MACROSTRUCTURES AND RHETORICAL MOVES IN COMPUTER ENGINEERING RESEARCH ARTICLES

    Get PDF
Genre analysis has offered us valuable insights into the rhetorical organization of different genres. Regarding the research article (RA) genre in engineering, previous move-based works have shown that disciplinary variation is evident, especially across computer engineering (CE) sub-disciplines which often showcase unique rhetorical structures and patterns due to the newness of the field. Using Swalesā€™ seminal move analysis approach (1990) this paper presents a synthesis of move-based works that have explored RA textual structures in CE sub-disciplines. The discipline-specific A-IMRD move/step frameworks and patterns presented in this paper can form the foundation of research-based English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pedagogies and teaching materials tailored to the needs of CE students in academic writing courses.Ā  Article visualizations

INVESTIGATING THE BARRIERS TO USING ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES IN GREEK SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASSROOMS: EFL TEACHERSā€™ PERSPECTIVES

    Get PDF
Empirical findings from different special education contexts worldwide suggest that special education teachers use technologies less than their general education counterparts. The reasons however special educators utilize technology less, remain blurred. This qualitative interview-based study aims to fill this gap and investigate why EFL teachers tend to avoid or neglect assistive technologies in state special education schools in Greece. Thematic analysis was employed to explore the teacher, school, and student-related barriers based on the perceptions of six EFL teachers in special education settings. Findings indicate that the lack of resources, training, technology leadership, time, EFL teachersā€™ emotional struggles and marginalization as well as studentsā€™ poor digital skills and disadvantaged backgrounds constitute the main barriers to using technology in special education classrooms. Additionally, data analysis revealed that EFL teachers are fully aware of the value of using assistive technologies for learning and teaching. The article concludes by putting forward several macro and micro-level recommendations for facilitating assistive technology use in special education schools in Greece.Ā  Article visualizations

SCHOOL LEADERSā€™ PERCEPTIONS ON BARRIERS FOR CREATING INCLUSIVE INTERCULTURAL ENVIRONMENTS AND POTENTIAL GENERATIVE AI BENEFITS

    Get PDF
Greek schools have been progressively challenged by the diversification of student demographics during the past decade. The European refugee crisis after 2015 has triggered immense needs to create inclusive intercultural school environments for disabled students whose first language and cultural backgrounds differ from the dominant Greek middle-class students in mainstream schools. School leaders play a vital role in creating inclusive schĪæols that respect race, culture, ability, class, family background, and linguistic diversity. Social justice leadership constitutes an integral part of inclusive intercultural education, yet works exploring school leadersā€™ struggles in engaging in this type of leadership in Greece are scarce. This work gives voice to women educational leaders in Greece and investigates the barriers they encounter in providing appropriate education to migrant students with disabilities. Moreover, it explores school leadersā€™ perceptions of how generative AI applications can potentially be used to minimize these barriers.Ā  Article visualizations

ONLINE LEARNING AND INVISIBLE DISABILITY: EXPLORING GREEK EFL STUDENTSā€™ EXPERIENCES

    Get PDF
The bulk of research on students with learning disabilities during university has focused on face-to-face mode on campus. Less is known regarding the learning experiences of these students online. This qualitative work aims to explore the online educational experiences among Greek undergraduate EFL students with learning disabilities and/or ADHD during the Covid-19 shutdown. Data were collected via in-depth interviews with seven undergraduate students with LD and/or ADHD from two different higher education institutions in Greece. Interviews focused on the difficulties participants encountered during the three online academic semesters in 2020-2021. Data were analysed using IPA. Findings revealed students encountered severe difficulties that hindered their academic progress both in EFL and in core subject courses but there also were affordances that facilitated their learning. FOSTERING INTERCULTURAL AWARENESS IN ONLINE EAP CLASSROOMS USING THE REALIST SOAP OPERA GENRE

    Get PDF
This qualitative work attempts to investigate the viability of using the British realist soap genre as an authentic cultural resource for raising the intercultural awareness of Greek EFL university students about social issues relevant to their age. Five students participated in this study. Participants watched thirteen online episodes of the British realist soap EastEnders for one academic semester within their EAP courses and completed weekly reflective tasks based on the storylines of each episode. Data were gathered from semi-structured interviews. The findings garnered suggest that British realist soap operas could be exploited in order to foster intercultural awareness processes of Greek EFL university students. This small-scale study highlights the need for further research in the field of intercultural awareness within the EAP context. Additionally, it is proposed that EFL teachers in Greece and elsewhere invest more in intercultural training and use authentic materials more often in the EAP classroom.Ā  Article visualizations

Evolution of Multipolar Magnetic Fields in Isolated Neutron Stars and its effect on Pulsar Radio Emission

    Get PDF
The evolution of the multipolar structure of the magnetic field of isolated neutron stars is studied assuming the currents to be confined to the crust. Lower orders (ā‰¤25\le 25) of multipole are seen to evolve in a manner similar to the dipole suggesting little or no evolution of the expected pulse shape. We also study the multifrequency polarization position angle traverse of PSR B0329+54 and find a significant frequency dependence above 2.7 GHz. We interpret this as an evidence of strong multipolar magnetic field present in the radio emission region.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, uses newpasp.sty, to appear in ASP Conf.
