    An investigation of corner separation within a thrust augmenter having Coanda jets

    The development of separation in corners of thrust augmentor wings having Coanda jets was investigated using hot film surface sensors and pressure transducers. Separation on the test augmentor began at a corner very close to the augmentor exit and then rapidly proceeded upstream. Measurements of the pressure fields in the corner region indicated that a modified form of the Stratford criterion could be used to predict the onset of separation. Testing was conducted over a range of nozzle pressure ratios, aspect ratios, diffuser angles, and designs of the boundary layer and Coanda nozzles

    On the Fredholm property of bisingular pseudodifferential operators

    For operators belonging either to a class of global bisingular pseudodifferential operators on Rm×RnR^m \times R^n or to a class of bisingular pseudodifferential operators on a product M×NM \times N of two closed smooth manifolds, we show the equivalence of their ellipticity (defined by the invertibility of certain associated homogeneous principal symbols) and their Fredholm mapping property in associated scales of Sobolev spaces.     Correlating the nanostructure of Al-oxide with deposition conditions and dielectric contributions of two-level systems in perspective of superconducting quantum circuits

    This work is concerned with Al/Al-oxide(AlOx_{x})/Al-layer systems which are important for Josephson-junction-based superconducting devices such as quantum bits. The device performance is limited by noise, which has been to a large degree assigned to the presence and properties of two-level tunneling systems in the amorphous AlOx_{x} tunnel barrier. The study is focused on the correlation of the fabrication conditions, nanostructural and nanochemical properties and the occurrence of two-level tunneling systems with particular emphasis on the AlOx_{x}-layer. Electron-beam evaporation with two different processes and sputter deposition were used for structure fabrication, and the effect of illumination by ultraviolet light during Al-oxide formation is elucidated. Characterization was performed by analytical transmission electron microscopy and low-temperature dielectric measurements. We show that the fabrication conditions have a strong impact on the nanostructural and nanochemical properties of the layer systems and the properties of two-level tunneling systems. Based on the understanding of the observed structural characteristics, routes are derived towards the fabrication of Al/AlOx_{x}/Al-layers systems with improved properties.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figure

    Gauged O(n) spin models in one dimension

    We consider a gauged O(n) spin model, n >= 2, in one dimension which contains both the pure O(n) and RP(n-1) models and which interpolates between them. We show that this model is equivalent to the non-interacting sum of the O(n) and Ising models. We derive the mass spectrum that scales in the continuum limit, and demonstrate that there are two universality classes, one of which contains the O(n) and RP(n-1) models and the other which has a tuneable parameter but which is degenerate in the sense that it arises from the direct sum of the O(n) and Ising models.Comment: 9 pages, no figures, LaTeX sourc

    Involution and Constrained Dynamics I: The Dirac Approach

    We study the theory of systems with constraints from the point of view of the formal theory of partial differential equations. For finite-dimensional systems we show that the Dirac algorithm completes the equations of motion to an involutive system. We discuss the implications of this identification for field theories and argue that the involution analysis is more general and flexible than the Dirac approach.     On the relevance of large scale pulsed-laser deposition: Evidence of structural heterogeneities in ZnO thin films

    Pulsed-laser deposition is known as a well-suited method for growing thin films of oxide compounds presenting a wide range of functional properties. A limitation of this method for industrial process is the very anisotropic expansion dynamics of the plasma plume, which induces difficulties to grow on large scale films with homogeneous thickness and composition. The specific aspect of the crystalline or orientation uniformity has not been investigated, despite its important role on oxide films properties. In this work, the crystalline parameters and the texture of zinc oxide films are studied as a function of position with respect to the central axis of the plasma plume. We demonstrate the existence of large non-uniformities in the films. The stoichiometry, the lattice parameter, and the distribution of crystallites orientations drastically depend on the position with respect to the plume axis, i.e., on the oblique incidence of the ablated species. The origin of these non-uniformities, in particular, the unexpected tilted orientation of the ZnO c-axis may be attributed to the combined effects of the oblique incidence and of the ratio between oxygen and zinc fluxes reaching the surface of the growing film

    A Model for QCD at High Density and Large Quark Mass

    We study the high density region of QCD within an effective model obtained in the frame of the hopping parameter expansion and choosing Polyakov type of loops as the main dynamical variables representing the fermionic matter. To get a first idea of the phase structure, the model is analyzed in strong coupling expansion and using a mean field approximation. In numerical simulations, the model still shows the so-called sign problem, a difficulty peculiar to non-zero chemical potential, but it permits the development of algorithms which ensure a good overlap of the Monte Carlo ensemble with the true one. We review the main features of the model and present calculations concerning the dependence of various observables on the chemical potential and on the temperature, in particular of the charge density and the diquark susceptibility, which may be used to characterize the various phases expected at high baryonic density. We obtain in this way information about the phase structure of the model and the corresponding phase transitions and cross over regions, which can be considered as hints for the behaviour of non-zero density QCD.Comment: 21 pages, 29 figure

    An evaluation of food as a potential source for clostridium difficile acquisition in hospitalized patients

    OBJECTIVETo determine whetherClostridium difficileis present in the food of hospitalized patients and to estimate the risk of subsequent colonization associated withC. difficilein food.METHODSThis was a prospective cohort study of inpatients at a university-affiliated tertiary care center, May 9, 2011–July 12, 2012. Enrolled patients submitted a portion of food from each meal. Patient stool specimens and/or rectal swabs were collected at enrollment, every 3 days thereafter, and at discharge, and were cultured forC. difficile. Clinical data were reviewed for evidence of infection due toC. difficile.A stochastic, discrete event model was developed to predict exposure toC. difficilefrom food, and the estimated number of new colonization events from food exposures per 1,000 admissions was determined.RESULTSA total of 149 patients were enrolled and 910 food specimens were obtained. Two food specimens from 2 patients were positive forC. difficile(0.2% of food samples; 1.3% of patients). Neither of the 2 patients was colonized at baseline withC. difficile. Discharge colonization status was available for 1 of the 2 patients and was negative. Neither was diagnosed withC. difficileinfection while hospitalized or during the year before or after study enrollment. Stochastic modeling indicated contaminated hospital food would be responsible for less than 1 newly colonized patient per 1,000 hospital admissions.CONCLUSIONSThe recovery ofC. difficilefrom the food of hospitalized patients was rare.
