Quarkonium production and decays

Quarkonium decays are studied in the charmonium model. Relativistic corrections, higher-order perturbative QCD corrections and non- perturbative contributions are discussed. Recent measurements of charmonium annihilation rates are used to evaluate the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$ simultaneously with the wave functions (and their derivatives) at the origin. Further predictions are made for yet unobserved decay rates. The various models for quarkonium production in hadronic collisions are critically reviewed. Based on the charmonium model, the cross sections of different quarkonium states are given in a well-defined QCD perturbation series, including quark--antiquark, quark--gluon, and gluon--gluon scatterings. Numerical estimates are given for charmonium production in \p\p, \ppbar, and \pi\p collisions. The role of indirect \JP production via $\chi_{\c J}(1P)$, \eta_{\c}(2S), $\psi(2S)$ and \b-decays is pointed out. Relativistic effects and non-perturbative contributions are found to be important. Existing measurements are compiled and shown to be well explained if all contributions are included. The ${}^1S_0$ cross section is calculated in complete next-to-leading order. Experimental evidence for a vector-like behaviour of Pomeron exchange

Evidence is presented that the Pomeron act as a non-conserved vector current. A study has been made of the azimuthal angle phi, which is defined as the angle between the pT vectors of the two outgoing protons, in the reaction pp -> pp(X0) for those resonances (X0) which are compatible with being produced by double Pomeron exchange. These distributions have been compared with a model which describes the Pomeron as a non-conserved vector current and a qualitative agreement is found. In addition, when one of the particles exchanged is known to have spin 0, namely pi-Pomeron exchange, the phi distribution is flat.Comment: 13 pages, Latex, 4 Figure

Resonance production in central pp collisions at the CERN Omega Spectrometer

A study of resonance production in central pp collisions is presented as a function of several kinematical variables. In particular the difference in the transverse momentum (dPT) of the exchanged particles shows that undisputed qqbar mesons are suppressed at small dPT whereas glueball candidates are enhanced and in addition, the azimuthal angle phi gives information on the nature of the Pomeron.Comment: 14 pages, Latex, 5 Figure

Poverty in Pakistan: Increasing Incidence, Chronic Gender Preponderance, and the Plausibility of Grameen-type Intermediation

Pakistan is a large country with a population estimated at 130.580 million.1 The economy has a low-income of US$490 per capita, with an estimated Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) of US$ 2230.2 It has managed to achieve substantial economic growth in the past thirty years until the dawn of 1990s. The growth rate has averaged 6.8 percent, 4.8 percent and 6.5 percent in 1960s, 70s and 80s, respectively.3 Evidence from the National Income Accounts, Household Surveys and time series data on the real wages of unskilled workers shows that economic growth has contributed to reduce consumption poverty4 in Pakistan. The table placed as Appendix A at the end shows that GDP per capita has increased in real terms by about 63 percent between 1972-73 and 1990-91. Private consumption per capita also increased in real terms by about 36 percent. Despite the fact that the population has nearly doubled during the period, there have been gains in income and consumption in per capita terms.5 Further evidence of the decline in consumption poverty comes from various research studies in the past. These studies have generally used Household Integrated Economic Surveys (HIES) and estimated the incidence of poverty by using various definitions.

Vision, Grit, and Collaboration: How the Wisconsin Center for Nursing Achieved Both Sustainable Funding and Established Itself as a State Health Care Workforce Leader

In 2001, a dedicated group of nurses from across Wisconsin came together to discuss how to create a state center of expertise on key nursing workforce issues. The result was the establishment of the Wisconsin Center for Nursing (WCN) in 2005. Since that time, through its statewide Board of Directors, WCN has clarified and targeted specific state workforce needs and identified gaps that exist in addressing those needs. During its five-year existence, WCN has received funding from a variety of sources, and volunteers have spent hundreds of hours working on behalf of the organization. Finding a sustainable base of funding for WCN has been a priority in order to ensure that the organization can hire permanent staff and invest in ongoing initiatives. In 2009, WCN was involved in developing a strategy that resolved both the issue of sustainability and the need to collect and analyze data on the nursing profession. A bill was passed by the Wisconsin legislature that required RNs and LPNs to complete a comprehensive survey every two years when they renew their state licenses. In addition, the legislature raised the licensure fee for RNs and LPNs and dedicated a portion to WCN to assist in the analysis of the newly-collected nursing workforce data and to develop a state-wide plan addressing the future of the Wisconsin nursing workforce. This article will include the history of the WCN and the details of its journey toward sustainability including accomplishments and lessons learned
