTFT) device properties of these materials were investigated. The thermal and polarized optical microscope analysis indicates that the materials having higher D/A ratios exhibit both liquid crystalline (LC) and OTFT behavior. AFM analysis of the materials having D/A ratios of 3 and 4 (3T1B and 4T1B) show well ordered structures, resulting from strong π-π interchain interactions compared to the other molecules in this study. A XRD patterns for 3T1B and 4T1B thin films also shows high crystalline ordering. Solution processed OTFTs of 3T1B and 4T1B have shown un-optimized charge carrier mobilities of 2 × 10 -2 cm 2 V -1 s -1 and 4 × 10 -3 cm 2 V -1 s -1, respectively on bare Si/SiO 2 substrate
