Nodular-Type Lichen Myxedematosus: A Case Report

    Get PDF
An 18-year-old Japanese woman noticed a progressive appearance of nodules on both forearms and on the left cubital fossa and left thigh one year before her initial consultation at our department. Physical examination showed elastic hard, slightly elevated, shiny and yellowish to skin-colored nodules of 6 to 10 mm in size on her extremities. From laboratory and histopathological findings, nodular-type lichen myxedematosus was diagnosed and nodules showed complete remission following local injection of triamcinolone acetonide

This is a report of the new type of lectures on the development of teaching plans and teaching materials attempted in the science class in the Master's Course, Okayama University. The lectures were conducted in collaboration of the graduate students and the academic staffs in the science education course, and the science teachers of the attached school of Okayama University. The graduate students were grouped into two teams of five or six people, assigned to decide on themes, prepare and practice the development of teaching plans and teaching materials. They conducted their activities discussing problems with people of different experience and specialty, thus developing the ability to jointly propose and solve problems at schools in future

Development of a ubiquitous healthcare monitoring system combined with non-conscious and ambulatory physiological measurements and its application to medical care

The demand for ubiquitous healthcare monitoring has been increasingly raised for prevention of lifestyle-related diseases, acute life support or chronic therapies for inpatients and/or outpatients having chronic disorder and home medical care. From these view points, we developed a non-conscious healthcare monitoring system without any attachment of biological sensors and operations of devices, and an ambulatory postural changes and activities monitoring system. Furthermore in this study, in order to investigate those applicability to the ubiquitous healthcare monitoring, we have developed a new healthcare monitoring system combined with the non-conscious and the ambulatory measurements developed by us. In patients with chronic cardiovascular disease or stroke, the daily health conditions such as pulse, respiration, activities and so on, could be continuously measured in the hospital, the rehabilitation room and subject\u27s own home, using the present system. The results demonstrated that the system appears useful for the ubiquitous healthcare monitoring not only at medical facility, but also during daily living at home. © 2011 IEEE

Tip Leakage Vortex Cavitation from the Tip Clearance of a Single Hydrofoil

Abstract Focusing on the tip leakage vortex cavitation, experimental and numerical studies were carried out as the first step of the investigation of cavitations in tip leakage flow. For a single hydrofoil with a tip clearance, tip leakage vortex cavitations were observed for various cavitation numbers and angles of attack. To simulate the tip leakage vortex cavitation, a simple calculation of 2-D unsteady flow based on the slender body approximation with taking into account the effects of cavity growth (Watanabe et al., 2001) was made. The results of calculations show qualitative agreement with the experimental results with respect to the location and size of the cavity. The influences of the cavitation number, angle of attack, blade loading, and the size of tip clearance were simulated reasonably well

Synthesis of Network Biobased Aliphatic Polyesters Exhibiting Better Tensile Properties than the Linear Polymers by ADMET Polymerization in the Presence of Glycerol Tris(undec-10-enoate)

Development of biobased aliphatic polyesters with better mechanical (tensile) properties in film has attracted considerable attention. This report presents the synthesis of soluble network biobased aliphatic polyesters by acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization of bis(undec-10-enyl)isosorbide diester [M1, dianhydro-D-glucityl bis(undec-10-enoate)] in the presence of a tri-arm crosslinker [CL, glycerol tris(undec-10-enoate)] using a ruthenium–carbene catalyst, and subsequent olefin hydrogenation using RhCl(PPh3)3. The resultant polymers, after hydrogenation (expressed as HCP1) and prepared in the presence of 1.0 mol% CL, showed better tensile properties than the linear polymer (HP1) with similar molecular weight [tensile strength (elongation at break): 20.8 MPa (282%) in HP1 vs. 35.4 MPa (572%) in HCP1]. It turned out that the polymer films prepared by the addition of CL during the polymerization (expressed as a 2-step approach) showed better tensile properties. The resultant polymer film also shows better tensile properties than the conventional polyolefins such as linear high density polyethylene, polypropylene, and low density polyethylene
