How to Create an Innovation Accelerator
Too many policy failures are fundamentally failures of knowledge. This has
become particularly apparent during the recent financial and economic crisis,
which is questioning the validity of mainstream scholarly paradigms. We propose
to pursue a multi-disciplinary approach and to establish new institutional
settings which remove or reduce obstacles impeding efficient knowledge
creation. We provided suggestions on (i) how to modernize and improve the
academic publication system, and (ii) how to support scientific coordination,
communication, and co-creation in large-scale multi-disciplinary projects. Both
constitute important elements of what we envision to be a novel ICT

Perfil dos bolsistas de produtividade do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e Tecnológico (CNPq) na área de Medicina Veterinária
No presente estudo, submeteram-se dados da população de bolsistas de produtividade do Comitê de Medicina Veterinária do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e Tecnológico (CNPq) ao cálculo de Ãndices cientométricos, em um esforço para avaliar o perfil de pesquisadores de diferentes nÃveis perante vários parâmetros. Outras variáveis, como o local de formação, gênero, local de trabalho e formação de recursos humanos foram também anotados e avaliados. Há uma clara predominância do gênero masculino (72,37%), os quais se encontram em sua grande maioria radicados nas regiões Sul e Sudeste do paÃs. A maioria dos bolsistas concluiu seu doutorado no Brasil. Dentre os parâmetros de produção analisados, a formação de recursos humanos é alta em todos os nÃveis; dentre as variáveis cientométricas, os Ãndices de citações e o Ãndice h são decrescentes do nÃvel mais alto (PQ-1A) ao nÃvel 2; todavia, a variação intragrupos é muito alta para estes e outros derivado do Ãndice h. Uma modificação do Ãndice H, o Ãndice AWCR, em que o cálculo leva em conta a idade dos artigos publicados e citados, parece mais adequado à estratificação dos bolsistas. No âmbito geral, estudos deste tipo poderiam ser repetidos no médio prazo com vistas a aprimorar as fórmulas de ranqueamento de bolsistas
Assessment of Virally Vectored Autoimmunity as a Biocontrol Strategy for Cane Toads
BACKGROUND: The cane toad, Bufo (Chaunus) marinus, is one of the most notorious vertebrate pests introduced into Australia over the last 200 years and, so far, efforts to identify a naturally occurring B. marinus-specific pathogen for use as a biological control agent have been unsuccessful. We explored an alternative approach that entailed genetically modifying a pathogen with broad host specificity so that it no longer caused disease, but carried a gene to disrupt the cane toad life cycle in a species specific manner. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The adult beta globin gene was selected as the model gene for proof of concept of autoimmunity as a biocontrol method for cane toads. A previous report showed injection of bullfrog tadpoles with adult beta globin resulted in an alteration in the form of beta globin expressed in metamorphs as well as reduced survival. In B. marinus we established for the first time that the switch from tadpole to adult globin exists. The effect of injecting B. marinus tadpoles with purified recombinant adult globin protein was then assessed using behavioural (swim speed in tadpoles and jump length in metamorphs), developmental (time to metamorphosis, weight and length at various developmental stages, protein profile of adult globin) and genetic (adult globin mRNA levels) measures. However, we were unable to detect any differences between treated and control animals. Further, globin delivery using Bohle iridovirus, an Australian ranavirus isolate belonging to the Iridovirus family, did not reduce the survival of metamorphs or alter the form of beta globin expressed in metamorphs. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: While we were able to show for the first time that the switch from tadpole to adult globin does occur in B. marinus, we were not able to induce autoimmunity and disrupt metamorphosis. The short development time of B. marinus tadpoles may preclude this approach
Assessment of disease progression in dysferlinopathy: A 1-year cohort study
ObjectiveTo assess the ability of functional measures to detect disease progression in dysferlinopathy over 6 months and 1 year.MethodsOne hundred ninety-three patients with dysferlinopathy were recruited to the Jain Foundation's International Clinical Outcome Study for Dysferlinopathy. Baseline, 6-month, and 1-year assessments included adapted North Star Ambulatory Assessment (a-NSAA), Motor Function Measure (MFM-20), timed function tests, 6-minute walk test (6MWT), Brooke scale, Jebsen test, manual muscle testing, and hand-held dynamometry. Patients also completed the ACTIVLIM questionnaire. Change in each measure over 6 months and 1 year was calculated and compared between disease severity (ambulant [mild, moderate, or severe based on a-NSAA score] or nonambulant [unable to complete a 10-meter walk]) and clinical diagnosis.ResultsThe functional a-NSAA test was the most sensitive to deterioration for ambulant patients overall. The a-NSAA score was the most sensitive test in the mild and moderate groups, while the 6MWT was most sensitive in the severe group. The 10-meter walk test was the only test showing significant change across all ambulant severity groups. In nonambulant patients, the MFM domain 3, wrist flexion strength, and pinch grip were most sensitive. Progression rates did not differ by clinical diagnosis. Power calculations determined that 46 moderately affected patients are required to determine clinical effectiveness for a hypothetical 1-year clinical trial based on the a-NSAA as a clinical endpoint.ConclusionCertain functional outcome measures can detect changes over 6 months and 1 year in dysferlinopathy and potentially be useful in monitoring progression in clinical trials.ClinicalTrials.gov identifier:NCT01676077
Neutrophil serine proteases promote IL-1beta generation and injury in necrotizing crescentic glomerulonephritis
The pathogenesis of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated necrotizing crescentic GN (NCGN) is incompletely understood. Dipeptidyl peptidase I (DPPI) is a cysteine protease required for the activation of neutrophil serine proteases (NSPs) cathepsin G, neutrophil elastase, and proteinase 3, which are enzymes that modulate inflammation. We used a mouse model of anti-myeloperoxidase (MPO) antibody-induced NCGN to determine whether active NSPs contribute to its pathogenesis. MPO-deficient animals immunized with murine MPO, irradiated, and transplanted with wild-type bone marrow developed NCGN. In contrast, transplantation with bone marrow that lacked DPPI or lacked both neutrophil elastase and proteinase 3 protected mice from NCGN induced by anti-MPO antibody. The kidneys of mice reconstituted with DPPI-deficient bone marrow generated significantly less IL-1beta than did those of mice reconstituted with wild-type bone marrow; similarly, in vitro, DPPI-deficient monocytes produced significantly less IL-1beta in response to anti-MPO antibody than did wild-type monocytes. This reduction in IL-1beta was NSP dependent; exogenous addition of PR3 restored IL-beta production in DPPI-deficient monocytes. Last, the IL-1 receptor antagonist anakinra protected animals against anti-MPO antibody-induced NCGN (16.7%±6.0% versus 2.4%±1.7% crescents), suggesting that IL-1beta is a critical inflammatory mediator in this model. These data suggest that the development of anti-MPO antibody-induced NCGN requires NSP-dependent IL-1beta generation and that these processes may provide therapeutic targets for ANCA-mediated diseases in humans

Human Resource Diversity Management Practices in the Australian Manufacturing Sector.
We examined employee perceptions of the benefits and challenges of workforce diversity and human resource (HR) diversity management practices adopted in the Australian manufacturing sector. We found that overt discrimination does not exist in the Australian manufacturing sector. However, Australian employers appear to adopt a 'legalistic compliance approach' and have not considered workforce diversity as a source of competitive advantage. Employers have not adopted effective HR diversity management practices. The Australian manufacturing sector has failed to value diversity or capitalize on the benefits of workforce diversity. Inadequate recognition of overseas skills, ineffective communication, increased training costs and social isolation were perceived as the main challenges, whereas a stronger work ethic among multicultural employees, greater opportunities to learn from other cultures, lower absenteeism and less labor turnover were regarded as major benefits of workforce diversity.
