Computer code for single-point thermodynamic analysis of hydrogen/oxygen expander-cycle rocket engines
This analysis and this computer code apply to full, split, and dual expander cycles. Heat regeneration from the turbine exhaust to the pump exhaust is allowed. The combustion process is modeled as one of chemical equilibrium in an infinite-area or a finite-area combustor. Gas composition in the nozzle may be either equilibrium or frozen during expansion. This report, which serves as a users guide for the computer code, describes the system, the analysis methodology, and the program input and output. Sample calculations are included to show effects of key variables such as nozzle area ratio and oxidizer-to-fuel mass ratio

NOTES ON INDONESIAN FRESHWATER ALGAE - IV. Concerning Euastrum moebii (Borge) Scott & Prescott comb. nov. and Euastrum turgidum Wallich.
The desmid presently known as Mierasterias moebii (Borge) West & West is transferred back to the genus Euastrum where it was originally placed by its discoverer, together with its several varieties, for reasons that are discussed in detail. There are described one new variety, var. diplocanthylum from Australia, and one new forma, var. tetrachastriforme fa. latum from Borneo. New illustrations are given for Euastrum, turgidum Wall., and criteria are suggested for differentiating this plant from the closely similar E. moebii
The Ucsd/Keck Damped Lya Abundance Database: A Decade of High Resolution Spectroscopy
We publish the Keck/HIRES and Keck/ESI spectra that we have obtained during
the first 10 years of Keck observatory operations. Our full sample includes 42
HIRES spectra and 39 ESI spectra along 65 unique sightlines providing abundance
measurements on ~85 damped Lya systems. The normalized data can be downloaded
from the journal or from our supporting website:
http://www.ucolick.org/~xavier/DLA/. The database includes all of the
sightlines that have been included in our papers on the chemical abundances,
kinematics, and metallicities of the damped Lya systems. This data has also
been used to argue for variations in the fine-structure constant. We present
new chemical abundance measurements for 10 damped Lya systems and a summary
table of high-resolution metallicity measurements (including values from the
literature) for 153 damped Lya systems at z>1.6. We caution, however, that this
metallicity sample (and all previous ones) is biased to higher N(HI) values
than a random sample.Comment: 55 pages, 11 figures. Accepted to ApJS. See

Food Security Monitoring and Evaluation in Rural Mali: Preliminary Findings
African Sky is a non-profit organization that has been continuously involved in community development efforts in the Sikasso, Koulikoro, and Segou regions of Mali since 2001. To inform these efforts, an assessment of survey and census data was conducted focusing on the rural village of Dissan, in the Sikasso region. During the evaluation period between 2001-2010 Dissan experienced highly variable rainfall. We hypothesized these conditions would negatively impact farming output, and as a result, nutritional status of the people living in Dissan. Our analysis shows that while land use did not change significantly, by household the variety of sorghum crops increased and non-sorghum food crops decreased. Farmers in Dissan are changing crop distribution due to an increased availability of new sorghum seed and in response to a variety of environmental factors
SuperGaN: Synthesis of NbTiN/GaN/NbTiN Tunnel Junctions
Nb-based circuits have broad applications in quantum-limited photon
detectors, low-noise parametric amplifiers, superconducting digital logic
circuits, and low-loss circuits for quantum computing. The current
state-of-the-art approach for superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS)
junction material is the Gurvitch trilayer process based on magnetron
sputtering of Nb electrodes with Al-Oxide or AlN tunnel barriers grown on an Al
overlayer. However, a current limitation of elemental Nb-based circuits is the
low-loss operation of THz circuits operating above the 670 GHz gap frequency of
Nb and operation at higher temperatures for projects with a strict power
budget, such as space-based applications.
NbTiN is an alternative higher energy gap material and we have previously
reported on the first NbTiN/AlN/NbTiN
superconducting-insulating-superconducting (SIS) junctions with an epitaxially
grown AlN tunnel barrier. One drawback of a directly grown tunnel barrier
compared to thermal oxidation or plasma nitridation is control of the barrier
thickness and uniformity across a substrate, leading to variations in current
density (Jc). Semiconductor barriers with smaller barrier heights enable
thicker tunnel barriers for a given Jc. GaN is an alternative semiconductor
material with a closed-packed Wurtzite crystal structure similar to AlN and it
can be epitaxially grown as a tunnel barrier using the Reactive Bias Target Ion
Beam Deposition (RBTIBD) technique. This work presents the preliminary results
of the first reported high-quality NbTiN/GaN/NbTiN heterojunctions with
underdamped SIS I(V) characteristics.Comment: Presented at the 16th EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON APPLIED

HexPak and GradPak: variable-pitch dual-head IFUs for the WIYN 3.5m Telescope Bench Spectrograph
We describe the design, construction, and expected performance of two new
fiber integral field units (IFUs) --- HexPak and GradPak --- for the WIYN 3.5m
Telescope Nasmyth focus and Bench Spectrograph. These are the first IFUs to
provide formatted fiber integral field spectroscopy with simultaneous sampling
of varying angular scales. HexPak and GradPak are in a single cable with a
dual-head design, permitting easy switching between the two different IFU heads
on the telescope without changing the spectrograph feed: the two heads feed a
variable-width double-slit. Each IFU head is comprised of a fixed arrangement
of fibers with a range of fiber diameters. The layout and diameters of the
fibers within each array are scientifically-driven for observations of
galaxies: HexPak is designed to observe face-on spiral or spheroidal galaxies
while GradPak is optimized for edge-on studies of galaxy disks. HexPak is a
hexagonal array of 2.9 arcsec fibers subtending a 40.9 arcsec diameter, with a
high-resolution circular core of 0.94 arcsec fibers subtending 6 arcsec
diameter. GradPak is a 39 by 55 arcsec rectangular array with rows of fibers of
increasing diameter from angular scales of 1.9 arcsec to 5.6 arcsec across the
array. The variable pitch of these IFU heads allows for adequate sampling of
light profile gradients while maintaining the photon limit at different scales.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, presented at SPIE, Astronomical Telescopes and

Reducing biting rates of Aedes aegypti with metofluthrin: investigations in time and space
Background: Indoor residual spraying is key to dengue control in Cairns and other parts of northern Queensland, Australia, where Aedes aegypti is prevalent, but the strategy faces challenges with regards to slow application time and, therefore, community coverage. A faster potential improvement might be the use of polyethylene netting impregnated with the volatile pyrethroid metofluthrin (SumiOneâ„¢). This formulation was assessed in rooms in three houses in Cairns, Australia. One emanator was placed in each room and cages of 10 female Aedes aegypti were exposed at distances of 1 and 3 m. Knockdown and landings on a human hand were counted before metofluthrin exposure and at 10, 30, 60, 90 and 120 min during exposure. In addition, two trials continued over 48 h of exposure to assess the long-term sublethal effects of metofluthrin on caged mosquitoes. Results: Percentage landing rates fell to 0-2.5% in the first 10 min of exposure. Knockdown was most evident between 10 and 30 min (54% at 1 m and 33% at 3 m). Distance from the emanator strongly affected the results: mosquitoes at 3 m exhibited less knockdown and more landings than those at 1 m. As room volume increased, knockdown decreased and the number of landing increased. There is a cumulative mortality and landing inhibition and, for mosquitoes exposed to metofluthrin for > 48 h, mortality was 100% at 1 m and 90% at 3 m. Of those still alive, a small number continued to land and bite. After being removed from metofluthrin-treated rooms, exposed insect cages were found to reducing landing rates for up to 2 h. Conclusions: Despite only moderate levels of knockdown during the initial hours of exposure, metofluthrin emanators were effective in reducing mosquito landing rates, especially within 1 m, even when exposed on an open veranda. The evaluation methods and results described in this paper will help inform the optimal conditions of deployment of metofluthrin emanators. These devices have the potential to reduce contact between humans and urban disease vectors faster than indoor residual spraying so supplement our current arsenal of dengue control tools
