    Deep learning based surrogate modeling for thermal plume prediction of groundwater heat pumps

    The ability for groundwater heat pumps to meet space heating and cooling demands without relying on fossil fuels, has prompted their mass roll out in dense urban environments. In regions with high subsurface groundwater flow rates, the thermal plume generated from a heat pump's injection well can propagate downstream, affecting surrounding users and reducing their heat pump efficiency. To reduce the probability of interference, regulators often rely on simple analytical models or high fidelity groundwater simulations to determine the impact that a heat pump has on the subsurface aquifer and surrounding heat pumps. These are either too inaccurate or too computationally expensive for everyday use. In this work, a surrogate model was developed to provide a quick, high accuracy prediction tool of the thermal plume generated by a heat pump within heterogeneous subsurface aquifers. Three variations of a convolutional neural network were developed that accepts the known groundwater Darcy velocities as discrete two-dimensional inputs and predicts the temperature within the subsurface aquifer around the heat pump. A data set consisting of 800 numerical simulation samples, generated from random permeability fields and pressure boundary conditions, was used to provide pseudo-randomized Darcy velocity fields as input fields and the temperature field solution for training the network.     Thin crystalline macroporous silicon solar cells with ion implanted emitter

    We separate a (34 ± 2) Όm-thick macroporous Si layer from an n-type Si wafer by means of electrochemical etching. The porosity is p = (26.2 ± 2.4)%. We use ion implantation to selectively dope the outer surfaces of the macroporous Si layer. No masking of the surface is required. The pores are open during the implantation process. We fabricate a macroporous Si solar cell with an implanted boron emitter at the front side and an implanted phosphorus region at the rear side. The short-circuit current density is 34.8 mA cm-2 and the open-circuit voltage is 562 mV.     On‐site non‐destructive determination of the remanent magnetization of archaeological finds using field magnetometers

    The determination of the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) of archaeological features can be used for magnetic modelling, joining of shards, archaeomagnetic dating or the investigation of the firing–cooling–collapsing order of ancient buildings. The measurement of NRM is normally conducted on cylindrical or cubic samples in the laboratory. Nevertheless, archaeological finds should preferably not be destroyed, and laboratory instruments are high in costs. Therefore, we propose a lightweight and portable measurement set-up including already available field magnetometers (preferably caesium magnetometers) in which the archaeological sample of arbitrary shape, in our case a piece of daub, is mounted inside a gimbal to be rotated in all directions. The magnetic field of the sample is measured at a large number of rotational positions with the magnetometer kept at fixed position. In these measurements, the unknown direction of the NRM vector of the sample is rotated, whereas the average magnetic susceptibility of the sample and the ambient magnetic field are constant and known. Hence, the vector of NRM can be determined through least-squares inversion. For the inversion computation, the sample volume is discretized either as voxel model or approximated as an equivalent sphere. Under certain conditions depending on sample–sensor distance, dipole moment and radius of the sample, the approximation by a sphere is valid without effect on the accuracy of results.This is accurate enough, for example, to determine from daub pieces of burnt house remains whether the building was burnt and cooled before or after it collapsed

    For none, one, or two polarities—How do POLO junctions fit best into industrial Si solar cells?

    We present a systematic study on the benefit of the implementation of poly-Si on oxide (POLO) or related junctions into p-type industrial Si solar cells as compared with the benchmark of Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC). We assess three aspects: (a) the simulated efficiency potential of representative structures with POLO junctions for none (=PERC+), one, and for two polarities; (b) possible lean process flows for their fabrication; and (c) experimental results on major building blocks. Synergistic efficiency gain analysis reveals that the exclusive suppression of the contact recombination for one polarity by POLO only yields moderate efficiency improvements between 0.23%abs and 0.41%abs as compared with PERC+ because of the remaining recombination paths. This problem is solved in a structure that includes POLO junctions for both polarities (POLO2), for whose realization we propose a lean process flow, and for which we experimentally demonstrate the most important building blocks. However, two experimental challenges—alignment tolerances and screen-print metallization of p+ poly-Si—are unsolved so far and reduced the efficiency of the “real” POLO2 cell as compared with an idealized scenario. As an intermediate step, we therefore work on a POLO IBC cell with POLO junctions for one polarity. It avoids the abovementioned challenges of the POLO2 structure, can be realized within a lean process flow, and has an efficiency benefit of 1.59%abs as compared with PERC—because not only contact recombination is suppressed but also the entire phosphorus emitter is replaced by an n+ POLO junction

    The GEF Trio controls endothelial cell size and arterial remodeling downstream of Vegf signaling in both zebrafish and cell models

    Arterial networks enlarge in response to increase in tissue metabolism to facilitate flow and nutrient delivery. Typically, the transition of a growing artery with a small diameter into a large caliber artery with a sizeable diameter occurs upon the blood flow driven change in number and shape of endothelial cells lining the arterial lumen. Here, using zebrafish embryos and endothelial cell models, we describe an alternative, flow independent model, involving enlargement of arterial endothelial cells, which results in the formation of large diameter arteries. Endothelial enlargement requires the GEF1 domain of the guanine nucleotide exchange factor Trio and activation of Rho-GTPases Rac1 and RhoG in the cell periphery, inducing F-actin cytoskeleton remodeling, myosin based tension at junction regions and focal adhesions. Activation of Trio in developing arteries in vivo involves precise titration of the Vegf signaling strength in the arterial wall, which is controlled by the soluble Vegf receptor Flt1. Arterial flow regulates artery diameter but other mechanisms may also affect this. Here, the authors show that the guanine nucleotide exchange factor Trio and GTPases Rac1 and RhoG, triggers F-actin remodeling in arterial endothelial cells, independent of flow, to enhance lumen diameter in zebrafish and cell models.Peer reviewe

    Neuronal sFlt1 and Vegfaa determine venous sprouting and spinal cord vascularization

    Formation of organ-specific vasculatures requires cross-talk between developing tissue and specialized endothelial cells. Here we show how developing zebrafish spinal cord neurons coordinate vessel growth through balancing of neuron-derived Vegfaa, with neuronal sFlt1 restricting Vegfaa-Kdrl mediated angiogenesis at the neurovascular interface. Neuron-specific loss of flt1 or increased neuronal vegfaa expression promotes angiogenesis and peri-neural tube vascular network formation. Combining loss of neuronal flt1 with gain of vegfaa promotes sprout invasion into the neural tube. On loss of neuronal flt1, ectopic sprouts emanate from veins involving special angiogenic cell behaviours including nuclear positioning and a molecular signature distinct from primary arterial or secondary venous sprouting. Manipulation of arteriovenous identity or Notch signalling established that ectopic sprouting in flt1 mutants requires venous endothelium. Conceptually, our data suggest that spinal cord vascularization proceeds from veins involving two-tiered regulation of neuronal sFlt1 and Vegfaa via a novel sprouting mode

    Gap Junction Mediated Intercellular Metabolite Transfer in the Cochlea Is Compromised in Connexin30 Null Mice

    Connexin26 (Cx26) and connexin30 (Cx30) are two major protein subunits that co-assemble to form gap junctions (GJs) in the cochlea. Mutations in either one of them are the major cause of non-syndromic prelingual deafness in humans. Because the mechanisms of cochlear pathogenesis caused by Cx mutations are unclear, we investigated effects of Cx30 null mutation on GJ-mediated ionic and metabolic coupling in the cochlea of mice. A novel flattened cochlear preparation was used to directly assess intercellular coupling in the sensory epithelium of the cochlea. Double-electrode patch clamp recordings revealed that the absence of Cx30 did not significantly change GJ conductance among the cochlear supporting cells. The preserved electrical coupling is consistent with immunolabeling data showing extensive Cx26 GJs in the cochlea of the mutant mice. In contrast, dye diffusion assays showed that the rate and extent of intercellular transfer of multiple fluorescent dyes (including a non-metabolizable D-glucose analogue, 2-NBDG) among cochlear supporting cells were severely reduced in Cx30 null mice. Since the sensory epithelium in the cochlea is an avascular organ, GJ-facilitated intercellular transfer of nutrient and signaling molecules may play essential roles in cellular homeostasis. To test this possibility, NBDG was used as a tracer to study the contribution of GJs in transporting glucose into the cochlear sensory epithelium when delivered systemically. NBDG uptake in cochlear supporting cells was significantly reduced in Cx30 null mice. The decrease was also observed with GJ blockers or glucose competition, supporting the specificity of our tests. These data indicate that GJs facilitate efficient uptake of glucose in the supporting cells. This study provides the first direct experimental evidence showing that the transfer of metabolically-important molecules in cochlear supporting cells is dependent on the normal function of GJs, thereby suggesting a novel pathogenesis process in the cochlea for Cx-mutation-linked deafness

    Este artigo examina as relaçÔes entre o discurso da justiça e a prĂĄtica do ritual nos bandos do governo colonial portuguĂȘs em Timor Leste, entre a segunda metade do sĂ©culo XIX e as primeiras dĂ©cadas do sĂ©culo XX. Os bandos consistiam em ordens e instruçÔes de comando emanadas pelo governador portuguĂȘs em DĂ­li, e comunicadas de forma cerimonial por oficiais Ă s populaçÔes dos diversos reinos timorenses dispersos pelo paĂ­s. Bandos eram um instrumento por excelĂȘncia de governação colonial dos assuntos indĂ­genas, servindo para arbitrar conflitos, punir transgressĂ”es e, em geral, instituir realidades no mundo timorense. Contudo, esta instituição assumiu igualmente uma singular expressĂŁo nos usos timorenses, servindo bandos para comunicar tambĂ©m as ordens de autoridades tradicionais, os liurais.
