    Cow-Calf Operations in the Southeastern United States: An Analysis of Farm Characteristics and Production Risks

    Beef cattle production in the southeastern United States differs in size, practice, and production type from other U.S. regions. Smaller, cow-calf type operations dominate in this region because the climate, forage availability, and other land use practices of farmers make this type of cattle operation more ideal for the Southeast. This research summarizes the current practices and characteristics that define the Southeastern cow-calf operation of today’s market and operating environment; it also examines the factors that influence the variability of beef production in these operations. Results indicate the following major points: 1.) 53.0% of respondents with commercial cows have fewer than 50 head. 2.) Weaning weight and its variability tend to increase as calves get older. 3.) Calves on seedstock operations wean heavier than those typical of cow-calf operations. 4.) Operators that are more financially invested in their operation seem to be more attentive to outcomes of their production process

    Similarity and Coincidence Isometries for Modules

    The groups of (linear) similarity and coincidence isometries of certain modules in d-dimensional Euclidean space, which naturally occur in quasicrystallography, are considered. It is shown that the structure of the factor group of similarity modulo coincidence isometries is the direct sum of cyclic groups of prime power orders that divide d. In particular, if the dimension d is a prime number p, the factor group is an elementary Abelian p-group. This generalizes previous results obtained for lattices to situations relevant in quasicrystallography.Comment: 14 page

    This project involves the use of mechanical engineering expertise to develop, design, and create a functioning prototype of a collapsible coffee cup. The prototype is to be designed to the specifications given by Jason Blum, the project sponsor. Allowances may be given for design freedom as specified by Jason Blum. The goal of this project is to create a product which may replace the both the disposable coffee cups distributed at coffee shops as well as to create a product which may replace the traditional travel mug due to its increased portability. Team Poly Cup has worked throughout the year to design and test numerous locking mechanisms, water-tight seals, grips, and lids and have performed many calculations and created many prototypes to ensure the best design. We have expanded and finalized the design, completed a detailed cost analysis, finalized design verification, developed a manufacturing plan, and compiled a list of unique features that can be patented. In this report, we conclude the project, leaving Jason Blum with a completed prototype of the cup, as well as all documents needed for him to proceed with patenting and manufacturing of the cup

    Identification of domains of the Tomato spotted wilt virus NSm protein involved in tubule formation, movement and symptomatology

    AbstractDeletion and alanine-substitution mutants of the Tomato spotted wilt virus NSm protein were generated to identify domains involved in tubule formation, movement and symptomatology using a heterologous Tobacco mosaic virus expression system. Two regions of NSm, G19-S159 and G209-V283, were required for both tubule formation in protoplasts and cell-to-cell movement in plants, indicating a correlation between these activities. Three amino acid groups, D154, EYKK205–208 and EEEEE284–288 were linked with long-distance movement in Nicotiana benthamiana. EEEEE284–288 was essential for NSm-mediated long-distance movement, whereas D154 was essential for tubule formation and cell-to-cell movement; indicating separate genetic controls for cell-to-cell and long-distance movement. The region I57-N100 was identified as the determinant of foliar necrosis in Nicotiana benthamiana, and mutagenesis of HH93–94 greatly reduced necrosis. These findings are likely applicable to other tospovirus species, especially those within the ‘New World’ group as NSm sequences are highly conserved

    Assessment of Streamside Management Zones for Conserving Benthic Macroinvertebrate Communities Following Timber Harvest in Eastern Kentucky Headwater Catchments

    Headwater streams generally comprise the majority of stream area in a watershed and can have a strong influence on downstream food webs. Our objective was to determine the effect of altering streamside management zone (SMZ) configurations on headwater aquatic insect communities. Timber harvests were implemented within six watersheds in eastern Kentucky. The SMZ configurations varied in width, canopy retention and best management practice (BMP) utilization at the watershed scale. Benthic macroinvertebrate samples collected one year before and four years after harvest indicated few differences among treatments, although post-treatment abundance was elevated in some of the treatment streams relative to the unharvested controls. Jaccard index values were similar across SMZ treatments after logging, indicating strong community overlap. These findings suggest that stream invertebrate communities did respond to the timber harvest, though not negatively. Results also suggest that SMZ criteria for aquatic habitats in steeply sloping topography, including at least 50 percent canopy retention and widths of at least 16.8 m, appear to be adequate for protecting benthic macroinvertebrate communities from logging impacts

    Extending the Apprenticeship of Observation: How Mentee Experience Shape Mentors

    Although the importance of mentor teachers in clinical teacher preparation is well established, few researchers explore the social identity development of these individuals. Through our study we contribute to the body of research by exploring mentor teachers\u27 social identity development through the concept of Apprenticeship of Observation - specifically, how they felt their own mentoring experiences influenced their approaches to mentoring. The multi-case study includes findings about mentoring beliefs and practices during the laboratory school component of an Alternate Route to Licensure program. Incorporating semi-structured interviews and video analysis, the findings demonstrate how four mentor teachers\u27 prior experiences as mentees - including Alternate Route to Licensure, traditional teacher preparation programs, and inservice teaching - influenced their interactions with teacher candidates as mentors. Recommendations for practice and implications for future research are provided
