Digital cultural heritage: Collaborating with students and discovering lost museums
Our paper consists of two parts. First, we review the history of the Royal United Service Institute (RUSI) museum, its collections, its closure and the dispersal of its collections. Second, we synthesize this analysis with a summary and reflection on the challenges of undertaking a collective memory project that represents the rise and fall of empire. To synthesize these two points, we discuss the museum’s history and highlight how digital cultural heritage initiatives have catalyzed an interest in digitizing and archiving RUSI’s collection records. Following our review of RUSI and its museum collection, we discuss the value of academics forming partnerships with cultural heritage institutions, and we analyze our experiences managing two student projects hosted at RUSI. Our discussion of student work will reflect on methods for designing engaging curriculum that encourages students to practice record keeping for cultural heritage institutions
Solution of the Quasispecies Model for an Arbitrary Gene Network
In this paper, we study the equilibrium behavior of Eigen's quasispecies
equations for an arbitrary gene network. We consider a genome consisting of genes, so that each gene sequence may be written as . We assume a single fitness peak (SFP) model
for each gene, so that gene has some ``master'' sequence for which it is functioning. The fitness landscape is then determined by
which genes in the genome are functioning, and which are not. The equilibrium
behavior of this model may be solved in the limit of infinite sequence length.
The central result is that, instead of a single error catastrophe, the model
exhibits a series of localization to delocalization transitions, which we term
an ``error cascade.'' As the mutation rate is increased, the selective
advantage for maintaining functional copies of certain genes in the network
disappears, and the population distribution delocalizes over the corresponding
sequence spaces. The network goes through a series of such transitions, as more
and more genes become inactivated, until eventually delocalization occurs over
the entire genome space, resulting in a final error catastrophe. This model
provides a criterion for determining the conditions under which certain genes
in a genome will lose functionality due to genetic drift. It also provides
insight into the response of gene networks to mutagens. In particular, it
suggests an approach for determining the relative importance of various genes
to the fitness of an organism, in a more accurate manner than the standard
``deletion set'' method. The results in this paper also have implications for

Imaging of Thermal Domains in ultrathin NbN films for Hot Electron Bolometers
We present low-temperature scanning electron microscopy (LTSEM)
investigations of superconducting microbridges made from ultrathin NbN films as
used for hot electron bolometers. LTSEM probes the thermal structure within the
microbridges under various dc current bias conditions, either via
electron-beam-induced generation of an unstable hotspot, or via the
beam-induced growth of a stable hotspot. Such measurements reveal
inhomogeneities on a micron scale, which may be due to spatial variations in
the NbN film or film-interface properties. Comparison with model calculations
for the stable hotspot regime confirm the basic features of common hot spot

EVALUATING THE IMPACT OF INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT ON AGRICULTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT IN THE TEXAS PANHANDLE
Agricultural producers in the Texas High Plains are facing the worst comparative economic conditions since 1913. Under these circumstances it is desirable to evaluate which programs are beneficial to agricultural producers and which ones are not. The concept of Integrated Pest Management was introduced to the Texas High Plains in 1976 and since then many IPM practices have been adopted for the four major crops; corn, cotton, sorghum, and wheat. The reduction in production cost is used as a measure of economic benefit and contingent valuation is used to estimate the value of the environmental benefits. The IPM practices, which have been adopted, reduce the production cost by more than 99 million per year. The total value of the economic and environmental benefits accruing to the Texas High Plains exceeds $272 million per year.Crop Production/Industries,
Memory difference control of unknown unstable fixed points: Drifting parameter conditions and delayed measurement
Difference control schemes for controlling unstable fixed points become
important if the exact position of the fixed point is unavailable or moving due
to drifting parameters. We propose a memory difference control method for
stabilization of a priori unknown unstable fixed points by introducing a memory
term. If the amplitude of the control applied in the previous time step is
added to the present control signal, fixed points with arbitrary Lyapunov
numbers can be controlled. This method is also extended to compensate arbitrary
time steps of measurement delay. We show that our method stabilizes orbits of

Plasmon Evolution and Charge-Density Wave Suppression in Potassium Intercalated Tantalum Diselenide
We have investigated the influence of potassium intercalation on the
formation of the charge-density wave (CDW) instability in 2H-tantalum
diselenide by means of Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy and density functional
theory. Our observations are consistent with a filling of the conduction band
as indicated by a substantial decrease of the plasma frequency in experiment
and theory. In addition, elastic scattering clearly points to a destruction of
the CDW upon intercalation as can be seen by a vanishing of the corresponding
superstructures. This is accompanied by a new superstructure, which can be
attributed to the intercalated potassium. Based on the behavior of the c-axis
upon intercalation we argue in favor of interlayer-sites for the alkali-metal
and that the lattice remains in the 2H-modification
