Information Security in the Extended Enterprise: A Research Agenda

Today most companies are closely knit together with and thus dependent on suppliers, allies, customers, and public authorities. Member companies in such an extended enterprise or “business network ” are either forced or volunteer to meet certain security objectives as a whole. As a consequence, the business network needs to agree on a common strategy, joint processes and technical interfaces to meet regulatory or voluntary requirements from industry standards. Reality shows that – even if standards exist – they are not harmonized and access and reconciliation between partners is sometimes legally, if not technically impossible, or simply too expensive. The serious and economic assessment of risks, already tough on the internal scale, becomes almost an insurmountable obstacle when considering the entire business network. This paper’s objective is to emphasize the importance of security in business networks for research and practice. Since there is little research available, it raises major questions to be answered by a future research agenda. A basic research framework is derived based on related research, an observation of the interdependencies of firms and a series of cases from different industry sectors. Finally, the paper discusses which factors and incentives might be catalysts for the adoption of such a framework by a single firm, business network, or even public welfare

Chapter 2 EMERGENT RISKS IN CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURES

Abstract Firms cannot function successfully without managing a host of internal and external organizational and process interdependencies. Part of this involves business continuity planning, which directly affects how resilient a firm and its business sector are in the face of disruptions. This paper presents the results of field studies related to information risk management practices in the health care and retail sectors. The studies explore information risk management coordinating signals within and across firms in these sectors as well as the potential effects of cyber disruptions on the firms as stand-alone entities and as part of a critical infrastructure. The health care case study investigates the impact of the Zotob worm on the ability to deliver medical care and treatment. The retail study examines the resilience of certain elements of the food supply chain to cyber disruptions

Managing of Information Systems Risks in Extended Enterprises: The Case of Outsourcing

IT security issues and outsourcing of business processes are common but largely disjoint themes in the literature; common consideration is rare even though information security risk becomes a shared risk both through IS-based processes at outsourcing partners and potentially tightly-integrated IS systems. This paper explores this lack of an integrated model combining IT risk management view with the outsourcing process. Towards the development of an integrated model outsourcing and risk managing process phases are detailed; common phases of each serve as the basis for the introduction of an integrated model. Finally the paper suggests some points for future research

The Impact of Beam Variations on Power Spectrum Estimation for 21 cm Cosmology II: Mitigation of Foreground Systematics for HERA

One key challenge in detecting 21 cm cosmological signal at z > 6 is to separate the cosmological signal from foreground emission. This can be studied in a power spectrum space where the foreground is confined to low delay modes whereas the cosmological signal can spread out to high delay modes. When there is a calibration error, however, chromaticity of gain errors propagates to the power spectrum estimate and contaminates the modes for cosmological detection. The Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) employs a high-precision calibration scheme using redundancy in measurements. In this study, we focus on the gain errors induced by nonredundancies arising from feed offset relative to the HERA's 14 meter parabolic dish element, and investigate how to mitigate the chromatic gain errors using three different methods: restricting baseline lengths for calibration, smoothing the antenna gains, and applying a temporal filter prior to calibration. With 2 cm/2 degree perturbations for translation/tilting motions, a level achievable under normal HERA operating conditions, the combination of the baseline cut and temporal filtering indicates that the spurious gain feature due to nonredundancies is significantly reduced, and the power spectrum recovers the clean foreground-free region. We found that the mitigation technique works even for large feed motions but in order to keep a stable calibration process, the feed positions need to be constrained to 2 cm for translation motions and 2 degree for tilting offset relative to the dish's vertex.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap

Bridging Alone: Religious Conservatism, Marital Homogamy, and Voluntary Association Membership

This study characterizes social insularity of religiously conservative American married couples by examining patterns of voluntary associationmembership. Constructing a dataset of 3938 marital dyads from the second wave of the National Survey of Families and Households, the author investigates whether conservative religious homogamy encourages membership in religious voluntary groups and discourages membership in secular voluntary groups. Results indicate that couples’ shared affiliation with conservative denominations, paired with beliefs in biblical authority and inerrancy, increases the likelihood of religious group membership for husbands and wives and reduces the likelihood of secular group membership for wives, but not for husbands. The social insularity of conservative religious groups appears to be reinforced by homogamy—particularly by wives who share faith with husbands
