A Taxonomy of Self-configuring Service Discovery Systems
We analyze the fundamental concepts and issues in service
discovery. This analysis places service discovery in the context of distributed
systems by describing service discovery as a third generation
naming system. We also describe the essential architectures and the
functionalities in service discovery. We then proceed to show how service
discovery fits into a system, by characterizing operational aspects.
Subsequently, we describe how existing state of the art performs service
discovery, in relation to the operational aspects and functionalities, and
identify areas for improvement
On consistency maintenance in service discovery
Communication and node failures degrade the ability of a service discovery protocol to ensure Users receive the correct service information when the service changes. We propose that service discovery protocols employ a set of recovery techniques to recover from failures and regain consistency. We use simulations to show that the type of recovery technique a protocol uses significantly impacts the performance. We benchmark the performance of our own service discovery protocol, FRODO against the performance of first generation service discovery protocols, Jini and UPnP during increasing communication and node failures. The results show that FRODO has the best overall consistency maintenance performance
The Performance of a Second Generation Service Discovery Protocol In Response to Message Loss
We analyze the behavior of FRODO, a second generation service discovery protocol, in response to message loss in the network. Earlier protocols, like UPnP and Jini rely on underlying network layers to enhance their failure recovery. A comparison with UPnP and Jini shows that FRODO performs more efficiently in maintaining consistency, with shorter latency, not relying on lower network layers for robustness and therefore functions correctly on a simple lightweight protocol stack

Connecting your Mobile Shopping Cart to the Internet-of-Things
International audienceOnline shopping has reached an unforeseen success during the last decade thanks to the explosion of the Internet and the development of dedicated websites. Nonetheless, the wide diversity of e-commerce websites does not really foster the sales, but rather leaves the customer in the middle of dense jungle. In particular, finding the best offer for a specific product might require to spend hours browsing the Internet without being sure of finding the best deal in the end. While some websites are providing comparators to help the customer in finding the best offer meeting her/his requirements, the objectivity of these websites remains questionable, the comparison criteria are statically defined, while the nature of products they support is restricted to specific categories (e.g., electronic devices). In this paper, we introduce MACCHIATO as a user-centered platform leveraging online shopping. MACCHIATO implements the principles of the Internet-of-Things by adopting the REST architectural style and semantic web standards to navigate product databases exposed on the Internet. By doing so, customers keep the control of their shopping process by selecting the stores and comparing the offers according to their own preferences
Low-energy Compton scattering on the nucleon and sum rules
The Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn and Baldin-Lapidus sum rules are evaluated in the
dressed K-matrix model for photon-induced reactions on the nucleon. For the
first time the sum of the electric and magnetic polarisabilities
and the forward spin polarisability are explicitly calculated in two
alternative ways -- from the sum rules and from the low-energy expansion of the

Implementing the integrated water resources management approach in a volcanic river basin: a case study of Opak Sub-Basin, Indonesia
The ways in which integrated water resources management (IWRM) is implemented in a volcanic river basin (the Opak Sub-Basin) on the flanks of Mt Merapi volcano in Indonesia is examined. Data deriving from semi-ethnographic fieldwork and in-depth interviews are analysed through a multilevel governance lens that considers three pillars of managementāconservation, utilization and hazard controlāand three levels of governanceānational, regional and municipal. The research shows that the regional level is the priority playing field; that the degree of integration differs between levels of government; and that actors called āwhisperersā support higher integration levels, have the greatest ability to form bridges between communities and government
