    A Case for Implementing an Electronic Document Managament System (EDMS)

    We live in a world where documentation and record keeping are considered not only necessary but also essential. This documentation produces and unprecedented amount of paperwork. Keeping track of this volume of paper is a task of monumental proportions. Faced with this task, I sought to sell the idea of an Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) to the senior staff of the governmental agency that employs me. Participation in the Creative Critical Thinking Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston, has afforded me the opportunity to formulate an implementation scheme to accomplish this. Included in my synthesis project are the documented advantages and disadvantages of using an EDMS. These findings consist of explanations of what has been done in the agency so far and how further development would help the agency in the future. EDMS can enhance the agency’s ability to achieve greater value in its business practices and processes. A review of case studies provides comparative insight into possible problems that could and are encountered in implementation of an EDMS within an organization. Problems such as staff fear of the unknown and resistance to change group process along with communication breakdown. This is where CCT processes of problem solving using dialogue, group communication enhancement/involvement, and other thinking skills come into play. I identify the key components I would employ to change the existing work culture, set up training programs and enhance the aspects of team effort that will contribute to my successful implementation plan. This synthesis has provided an opportunity for me to form a collective documented approach with accumulated knowledge and schema for a successful implementation plan. This paper concludes with my reflective perspective on lessons learned, new problems identified, hopes for future development and personal educational aspirations

    Variability in oxidative degradation of charcoal: influence of production variables and environmental exposure

    <p>Charcoal is a key component of the Black Carbon (BC) continuum, where BC is characterized as a recalcitrant, fire-derived, polyaromatic material. Charcoal is an important source of palaeoenvironmental data, and of great interest as a potential carbon sink, due to its high apparent environmental stability. However, at least some forms of charcoal are clearly susceptible to environmental alteration and degradation over relatively short timescales. Although these processes have importance for the role of charcoal in global biogeochemistry, they remain poorly understood.</p> <p>Here we present results of an investigation into the susceptibility of a range of charcoal samples to oxidative degradation in acidified potassium dichromate. The study examines both freshly-produced charcoal, and charcoal exposed to environmental conditions for up to 50,000 years. We compare the proportion of carbon present in different forms between the samples, specifically with respect to the relative chemical resistance of these forms. This was undertaken in order to improve understanding of the post-depositional diagenetic changes affecting charcoal within environmental deposits.</p> <p>A wide range in chemical compositions are apparent both within and between the sample groups. In freshly-produced charcoal, material produced at 300 °C contains carbon with more labile forms than charcoal produced at ≥400 °C, signifying a key chemical change over the 300–400 °C temperature range. Charcoal exposed to environmental depositional conditions is frequently composed of a highly carboxylated aromatic structure and contains a range of carbon fractions of varying oxidative resistance. These findings suggest that a significant number of the environmental charcoals have undergone post-depositional diagenetic alteration. Further, the data highlight the potential for the use of controlled progressive oxidative degradation as a method to characterize chemical differences between individual charcoal samples.</p&gt

    The repulsive lattice gas, the independent-set polynomial, and the Lov\'asz local lemma

    We elucidate the close connection between the repulsive lattice gas in equilibrium statistical mechanics and the Lovasz local lemma in probabilistic combinatorics. We show that the conclusion of the Lovasz local lemma holds for dependency graph G and probabilities {p_x} if and only if the independent-set polynomial for G is nonvanishing in the polydisc of radii {p_x}. Furthermore, we show that the usual proof of the Lovasz local lemma -- which provides a sufficient condition for this to occur -- corresponds to a simple inductive argument for the nonvanishing of the independent-set polynomial in a polydisc, which was discovered implicitly by Shearer and explicitly by Dobrushin. We also present some refinements and extensions of both arguments, including a generalization of the Lovasz local lemma that allows for "soft" dependencies. In addition, we prove some general properties of the partition function of a repulsive lattice gas, most of which are consequences of the alternating-sign property for the Mayer coefficients.     Linkage analysis of von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis to DNA markers on chromosome 17

    Several recent studies indicate that the von Recklinghausen neurofibromatosis (NF1) gene is located near the centromere of chromosome 17 in some families. However, variable expressivity and a very high mutation rate suggest that defects at several different loci could result in phenotypes categorized as NF1. In order to assess this possibility and to map the NF1 gene more precisely, we have used two polymorphic DNA markers from chromosome 17 to screen several pedigrees for linkage to NF1. We ascertained a large Caucasian pedigree (33 individuals sampled, 17 NF1 affected) as well as eight smaller pedigrees and nuclear families (50 individuals sampled, 30 NF1 affected). Here, we report strong evidence of linkage of NF1 to the centromeric marker D17Z1 (maximum LOD = 4.42) and a weaker suggestion of linkage to the ERBA1 oncogene (maximum LOD = 0.57), both at a recombination fraction of zero. Since obligate crossovers with NF1 were not observed for either marker in any of the informative families tested, the possibility of NF1 locus heterogeneity is not supported.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/26488/1/0000024.pd

    First Measurement of Z/gamma* Production in Compton Scattering of Quasi-real Photons

    We report the first observation of Z/gamma* production in Compton scattering of quasi-real photons. This is a subprocess of the reaction e+e- to e+e-Z/gamma*, where one of the final state electrons is undetected. Approximately 55 pb-1 of data collected in the year 1997 at an e+e- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP have been analysed. The Z/gamma* from Compton scattering has been detected in the hadronic decay channel. Within well defined kinematic bounds, we measure the product of cross-section and Z/gamma* branching ratio to hadrons to be (0.9+-0.3+-0.1) pb for events with a hadronic mass larger than 60 GeV, dominated by (e)eZ production. In the hadronic mass region between 5 GeV and 60 GeV, dominated by (e)egamma* production, this product is found to be (4.1+-1.6+-0.6) pb. Our results agree with the predictions of two Monte Carlo event generators, grc4f and PYTHIA.Comment: 18 pages, LaTeX, 5 eps figures included, submitted to Physics Letters

    Neuron-glia cross talk in rat striatum after transient forebrain ischemia

    Striatum is highly vulnerable to transient forebrain ischemia induced by the 4 vessel occlusion (4V0) method (Brierley 1976. Pulsinelli et al. 1982, Zini et al. 1990a). Massive degeneration and loss of Nissl-stained neurons occur within 24 hr from an ischemia of long duration (30 min) (Pulsinelli et al. 1982). Neuronal loss is mainly restricted to the lateral part of caudate-putamen (Pulsinelli et al. 1982, Zini et al. 1990a). Cellular alterations include loss of medium-size spiny projection neurons (Pulsinelli et al. 1982, Francis and Pulsinelli 1982), largely corresponding to dopaminoceptive neurons (Benfenati et al. 1989, Zoli et al. 1989), and increase in reactive astrocytes (Pulsinelli et al. 1982, Grimaldi et al. 1990) and microglia (Gehrmann et al. 1982). On the other hand, large cholinergie (Francis and Pulsinelli 1982) and medium-size aspiny somatostatin (SS)/neuropeptide Y (NPY)-containing interneurons are resistant to the ischemic insult (Pulsinelli et al. 1982, Grimaldi et al. 1990). In a few instances, such as in the case of SS and NPY immunoreactivity (IR), the initial loss is followed by full recovery within 7 (SS) or 40 (NPY) days post-ischemia (Grimaldi et al. 1990). However, it is not known whether some kind of recovery is present for the bulk of medium-size spiny projections neurons after the first days post-ischemia

    Transcriptome Sequencing Revealed Significant Alteration of Cortical Promoter Usage and Splicing in Schizophrenia

    While hybridization based analysis of the cortical transcriptome has provided important insight into the neuropathology of schizophrenia, it represents a restricted view of disease-associated gene activity based on predetermined probes. By contrast, sequencing technology can provide un-biased analysis of transcription at nucleotide resolution. Here we use this approach to investigate schizophrenia-associated cortical gene expression.The data was generated from 76 bp reads of RNA-Seq, aligned to the reference genome and assembled into transcripts for quantification of exons, splice variants and alternative promoters in postmortem superior temporal gyrus (STG/BA22) from 9 male subjects with schizophrenia and 9 matched non-psychiatric controls. Differentially expressed genes were then subjected to further sequence and functional group analysis. The output, amounting to more than 38 Gb of sequence, revealed significant alteration of gene expression including many previously shown to be associated with schizophrenia. Gene ontology enrichment analysis followed by functional map construction identified three functional clusters highly relevant to schizophrenia including neurotransmission related functions, synaptic vesicle trafficking, and neural development. Significantly, more than 2000 genes displayed schizophrenia-associated alternative promoter usage and more than 1000 genes showed differential splicing (FDR<0.05). Both types of transcriptional isoforms were exemplified by reads aligned to the neurodevelopmentally significant doublecortin-like kinase 1 (DCLK1) gene.This study provided the first deep and un-biased analysis of schizophrenia-associated transcriptional diversity within the STG, and revealed variants with important implications for the complex pathophysiology of schizophrenia

    Findings from an in-depth annual tree-ring radiocarbon intercomparison

    The radiocarbon (Âč⁎C) calibration curve so far contains annually resolved data only for a short period of time. With accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) matching the precision of decay counting, it is now possible to efficiently produce large datasets of annual resolution for calibration purposes using small amounts of wood. The radiocarbon intercomparison on single-year tree-ring samples presented here is the first to investigate specifically possible offsets between AMS laboratories at high precision. The results show that AMS laboratories are capable of measuring samples of Holocene age with an accuracy and precision that is comparable or even goes beyond what is possible with decay counting, even though they require a thousand times less wood. It also shows that not all AMS laboratories always produce results that are consistent with their stated uncertainties. The long-term benefits of studies of this kind are more accurate radiocarbon measurements with, in the future, better quantified uncertainties
