Opportunities for ceramics in the ERDA/NASA continuous combustion propulsion systems program
An overview on engine development projects for potential use of ceramics is reported. A major ceramics materials technology effort is described to meet anticipated engine system requirements in terms of the automotive application, some of the more pressing technology needs, and some indications of how to conduct this technology program with industry-engine development projects focus on both gas turbine and Stirling engines
Elastic and plastic effects on heterogeneous nucleation and nanowire formation
We investigate theoretically the effects of elastic and plastic deformations
on heterogeneous nucleation and nanowire formation. In the first case, the
influence of the confinement of the critical nucleus between two parallel
misfitting substrates is investigated using scaling arguments. We present phase
diagrams giving the nature of the nucleation regime as a function of the
driving force and the degree of confinement. We complement this analytical
study by amplitude equations simulations. In the second case, the influence of
a screw dislocation inside a nanowire on the development of the morphological
surface stability of the wire, related to the Rayleigh-Plateau instability, is
examined. Here the screw dislocation provokes a torsion of the wire known as
Eshelby twist. Numerical calculations using the finite element method and the
amplitude equations are performed to support analytical investigations. It is
shown that the screw dislocation promotes the Rayleigh-Plateau instability.Comment: 16 page
Acute pulmonary pathology and sudden death in rats following the intravenous administration of the plasticizer, DI (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, solubilized with Tween surfactants
Intravenous administration of 200-300 mg/kg of di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) solubilized in aqueous solutions of several Tween surfactants caused respiratory distress in rats. There was a dose-dependent lethality with death generally occurring within 90 minutes after injection. The lungs from DEHP:Tween treated animals were enlarged, generally darkened, and in some cases showed hemorrhagic congestion. Neither the overt symptoms nor the morphologic alterations resulting from DEHP:Tween administration could be reproduced by intravenous administration of aqueous Tween solutions alone. The absence of pulmonary abnormalities following the intravenous administration of DEHP as an aqueous emulsion given either alone or even as soon as 2 minutes after pretreatment with Tween 80, suggests that the specific in vivo interaction between DEHP and Tween surfactants depends on the prior formation of water-soluble micelles of DEHP
Dynamical Ne K Edge and Line Variations in the X-Ray Spectrum of the Ultra-compact Binary 4U 0614+091
We observed the ultra-compact binary candidate 4U 0614+091 for a total of 200
ksec with the high-energy transmission gratings onboard the \chandra X-ray
Observatory. The source is found at various intensity levels with spectral
variations present. X-ray luminosities vary between 2.0 \ergsec
and 3.5 \ergsec. Continuum variations are present at all times
and spectra can be well fit with a powerlaw component, a high kT blackbody
component, and a broad line component near oxygen. The spectra require
adjustments to the Ne K edge and in some occasions also to the Mg K edge. The
Ne K edge appears variable in terms of optical depths and morphology. The edge
reveals average blue- and red-shifted values implying Doppler velocities of the
order of 3500 \kms. The data show that Ne K exhibits excess column densities of
up to several 10 cm. The variability proves that the excess is
intrinsic to the source. The correponding disk velocities also imply an outer
disk radius of the order of cm consistent with an ultra-compact binary
nature. We also detect a prominent soft emission line complex near the \oviii
L position which appears extremely broad and relativistic effects from
near the innermost disk have to be included. Gravitationally broadened line
fits also provide nearly edge-on angles of inclination between 86 and
89. The emissions appear consistent with an ionized disk with
ionization parameters of the order of 10 at radii of a few 10 cm. The
line wavelengths with respect to \oviiia\ are found variably blue-shifted
indicating more complex inner disk dynamics.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the Astrophyscial Main Journa
On the metal-insulator transition in the two-chain model of correlated fermions
The doping-induced metal-insulator transition in two-chain systems of
correlated fermions is studied using a solvable limit of the t-J model and the
fact that various strong- and weak-coupling limits of the two-chain model are
in the same phase, i.e. have the same low-energy properties. It is shown that
the Luttinger-liquid parameter K_\rho takes the universal value unity as the
insulating state (half-filling) is approached, implying dominant d-type
superconducting fluctuations, independently of the interaction strength. The
crossover to insulating behavior of correlations as the transition is
approached is discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
Spatial homogeneity and doping dependence of quasiparticle tunneling spectra in cuprate superconductors
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) studies reveal long-range (similar to 100 nm) spatial homogeneity in optimally and underdoped superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) single crystals and thin films, and macroscopic spatial modulations in overdoped (Y0.7Ca0.3)BaCu3O7-delta (Ca-YBCO) epitaxial films. In contrast, STS on an optimally doped YBa2(Cu0.9934Zn0.0026Mg0.004)(3)O-6.9 single crystal exhibits strong spatial modulations and suppression of superconductivity over a microscopic scale near the Zn or Mg impurity sites, and the global pairing potential is also reduced relative to that of optimally doped YBCO, suggesting strong pair-breaking effects of the non-magnetic impurities. The spectral characteristics are consistent with d(x2-y2) pairing symmetry for the optimally and underdoped YBCO, and with (d(x2-y2) + s) for the overdoped Ca-YBCO. The doping-dependent pairing symmetry suggests interesting changes in the superconducting ground state, and is consistent with the presence of nodal quasiparticles for all doping levels. The maximum energy gap Delta (d) is non-monotonic with the doping level, while the (2 Delta (d)/k(B)T(c)) ratio increases with decreasing doping. The similarities and contrasts between the spectra of YBCO and of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x are discussed
Correlations in a two--chain Hubbard model
Equal time spin--spin and pair field correlation functions are calculated for
a two-chain Hubbard model using a density-matrix numerical renormalization
group approach. At half-filling, the antiferromagnetic and pair field
correlations both decay exponentially with the pair field having a much shorter
correlation length. This is consistent with a gapped spin-liquid ground state.
Below half--filling, the antiferromagnetic correlations become incommensurate
and the spin gap persists. The pair field correlations appear to follow a power
law decay which is similar to their non-interacting U=0 behavior.Comment: 9 pages and 5 postscript figures, RevTeX 3.0, UCI-CMTHE-94-01
