Viscous Hydrodynamics and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions
The matter created in relativistic heavy ion collisions is fairly well
described by ideal hydrodynamics, and somewhat better described by viscous
hydrodynamics. To this point, most viscous calculations have been
two-dimensional, based on an assumption of Bjorken boost invariance along the
beam axis. Here, first results are presented for a fully three-dimensional
viscous model. The model is described and tests of the numerical accuracy of
the code are presented. Two- and three-dimensional runs are compared, and
modest changes are observed for mid-rapidity observables at the highest RHIC
(Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) energies.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figure
Tsunamis, Viscosity and the HBT Puzzle
The equation of state and bulk and shear viscosities are shown to be able to
affect the transverse dynamics of a central heavy ion collision. The net
entropy, along with the femtoscopic radii are shown to be affected at the
10-20% level by both shear and bulk viscosity. The degree to which these
effects help build a tsunami-like pulse is also discussed.Comment: Contribution to SQM 2007 in Levoca, Slovaki
Canonical and Microcanonical Distributions for Fermi Systems
Recursion relations are presented that allow exact calculation of canonical
and microcanonical partition functions of degenerate Fermi systems, assuming no
explicit two-body interactions. Calculations of the level density, sorted by
angular momentum, are presented for Ni-56 are presented. The issue of treating
unbound states is also addressed.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
The Quark-Gluon Plasma in a Finite Volume
The statistical mechanics of quarks and gluons are investigated within the
context of the canonical ensemble. Recursive techniques are developed which
enforce the exact conservation of baryon number, total isospin, electric
charge, strangeness, and color. Bose and Fermi-Dirac statistics are also
accounted for to all orders. The energy, entropy and particle number densities
are shown to be significantly reduced for volumes less than 5 cubic fm.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Exploring the nuclear pion dispersion relation through the anomalous coupling of photon to photon and neutral pion
We investigate the possibility of measuring the pion dispersion relation in
nuclear matter through the anomalous coupling in the reaction \gamma - \gamma'
\pi_0. It is shown that this reaction permits the study of pionic modes for
space-like momenta. If the pion is softened in nuclear matter due to mixing
with the delta-hole state, significant strength for this reaction is expected
to move into the space-like region. Competing background processes are
evaluated, and it is concluded that useful insight can be obtained
experimentally, but only through a difficult exclusive measurement
Statistical and Dynamic Models of Charge Balance Functions
Charge balance functions, which identify balancing particle-antiparticle
pairs on a statistical basis, have been shown to be sensitive to whether
hadronization is delayed by several fm/c in relativistic heavy ion collisions.
Results from two classes of models are presented here, microscopic hadronic
models and thermal models. The microscopic models give results which are
contrary to recently published pi+pi- balance functions from the STAR
collaboration, whereas the thermal model roughly reproduce the experimental
results. This suggests that charge conservation is local at breakup, which is
in line with expectations for a delayed hadronization. Predictions are also
presented for balance functions binned as a function of Q_inv.Comment: 12 pages 6 figure
Rare isotope production in statistical multifragmentation
Producing rare isotopes through statistical multifragmentation is
investigated using the Mekjian method for exact solutions of the canonical
ensemble. Both the initial fragmentation and the the sequential decay are
modeled in such a way as to avoid Monte Carlo and thus provide yields for
arbitrarily scarce fragments. The importance of sequential decay, exact
particle-number conservation and the sensitivities to parameters such as
density and temperature are explored. Recent measurements of isotope ratios
from the fragmentation of different Sn isotopes are interpreted within this
picture.Comment: 10 eps figure

Clocking hadronization in relativistic heavy ion collisions with balance functions
A novel state of matter has been hypothesized to exist during the early stage
of relativistic heavy ion collisions, with normal hadrons not appearing until
several fm/c after the start of the reaction. To test this hypothesis,
correlations between charges and their associated anticharges are evaluated
with the use of balance functions. It is shown that late-stage hadronization is
characterized by tightly correlated charge/anticharge pairs when measured as a
function of relative rapidity.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
