Measuring Stellar Radial Velocities with a Dispersed Fixed-Delay Interferometer
We demonstrate the ability to measure precise stellar barycentric radial
velocities with the dispersed fixed-delay interferometer technique using the
Exoplanet Tracker (ET), an instrument primarily designed for precision
differential Doppler velocity measurements using this technique. Our
barycentric radial velocities, derived from observations taken at the KPNO 2.1
meter telescope, differ from those of Nidever et al. by 0.047 km/s (rms) when
simultaneous iodine calibration is used, and by 0.120 km/s (rms) without
simultaneous iodine calibration. Our results effectively show that a Michelson
interferometer coupled to a spectrograph allows precise measurements of
barycentric radial velocities even at a modest spectral resolution of R ~ 5100.
A multi-object version of the ET instrument capable of observing ~500 stars per
night is being used at the Sloan 2.5 m telescope at Apache Point Observatory
for the Multi-object APO Radial Velocity Exoplanet Large-area Survey (MARVELS),
a wide-field radial velocity survey for extrasolar planets around TYCHO-2 stars
in the magnitude range 7.6<V<12. In addition to precise differential
velocities, this survey will also yield precise barycentric radial velocities
for many thousands of stars using the data analysis techniques reported here.
Such a large kinematic survey at high velocity precision will be useful in
identifying the signature of accretion events in the Milky Way and
understanding local stellar kinematics in addition to discovering exoplanets,

High Energy Colliders as Black Hole Factories: The End of Short Distance Physics
If the fundamental Planck scale is of order a TeV, as the case in some
extra-dimensions scenarios, future hadron colliders such as the Large Hadron
Collider will be black hole factories. The non-perturbative process of black
hole formation and decay by Hawking evaporation gives rise to spectacular
events with up to many dozens of relatively hard jets and leptons, with a
characteristic ratio of hadronic to leptonic activity of roughly 5:1. The total
transverse energy of such events is typically a sizeable fraction of the beam
energy. Perturbative hard scattering processes at energies well above the
Planck scale are cloaked behind a horizon, thus limiting the ability to probe
short distances. The high energy black hole cross section grows with energy at
a rate determined by the dimensionality and geometry of the extra dimensions.
This dependence therefore probes the extra dimensions at distances larger than

The importance of quantum decoherence in brain processes
Based on a calculation of neural decoherence rates, we argue that that the
degrees of freedom of the human brain that relate to cognitive processes should
be thought of as a classical rather than quantum system, i.e., that there is
nothing fundamentally wrong with the current classical approach to neural
network simulations. We find that the decoherence timescales ~10^{-13}-10^{-20}
seconds are typically much shorter than the relevant dynamical timescales
(~0.001-0.1 seconds), both for regular neuron firing and for kink-like
polarization excitations in microtubules. This conclusion disagrees with
suggestions by Penrose and others that the brain acts as a quantum computer,

Family medicine graduates' perceptions of intimidation, harassment, and discrimination during residency training
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Despite there being considerable literature documenting learner distress and perceptions of mistreatment in medical education settings, these concerns have not been explored in-depth in Canadian family medicine residency programs. The purpose of the study was to examine intimidation, harassment and/or discrimination (IHD) as reported by Alberta family medicine graduates during their two-year residency program.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A retrospective questionnaire survey was conducted of all (n = 377) family medicine graduates from the University of Alberta and University of Calgary who completed residency training during 2001-2005. The frequency, type, source, and perceived basis of IHD were examined by gender, age, and Canadian vs international medical graduate. Descriptive data analysis (frequency, crosstabs), Chi-square, Fisher's Exact test, analysis of variance, and logistic regression were used as appropriate.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 377 graduates, 242 (64.2%) responded to the survey, with 44.7% reporting they had experienced IHD while a resident. The most frequent type of IHD experienced was in the form of inappropriate verbal comments (94.3%), followed by work as punishment (27.6%). The main sources of IHD were specialist physicians (77.1%), hospital nurses (54.3%), specialty residents (45.7%), and patients (35.2%). The primary basis for IHD was perceived to be gender (26.7%), followed by ethnicity (16.2%), and culture (9.5%). A significantly greater proportion of males (38.6%) than females (20.0%) experienced IHD in the form of work as punishment. While a similar proportion of Canadian (46.1%) and international medical graduates (IMGs) (41.0%) experienced IHD, a significantly greater proportion of IMGs perceived ethnicity, culture, or language to be the basis of IHD.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Perceptions of IHD are prevalent among family medicine graduates. Residency programs should explicitly recognize and robustly address all IHD concerns.</p
Does the Committee Peer Review Select the Best Applicants for Funding? An Investigation of the Selection Process for Two European Molecular Biology Organization Programmes
Does peer review fulfill its declared objective of identifying the best science and the best scientists? In order to answer this question we analyzed the Long-Term Fellowship and the Young Investigator programmes of the European Molecular Biology Organization. Both programmes aim to identify and support the best post doctoral fellows and young group leaders in the life sciences. We checked the association between the selection decisions and the scientific performance of the applicants. Our study involved publication and citation data for 668 applicants to the Long-Term Fellowship programme from the year 1998 (130 approved, 538 rejected) and 297 applicants to the Young Investigator programme (39 approved and 258 rejected applicants) from the years 2001 and 2002. If quantity and impact of research publications are used as a criterion for scientific achievement, the results of (zero-truncated) negative binomial models show that the peer review process indeed selects scientists who perform on a higher level than the rejected ones subsequent to application. We determined the extent of errors due to over-estimation (type I errors) and under-estimation (type 2 errors) of future scientific performance. Our statistical analyses point out that between 26% and 48% of the decisions made to award or reject an application show one of both error types. Even though for a part of the applicants, the selection committee did not correctly estimate the applicant's future performance, the results show a statistically significant association between selection decisions and the applicants' scientific achievements, if quantity and impact of research publications are used as a criterion for scientific achievement
