    Ground Waves Generated by Pile Driving, and Structural Interaction

    Pre-formed steel or concrete pile elements are installed by high energy impact or vibro-driver, which causes outgoing ground waves. In severe cases, adjacent buildings are at risk of damage. Assessment of risk is conventionally by reference to threshold limits of vibration. The global approach considers neither the interactive effects between ground and structure, nor frequency and duration. Here, firstly, the dynamics of a pile head impact and of the transmission of a portion of the energy into the ground were modelled by a combination of finite elements (FE), springs and dashpots. The boundary disturbances were then applied to a second model of the soil as an elastic half space. This outer model was constructed of axisymmetric finite and infinite elements for calibration against on-site measurements. The infinite elements (IE) represented a wider zone, and avoided spurious wave reflections at boundaries. Next, the verified ground disturbances adjacent to the pile were used as input to a three-dimensional FE/IE wedge-shaped model of a ‘slice’ of the axisymmetric system. Various structural forms, of steel frame structures and of brick walls, were added, giving a dynamic soil-structure analysis.     Comparison of the RNA-amplification based methods RT–PCR and NASBA for the detection of circulating tumour cells

    Increasingly, reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT–PCR) is used to detect clinically significant tumour cells in blood or bone marrow. This may result in a redefinition of disease-free and clinical relapse. However, its clinical utility may be limited by lack of automation or reproducibility. Recent studies have suggested nucleic acid sequence-based amplification of target RNA may be more robust. In this study, nucleic acid sequence-based amplification was established to detect melanoma, colorectal and prostate cancer cells. Nucleic acid sequence-based amplification and RT–PCR both successfully amplified target RNA in peripheral blood samples from patients with melanoma and colorectal cancer, but only RT–PCR detected PSA in blood samples from patients with prostate cancer. There was relatively good agreement between sample replicates analyzed by RT–PCR (Kappa values of one for tyrosinase, 0.67 for CK-20 and one for PSA), but less agreement when analyzed by nucleic acid sequence-based amplification. This may limit the routine use of NASBA for the detection of clinically significant disease. In summary, RT–PCR appears at present to be the most reliable and reproducible method for the detection of low-level disease in cancer patients, although prospective studies are warranted to assess the clinical utility of different molecular diagnostic methods

    Next generation software environments : principles, problems, and research directions

    The past decade has seen a burgeoning of research and development in software environments. Conferences have been devoted to the topic of practical environments, journal papers produced, and commercial systems sold. Given all the activity, one might expect a great deal of consensus on issues, approaches, and techniques. This is not the case, however. Indeed, the term "environment" is still used in a variety of conflicting ways. Nevertheless substantial progress has been made and we are at least nearing consensus on many critical issues.The purpose of this paper is to characterize environments, describe several important principles that have emerged in the last decade or so, note current open problems, and describe some approaches to these problems, with particular emphasis on the activities of one large-scale research program, the Arcadia project. Consideration is also given to two related topics: empirical evaluation and technology transition. That is, how can environments and their constituents be evaluated, and how can new developments be moved effectively into the production sector

    Petroleum generation timing and source in the Northern Longmen Shan Thrust Belt, Southwest China: Implications for multiple oil generation episodes and sources

    The temporal evolution of hydrocarbons (∌500 million bbl) and its relationship to the orogenic events of the Longmen Shan thrust belt have been extensively debated. The hydrocarbons occur as solid bitumen, as dykes and/or coatings within/along faults/fractures, and as present-day oil seeps. Here, utilizing organic geochemistry, we demonstrate that all of the bitumen exhibit similar organo-geochemical characteristics, and were sourced from the upper Neoproterozoic–lower Cambrian Doushantuo and Qiongzhusi Formations. In contrast, the organic geochemistry of the present-day oil seeps are distinct from that of the bitumen, and suggest that the source is the Permian Dalong Formation. Bitumen Re-Os data indicate that the upper Neoproterozoic–lower Cambrian Doushantuo and Qiongzhusi Formations underwent two temporally distinct oil-generation events; initial oil generation occurred during the Late Cambrian/Early Ordovician prior to the Caledonian orogeny, and secondly during the Jurassic (∌165 Ma) coinciding with the Indosinian-Yanshan orogenies. In contrast, the Re-Os data of the present-day oil seeps are too similar to yield a meaningful age, although the source is considered to have undergone hydrocarbon maturation between the Triassic and Jurassic. The temporal hydrocarbon evolution in the Longmen Shan thrust belt also provides an understanding of the hydrocarbon evolution and future exploration of the adjacent petroliferous Sichuan Basin

    Structure and properties of small sodium clusters

    We have investigated structure and properties of small metal clusters using all-electron ab initio theoretical methods based on the Hartree-Fock approximation and density functional theory, perturbation theory and compared results of our calculations with the available experimental data and the results of other theoretical works. We have systematically calculated the optimized geometries of neutral and singly charged sodium clusters having up to 20 atoms, their multipole moments (dipole and quadrupole), static polarizabilities, binding energies per atom, ionization potentials and frequencies of normal vibration modes. Our calculations demonstrate the great role of many-electron correlations in the formation of electronic and ionic structure of small metal clusters and form a good basis for further detailed study of their dynamic properties, as well as structure and properties of other atomic cluster systems.Comment: 47 pages, 16 figure

    Ten-year changes in colorectal cancer screening in Switzerland: The Swiss Health Interview Survey 2007, 2012 and 2017

    Recent recommendations for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening suggest fecal occult blood test (FOBT) or colonoscopy. Since 2013, mandatory health insurance in Switzerland reimburse CRC screening. We set out to determine if CRC testing rate and type of CRC screening changed in Switzerland from 2007 to 2017 and between the three main language regions. We extracted data on 50–75-year-olds from the Swiss Health Interview Survey (SHIS) 2007, 2012 and 2017 to determine rates of self-reported testing with FOBT within last 2 years and colonoscopy within last 10 years. We estimated prevalence ratio (PR) in multivariate-adjusted logistic regression models and compared rates in German-, French- and Italian-speaking regions, adjusting for sociodemographic, self-rated health and insurance variables. Overall testing rates (FOBT or colonoscopy) increased in all regions from 2007 to 2017 (German-speaking 33.6% to 48.3%; French-speaking 30.8% to 48.8%; Italian-speaking 37.9% to 46.8%), mainly because of an increase in colonoscopy rate for screening reasons (p < 0.001 in all regions). Rates of FOBT testing fell significantly in the German-speaking region (11.9% to 4.4%, p < 0.001), but not in the Italian- (13.9% to 8.5%, p = 0.052) and French-speaking regions (7.6% to 7.4%, p = 0.138). Overall CRC testing rate rose from 33.2% in 2007 to 48.4% in 2017, mainly because of an increase of colonoscopy rate for screening reasons. Coverage remains below the 65% target of European guidelines. Organized screening programs encouraging FOBT screening could contribute to further increasing the CRC testing rate

    Change in colorectal cancer (CRC) testing rates associated with the introduction of the first organized screening program in canton Uri, Switzerland: Evidence from insurance claims data analyses from 2010 to 2018

    The first canton in Switzerland to implement an organized colorectal cancer screening program (OSP) was Uri. Starting in 2013, it offered 50–69-year-olds free testing with colonoscopy every 10 years or fecal occult blood test (FOBT) every 2 years. We tested the association between the OSP and testing rates over time. We analyzed claims data of 50–69-year-olds from Uri and neighboring cantons (NB) provided by a large health insurance and complemented it with data from the OSP. We fitted multivariate adjusted logistic regression models to compare overall testing rates and by method (colonoscopy or FOBT/both) We computed the 2018 rate of the population up-to-date with testing (colonoscopy within 9 years/FOBT within 2 years). Yearly overall testing rates in Uri increased from 8.7% in 2010 to 10.8% in 2018 and from 6.5% to 7.9% in NB. In Uri, the proportion tested with FOBT/both increased from 4.7% to 6.0% but decreased from 2.8% to 1.1% in NB. Testing by FOBT/both increased more between 2015 and 2018 than 2010–2012 in Uri than in NB (OR:2.1[95%CI:1.8–2.4]), it increased less for colonoscopy (OR:0.60[95%CI:0.51–0.70]), with no change in overall CRC testing (OR:0.91[95%CI:0.81–1.02]). In 2018 in Uri, 42.5% were up-to-date with testing (FOBT/both:9.2%, colonoscopy:35.7%); in NBs, 40.7% (FOBT/both:2.7%, colonoscopy:39%). Yearly FOBT rates in Uri were always higher than in NB. Though the OSP in Uri was not associated with a greater increase in overall testing rates, the OSP was associated with increased FOBT
