    Bibliothèques municipales et bibliothèque administrative

    Get PDF

Letter from Seine Bolks to Karel de Moen

A letter of the Rev. Seine Bolks to the Rev. Karel de Moen, explaining why he and his people decided to settle in the Holland Colony. His letter is not as extensive as Vander Meulen\u27s and Van Raalte\u27s, but is important nevertheless.https://digitalcommons.hope.edu/vrp_1840s/1211/thumbnail.jp

Stark effect in a wedge-shaped quantum box

The effect of an external applied electric field on the electronic ground state energy of a quantum box with a geometry defined by a wedge is studied by carrying out a variational calculation. This geometry could be used as an approximation for a tip of a cantilever of an atomic force microscope. We study theoretically the Stark effect as function of the parameters of the wedge: its diameter, angular aperture and thickness; as well as function of the intensity of the external electric field applied along the axis of the wedge in both directions; pushing the carrier towards the wider or the narrower parts. A confining electronic effect, which is sharper as the wedge dimensions are smaller, is clearly observed for the first case. Besides, the sign of the Stark shift changes when the angular aperture is changed from small angles to angles theta>pi. For the opposite field, the electronic confinement for large diameters is very small and it is also observed that the Stark shift is almost independent with respect to the angular aperture.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, 1 tabl

Iodine-Loaded Calcium Titanate for Bone Repair with Sustainable Antibacterial Activity Prepared by Solution and Heat Treatment

In the orthopedic and dental fields, simultaneously conferring titanium (Ti) and its alloy implants with antibacterial and bone-bonding capabilities is an outstanding challenge. In the present study, we developed a novel combined solution and heat treatment that controllably incorporates 0.7% to 10.5% of iodine into Ti and its alloys by ion exchange with calcium ions in a bioactive calcium titanate. The treated metals formed iodine-containing calcium-deficient calcium titanate with abundant Ti-OH groups on their surfaces. High-resolution XPS analysis revealed that the incorporated iodine ions were mainly positively charged. The surface treatment also induced a shift in the isoelectric point toward a higher pH, which indicated a prevalence of basic surface functionalities. The Ti loaded with 8.6% iodine slowly released 5.6 ppm of iodine over 90 days and exhibited strong antibacterial activity (reduction rate >99%) against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), S. aureus, Escherichia coli, and S. epidermidis. A long-term stability test of the antibacterial activity on MRSA showed that the treated Ti maintained a >99% reduction until 3 months, and then it gradually decreased after 6 months (to a 97.3% reduction). There was no cytotoxicity in MC3T3-E1 or L929 cells, whereas apatite formed on the treated metal in a simulated body fluid within 3 days. It is expected that the iodine-carrying Ti and its alloys will be particularly useful for orthopedic and dental implants since they reliably bond to bone and prevent infection owing to their apatite formation, cytocompatibility, and sustainable antibacterial activity

Structure of the {001} talc surface as seen by atomic force microscopy: Comparison with X-ray and electron diffraction results

In this study the surface structure of a centimetre sized crystal of talc from the Trimouns deposit (Ariège, France) was imaged by atomic force microscopy. The direct image shows detailed characteristics of clay tetrahedral surfaces. The unit-cell dimensions obtained 30 using atomic force microscopy (aor = 5.47±0.28 and bor = 9.48±0.28 Å) are found to be slightly higher, with an increased uncertainty, than those obtained using X-ray diffraction (aor = 5.288±0.007 and bor = 9.159±0.010 Å) and selected-area electron diffraction (aor = 5.32±0.03 and bor = 9.22±0.05 Å). Talc has a quasi-ideal surface, clean of strong 34 structural distortion as compared to most of other clay minerals and unlikely surface 35 relaxation. The observation on the obtained image of apparent cell dimension enlargement is 36 then more likely attributed to instrumental artefacts, also responsible for scattered values of unit-cell parameters rather than related to any surface structural features

In cellulo serial crystallography of alcohol oxidase crystals inside yeast cells

The possibility of using femtosecond pulses from an X-ray free-electron laser to collect diffraction data from protein crystals formed in their native cellular organelle has been explored. X-ray diffraction of submicrometre-sized alcohol oxidase crystals formed in peroxisomes within cells of genetically modified variants of the methylotrophic yeast Hansenula polymorpha is reported and characterized. The observations are supported by synchrotron radiation-based powder diffraction data and electron microscopy. Based on these findings, the concept of in cellulo serial crystallography on protein targets imported into yeast peroxisomes without the need for protein purification as a requirement for subsequent crystallization is outlined
